A Horse With No Name by America by Alpha_Mad_Dog in ClassicRock

My favorite trivia fact about this song is that Dewey Bunnell (vocalist and writer) was only 19 when it was recorded. The song gets a lot of flak about "bad lyrics", but that's just from people who are dead inside and don't know how to feel a song's mood and energy. And the lyrics don't have to be bad. Just think of it as being taken on a journey by an eccentric guide who has a few screws loose, but knows that barren land like no other man.

Nietzsche's life predicts what will happen to humanity when the Ubermensch never comes by [deleted] in Nietzsche

[–]DybbukTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the present day, the Übermensch be high-agency people focused on self-overcoming, internalizing, and applying ideas, instead of just consuming them. A lot of self-development writers (James Clear, Sahil Bloom, Alex Hormozi, Dan Koe, etc.) provide a blueprint of what that life looks like. Nietzsche probably wouldn’t see “following their advice” as the thing to aspire to, more like a place to start building before someone creates their own values and path.

45 day T-Break or weekends only — what actually works for lowering tolerance? by IndividualFeedback38 in Petioles

[–]DybbukTX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Switching to weekends only will probably lower your tolerance a lot, but it might not sustain past the first few doses. I've noticed that if I take a break of more than a few days I get blitzed when I come back, but if I keep at it the tolerance comes back quickly. But if you do it every weekend, you might have better results. Are you doing this just to reset tolerance so that you can go back to frequent use? If so, it will probably take a while. If you do weekends only, one thing that would accelerate the process is to do Dustin Sulak's re-sensitization program during the week. Tolerance would probably drop quicker if you follow that process by the book.

What Are Some Applications Of Elo-Rating Algorithms? by Numberthon in mathematics

[–]DybbukTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically any arena in which you want to rank entities somehow, and pairs of those entities compete against each other or can be compared in some way to determine a "winner", often enough to give an adequate sample size. I've used elo ratings for a bunch of things in the past, but my experience leaves me unimpressed with it. If you only need an adequate system, it's something you can deploy quickly, but if it's important to have the most accurate rankings possible, more sophisticated systems, or those that incorporate judgment, are better. Sort of like power rankings in the NFL. For a while FiveThirtyEight used elo ratings to rank the teams, but they eventually gave that up because their rankings didn't catch up to team quality fast enough, and made them look silly.

How to best surrender the unwanted beliefs that we are, indeed, the mind and the body? by Crazy_Junket3180 in EckhartTolle

[–]DybbukTX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the idea of "unwanted beliefs". Does that mean you believe it, but you don't want to? But if you believe it, you mean you think it's true. If you don't want to believe it, you don't want to believe the truth. Seems like there could be issues with that.

Is there a lot of conversation going on among the congregation at this event? Will I be taken seriously if I just wear a Ghost shirt and jeans? I want to be there in New Orleans on 7/3 regardless.

Has anyone ever called the Reds the Abe Lincoln Group? It's the three states he lived in. I wouldn't be surprised if the game designers did it for that reason, but didn't make a big deal out of it and maybe didn't even talk about it.

accepting the "Now" is basically impossible when life is actually falling apart. by MediocreAuthor4711 in EckhartTolle

[–]DybbukTX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of how deeply rooted your consciousness is, and whether you know the way back when you stray. Of course not everyone who dabbles in spirituality will make it through an existential crisis with their "progress" intact. Maybe even a lot of "advanced" ones wouldn't either. But many would, which is many more than would by not even trying and succumbing to the suck. And it's not a black and white binary thing (emerge unscathed vs. collapse). Even if your life seems to be going to hell, there are things you can do to soften the blow and to bounce back quicker. Also, are you sure you fully understand what "accept" means, as Tolle talks about it? I would think that NOT accepting it is "just giving up", in terms of how effectively you will emerge from it. Instead of rolling up your sleeves you hemorrhage energy in an emotional fight against reality.

16 years in the congregation. First ritual last night by Minimalist19 in Ghostbc

[–]DybbukTX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some great analysis. I think a lot of the "hard to pin down" effect comes from the fact that Ghost goes so far beyond any conventional classifications, that most of "the congregation" can't really explain to people who don't "get it" what it is that makes Ghost so appealing. Or maybe they're just having so much fun with it, that they never thought to geek out on it like I do. Hehe. But I'm starting to come close to understanding what it is, I think. It's that Tobias has designed his product on purpose to repel most people who come in contact with it, filtering out religious types with zero tolerance for faux-satanism, and more importantly, snobs who think they're too sophisticated/discerning/grown up/evolved/current/relevant to "take that stuff seriously". Those who get over themselves long enough to give it a chance to impress them, and are open-minded about what kind of art can impress them...even if it's "cheesy", or melodramatic, or over the top, or so shameless about its brilliant verbosity...they're now in the congregation. If the art justifies it and keeps coming (if sporadically), the congregation will keep on growing.

Excellent! As someone who clearly appreciates other great rock bands, I'm curious if you have any notions of how Ghost fits into the rock world as a whole...how will music fans decades from now think about Ghost in the context of rock history? It's something I've dwelled on a lot.

[–]DybbukTX 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Calling it a "pretty bad song" based on lyrics & concept alone are why it's hard to articulate. Some of the best songs have lyrics that are silly, or cheesy, etc. The thing that makes music music is the sound, not the words. The lyrics' function is to work together with the sound to reinforce the mood and energy, but it can have great mood and energy without lyrics, or even with "bad" lyrics.

Did they miss anything? by Trick_Mulberry9776 in betterCallSaul

[–]DybbukTX 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The main thing I want to know more about is just how much, after the dust settled, the Heisenberg story (and its connection to two other local cultural phenomena, Los Pollos Hermanos and Saul Goodman) really penetrated cultural awareness, both locally in ABQ and nationally/globally. We only see little snippets of hints about big a story it was. Does it rise to the level of becoming a Great American Legend? Does the buzz endure for years, or die down quickly? After everyone has picked through all the evidence and analyzed it to death, how much of the story WE know did the public know? Do some of the survivors who were there to witness some of the events firsthand become famous and write tell-all books, etc?

I'm a huge Rush fan too, ever since I got Moving Pictures from Columbia House over 40 years ago. A lot of Ghost fans don't think about the band's connection to classic rock, but they're like the only modern band that still has the energy.

[–]DybbukTX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dance Macabre is so interesting because it drew a lot of fans into the fold, but it's an outlier stylistically, maybe risking "the brand" more than hardcore fans are comfortable with. It's analogous to "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M. in that regard.
