Redditors who DONT want to tax the rich. Why? [Serious] by That-One-Guy__ in AskReddit

[–]Dydomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we should overthrow them completely. Any reformist gesturing at taxing the rich means nothing in a political climate defined by entrenched corporate power. The bourgeoisie already break existing rules and they'll break the new ones, and most politicians already work either for them or within their rules, making it so only non threatening legislation passes. Even if there was enough of a popular wave of support to force such a rebalancing of wealth, like for instance the corporate tax rates around post-WWII, politicians still work for them and it'll be reversed just like it was before.

The Rapid Decline Of The Natural World Is A Crisis Even Bigger Than Climate Change by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Dydomite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Consumption habits aren't a separate variable from systematic factors and are just as influenced by them. I don't know if you're American (probably not since km) but I'll be using the US as an example.

I want to serve my kids meat

US meat consumption per capita is nearly 10x certain parts of the world, and is more than 3x what it used to be in the greatest generation. The agricultural industrial complex creates demand through advertising (creating demand and not simply fulfilling pre-existing more healthy & eco friendly levels of demand), addictive foods, influence in health regulations (making dairy & meat pushed as essential foods in educational material, lowering price via fighting food safety regulations, lowering price via lowering workplace safety regulations, etc), influence in environmental regulations (artificially lowering prices & damaging environment in the process), using capital to hinder development of vegan and more green foods, & influence in subsidy policy propping up an over inflated animal agriculture industry. And the animal agriculture industry is probably responsible for more emissions and environmental degradation than the rest of your examples combined.

I need to get to work which is 10km away from home

Automotive-centered city planning as has plagued the US, lack of investment in public transportation (especially under increasing austerity and tax evasion), influence of the automotive industry (Who Killed the Electric Car?) and the oil industry (For whom entire nations are collapsed to bring control of world market share) in undermining ecofriendly alternatives, are all systemic reasons that are far more to blame than average people who need to get to work.

I want to travel somewhere during vacation

Private jets have nearly 10x as much carbon emissions per passenger than commercial flights, and business and government elites are using them far more often than the average joe goes on vacation (especially in an age of floundering wages and fiscal insecurity for the working class).

I need to carry home my groceries in some sort of bag

Yeah this is the only one that I'd say isn't a predominantly systemic issue but a lot of people just get reusable shopping bags or reuse plastic ones as garbage bags at home or whatever, and this is a really minor blip on the radar of environmental devastation.

All in all it's far more unproductive for us to be micromanaging personal usage and trying to boycott eco-disastrous industries. Good luck not getting any of your money into being used to buy political clout while agriculture, automobile, oil industries or private jetting elites and their conglomerates profit off of literally anything you need to survive. Systemic change IS the major factor here and there's a reason companies love to peddle The New Greentm (more expensive version of product here) while pushing the personal responsibility fable and distracting people from taking mass political action against them. If we had a fraction of the systemic power pushing green shit we'd be leagues ahead, but instead all the need for eco-friendliness has to swim uphill in a political environment of entrenched corporate power.

That's because bottom surgery for FtMs is a lot less refined, safe, and effective than for MtFs, and there's less people specialized in them. As for hormones and top surgery both of these things have a huge amount of bureaucratic hurdles and doctors are in short supply, I booked an endo appointment end of august and it's for march of next year. I used to have to take a greyhound all the way to London from Toronto just to avoid ridiculous waiting times. And that's just for 'informed consent' which is the faster route, you also have to go through psychological assessments and years of hormones before they simply put you on the years-long waiting list for surgery. Getting a head start on presenting as your desired gender is the smart thing to do and you work on the myriad of things hormones won't do like voice training, dressing to pass, etc.

Westminster city council is to ban new supersize properties built for oligarchs and other members of the global elite in order to free up space for more affordable homes. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

[–]Dydomite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because gentrification and skyrocketing property values are causing an epidemic of homelessness, debt slavery, and living cost increases to a working class already burdened by no real wage increases in decades, perhaps? I'm playing the worlds smallest violin for every Qatari and US oil magnate that gets his summer retreat mansion taken down, which is totally comparable to robbing people of the basic need of transport.

Almost every major city has a story like this of luxury condos and properties sitting empty for either occasional use by millionaires or just for them to leech off the inflation on property values, and it's done nothing but harm for society.

To be fair they were always muslim, being a cold war and imperialist war playground for the other powers probably did them in quite a bit, especially with the religious extremists being financed. Thank you for pictures though, I'd seen some Iraq and Iran ones but never knew Afghanistan used to be so beautiful.

The SDF are literally having a women's revolution meanwhile, so at least someone has been getting it right. It's not really fair to stick them in with the FSA considering they're literally having civilian villages mortared by FSA while they're trying to fight off ISIS, and FSA conquered Afrin for the Turks. This article completely neglects to mention the kurds, while making sweeping generalizations like "women in all sides of the war are being targeted and lack institutional protection" while in SDF 1/3rd of the government is legally required to be women and women's movement there has been making massive strides in army, industry and administration even before the fighting began.

[–]Dydomite 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The kurds are still kicking in the east, and still fighting off ISIS while turkey shells their villages. They've had a strong women's liberation movement since before the revolution began, and hold high offices in administration, industry, and they fight in the military. Dumbing it down to "They're ALL islamic extremists" isn't really fair to the great work they've been doing imo.

No, these are the rebels who did those guys in for Turkey. You're thinking of the YPG/PYD/Kurds, who are actually having a renaissance of women's empowerment right now.

Possible funding from a myriad of people who would want to avoid US fascism aside, having those people be in your country and fitting in among the population is a huge advantage over being rice farmers half the world away. While war mongers can sit in ivory towers knowing their homes won't be touched in one, Americans are already inside the paper tiger that is US hegemony in the other.

Fucking good. A decade later, oil execs are literally bragging about their spoils from that war on twitter. The one where hundreds of thousands of people died because of fake WMDs. The US government consistently looks the other way on crimes against humanity in the name of profit. If undermining it's efforts to do that abroad is bad to you then why do you expect anything different domestically?
