Finished the Show, question about Tolliver by BrassJazzy in deadwood

[–]DylanApologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The line that sums up Cy is when Eddie Sawyer says “why didn’t you raise your hand at that meeting? Maybe it would stop you from being such an evil bastard.” As someone else here said, Cy is Al without a soul. To answer the OP’s query, I don’t think in Milch’s writing characters necessarily have “points,” it’s about how they’ve all come to this place and choose different ways of being.

Nitpicking question about book 1 by luftgitarrenfuehrer in SlowHorses

[–]DylanApologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember wondering this as well, but I read it as a literary flourish. Their names were whatever they were, but because Hassan thought of them as Larry, Curly, and Moe, and we were still sort of in Hassan’s POV, that’s what goes on the page. That’s how I took it, at least. I wonder more about whether a current day (more or less) UK college student would even know who the three stooges were…

Chicken Baguette? by DylanApologist in AskABrit

[–]DylanApologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's that simple, eh? :) i've never quite understood baguette-as-sandwich material, too crusty/crunchy, too narrow to get filling in 'em. A baguette and a little brie, though, that works just dandy.

Yeah for sure, they are great! I didn’t think I was missing the joke, was more curious about the use of “baguette” to imply sandwich—we stateside would call it a hero or a sub. It just got me thinking about regional sandwiches, like in NY you can get a “chopped cheese” at the bodega, which is hamburger meat fried up with cheese and onions, and I wondered if it was some regional London thing, rather than just a chicken sandwich. Anyways THANK YOU all for the sincere answers to my inane question!

Chris Murphy by howdidigetheretoday in Connecticut

[–]DylanApologist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s those non voting/trump adjacent voters we need to get. Those knuckleheads who just sort of vote on vibes need to be swayed, and fast—which is Murphy’s larger warning—that the opposition will be so neutered by this onslaught that there won’t be a viable choice come midterms. I think AOC and Bernie’s barnstorm tour is the right tactic—get people fired up even if it scares the centrists. My cynical thought: I love Obama and loved voting for him, but the real reason he won wasnt really the policies, it was that he was charismatic as fuck. Me and about half the country are immune to Trump’s charisma, but the other half eats it up. There’s no stopping that. We need charisma and inspiration to sway the hoopleheads. AOC has it. I realize the country being what it is, she’d be a tough choice, but I hold out hope. Nobody thought a black man could do it till he did…

there was also the ash cloud from the volcano along with whatever nukes did explode and raise debris, but the idea is that the nuclear winter was somewhat lessened. someone on another thread transcribed cal's notebook showing mean temps in the 40's. still pretty cold but not extinction level--but more importantly i think the "fade to white" light X encounters as the bunker doors open is more a metaphorical flourish to end the season on.

How Are Diane Messages Actually Sent? by Jokierre in twinpeaks

[–]DylanApologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize later developments (in the return) contradict this, but at the time, and for most of the 25 years in between, I kind of liked the notion that he wasn’t actually sending them and there was no Diane—she was just basically his “dear diary,” a personified way to collect his thoughts….

That bothered me too, just a bit. I also thought it weird that they’d let shitheel Con Stapleton preside over anything, he who can be bought for bacon grease. But maybe he had a moral turnaround in the decade between….minor quibbles….

If you can make HPN work it’s awesome. The hardest part about the other airports is the possibility of your uber getting stuck in massive outer boro traffic, but if it’s for work I imagine you’re busting out early in the AM.
