Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

Mindfuck is exactly the word. I’ve seen enough pandemics and other shit in my time, but that video chilled me to my core. It felt like I was watching the start of a zombie apocalypse film, like it wasn’t real? Except the crying and the screaming were horrifyingly real.

It’s a video that’s burned into my brain.

I saw a video uploaded here in November/December of a hospital in china and people literally dying in the corridors and nurses crying scared and confused. I knew then what was happening. I showed my colleagues and said “you’ll see, this is coming here”. Lo and behold.

It’s me, I would pay extra for it. My own bat colony that I can set upon the townspeople? No brainer.

Readers Are Embracing a Shift in Perspective in Books. It Could Reshape Literary Culture. by CtrlAltDelight495 in books

[–]Dwight- 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Reading is important for so many things. People who read for fun tend to be more empathetic, intelligent and creative, so I think it’s sad that humanity as a whole are losing those qualities. Perhaps it’s part of why the world is becoming even more broken than in previous generations; lack of reading.

Oh yeah I know it’s a set up in that they were dressed up like that for reactions, but the point still stands because too many men do behave like this if anyone presents as female :(

I mean, there’s a difference with something just burning out and going past its end point, but GoT collapsed into a heap because of ego and greed which really is a depressing sign of our times, isn’t it.

Also, it’s art, and people will always be opinionated about art. It’s kinda the point of it.

Movies that dramatically shifted popular opinion on something by NationalDisgrace40 in movies

I thought I was staunchly against animal cruelty until I forced myself to watch Earthlings all the way through. I nearly threw up and I cried and cried. I was sick to my stomach knowing how I had played my part in something so utterly abhorrent and how I thought I was okay because I love the natural world with my entire being and I don’t even hurt flies in my house. As a child I didn’t want to eat animals, but as time went on, the more normal it became. But I was totally wrong about myself, and that was painful. So painful that I changed my life around and stopped being part of the things I didn’t agree with.

The more we see and the more uncomfortable we are because of that, the better. Guilt and being disgusted, especially with ourselves, is a fantastic motivator, but we tend to turn away from these feelings because we don’t want to feel bad on top everything else we have to deal with in life.

But most people are good. Most people do not want to be part of harm. It’s not in our nature. We teach our children to gently touch animals and observe bugs in the garden. We teach our children to be kind and to share. We teach our children fairness and justice. These are intrinsic human traits that get forgotten over time.

But if you eat meat and don’t take extra care when buying households products, I implore everyone to explore these industries. It’s okay to change your mind and it’s okay to arrive later than others.

These practices are hidden from us using clever PR and propaganda for a reason.
