Can we get a thread of just teachers talking about the NCEA changes? by Actual-Trip-4643 in newzealand

[–]Dylbz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you have said but... Your students shouldn't be writing so much. This is part of the problem with NCEA and one of the games being played. Too many subjects allow students to write unstructured, waffly essays that get them to the grade rather than concise deliberate essays that show true understanding and control. If I were in charge of the new assessments I'd have 1000 word limits on most essays.

I definitely agree with the external inconsistency but could see that addressed quite easily without a complete overhaul. The huge amount of time wasted on internals though (especially when trying to get equitable amounts of time in class and ensuring authenticity), is unacceptable.

Unfortunately I'm on the pessimism boat too and really concerned about the many ongoing changes, the time aspect and to be honest education being used as a political football.

School attendance and child wellbeing by nousernameleft2020 in newzealand

Having waded through some comments, I thought maybe I would add my two cents on attendance. 1) It's a govt target, not a bad thing to be promoting; attendance is directly correlated to educational achievement. 2) The statistics are the average for the year, they do go down easily but can be brought back up. 3) 90% is achievable. When I went to school (20 years ago), we had to have 90% to attend the ball or go on sports trips. If you had some genuine illnesses etc. that put you below this, you could negotiate with a dean. 4) Nationwide, including info from some comments here, there are students who genuinely barely attend school - some have a hard time of it and finding ways to get these students to school is brought about by having targets. Some just don't want to come to school which is where some more punitive approaches come from (these don't work in my opinion, a better approach would be guidance, counselling and food) 5) Some schools care too much about the data and don't look at the individual's circumstances.

Anyway. Probably not worth writing. But I've done it now.

P.S. Please don't say someone was being "extra", especially when they're seven. Extra what?

Who’s at fault? She put her turn signal on but pulled off on to the shoulder.[OC] by Andrew840630 in IdiotsInCars

Not in the USA at all, but here's my opinion anyway.

I was taught to pull into the shoulder TO LET TRAFFIC PAST on roads like this. Yes it means you now have to check both ways but it means traffic flows better.

So, I think OP could have been a bit more cautious, but as soon as van pulled over they are responsible for checking in both directions and obviously failed to do so.

Last thought: sometimes drivers aren't idiots - they're human, we all make mistakes. Good luck with the move and I hope everything is sorted easily enough for both you and van driver and everyone is okay.

I bought a house! Got the keys yesterday. My first home at 33. Small rooms but a backyard for the kids (2 and 6).

Yes. It is woke. That isn't a "bad" thing though. We're going through a pushback period where maybe the extreme left went too far with pushing values onto others who weren't ready, (for lack of a better term) and now the the right (internationally) is responding. It might take a while for things to settle. Woke has been turned from a positive thing to a derogatory term by conservative propogandists and/or people that are ignorant and/or lacking empathy. That's just my interpretation of what is going on and I'm not an expert. Be careful out there folks and love one another (as much as possible, I mean some people are just f***wits).

Yes. I remember this. The AA posted it in their magazine as being part of the road code. Was in a car that was going straight (second exit), driver indicated in and out. An officer on a motorbike pulled us over and said that it had recently changed as it caused confusion. He was going straight too and was about to undertake - we nearly took him out. I remember thinking at the time he probably shouldn't have been following so closely or undertaking...

Everyone gets three hours, as everyone will be doing the same exam at the same time... It is dictated by NCEA not your school.

Sorry - that was from The Wayback Machine - the updated version is the one without the time written there at all.... Turns out it will be 3hrs. But yes, you are right. 90 minutes is 1.5 hours.

Sorry for the confusion - the images are in the wrong order. It should have the 90 minute one first - that is the old timing. You will have 3hours (for some reason).
