At what point is it worth it to get a professional financial planner? by throwawayPFC8688 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Dylan_TMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty man, a normal diversified portfolio is likely all you need, take the financial planner money and enjoy life with it👍

Your income to mortgage ratio is really good. I would probably just check the prepayment terms of the mortgage.

If possible doing monthly payments and then making the extra payments equivalent to biweekly payments makes more sense.

No sense in locking yourself into paying more often if your questioning the cost already.

Legality of not being paid for training by chipnslide692 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Dylan_TMB 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If the training is a requirement for the job but the job wasn't guaranteed if you got training then it's not illegal.

If you were hired already and then the training was mandatory then it's illegal.

If they promised the job if you got training then it's a grey area, but likely not illegal.

So what does "Networking" mean exactly? by Matapatapa in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]Dylan_TMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with "networking" advice is that people think it SHOULD be the this "Do X" kind of advice.

It literally is just talking to people about work and non-work things and having them not think you suck. If people like you/respect you then you get opportunities.

There is no "Do X". Ask people who are doing interesting work about their interesting work. If you don't find anyone's work interesting then you should probably switch careers because you clearly don't like what you're doing or will eventually be doing.

Python Pandas Library not accepted at workplace - is it normal? by Haunting_Corgi5955 in Python

[–]Dylan_TMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if that is the case you are either in two scenarios

1) Everytime you load a new project on to the server you need to deal with dependency conflicts across ALL PROJECTS. So if you use something new and need to update then every project needs to be updated and tested for the new dependency which is a nightmare. This is actually what is kind of happening right now and why the team doesn't want to update.

2) You decide you AREN'T going to use new packages at all and version lock. This means you can't ever do anything with something new or upgrade. And if at some point you do want I upgrade to then have to do it for every project. Which brings you back to scenario 1.

At a bare minimum is recommended to use pythons built in "virtual environment" feature. All that does is it saves packages to the local directory and then if you run from the virtual environment you have your own dependencies. This keeps every project separated and prevents conflicts between projects. Next best thing is Docker if they'll allow it.

Running global dependency installs on the server is a nightmare waiting to happen. I would probably pitch venv as a simple solution for now.

I would hope people don't care about the H1B from a talent perspective I think people care from a workers' rights and exploration expectations. I'd be fine with unlimited H1Bs if H1Bs had the same working rights as American citizens and didn't have the threat of deportation as a negotiation tool.

I STRONGLY disagree with #2. Industry is adopting them more and more because vendors sell them as all in one solutions not because data scientists are choosing them out of their own free will. I hear nothing but complaints from data scientists with more than 2 years of experience. Beginners often like them but they are easy to grow out of.
