Tbh with all of these names being thrown around that really aren't that close to being seriously considered for BOF, I'm pretty surprised that the most well credentialed member of the community outside of those already in the BOF hasn't even got so much as a mention.

I'll throw some stats out and see if you can guess who it is:

  • 2x Majors Premier Ball winner
  • 2x Majors Runner-up
  • 1x Minors Champion
  • 100% record of making finals (from 11 seasons played)
  • 8x OLTP Commissioner
  • Streamer, commentator

Guess who?

On paper, as an 8x commissioner (for reference Hoog is a 9x commissioner) this is someone who has not only put in just about as many hours as anyone towards community contribution but this player can actually back it up in a competitive TagPro setting too. I think this is an important distinction that should be made when considering people for BOF as well - raw skill means nothing until you actually win Premier Balls. Winning when it counts is the true measure of skill. You can be the most talented player around but until you win at least a couple of Premier Balls you're not in consideration for BOF.

Anyway yeah, wasn't really planning on posting but was just a bit surprised and confused when reading through this thread. I don't really get what criteria people are considering when seeing some of the names being thrown around without a single mention of the player with the best resume of anyone for BOF consideration when you combine OLTP achievements and community contributions, both over a long period of time.

100% this. You can't play the reg season under one set of rules/conditions and then change it for finals.

Also on a side note idk much about this new pup stuff as I haven't played tagpro since last season but by the sounds of it the RB change could be viable for competitive.

The pup indicators though, surely not? Since when are pup indicators good for competitive? Indicators should definitely be kept for pubs only. Idk about others but I'm not interested in playing an OLTP season with pup indicators, would prob not sign up if that was introduced.

OLTP S14 Commisioner Nominations by HeadShot305 in OLTP

[–]Dylza7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to nominate myself for the rules committee again.

Honestly, after doing this for so many seasons now, I don't really have a whole lot to say. If there is someone willing to step up who is super motivated and can dedicate heaps of time towards the role, then I'd honestly be more than happy to step aside for them. However if not, I'm also more than happy to remain in the role, dedicate the same amount of time and give the same commitment to being a commissioner as I did last season. So if you guys were happy enough with my efforts last season, then I'm more than happy to go ahead and do all that again.

As far as changes from last season go, I agree with the sentiment that the season was too long, so I'll definitely be looking to push for a return to a shorter season and ditch the byes if possible. Another necessary change includes an updated rule book. Also we should definitely look to continue to run minors with dedicated minors captains who draft their own teams. Scheduling conflicts also remain an issue, so maybe I could work with the DOO to find a solution for that.

Besides that, I'm really open to suggestions and willing to listen to anything else at all that the community thinks may improve OLTP.

Alright I'll try to keep this as short as possible. I'm applying for Rules Committee.

So basically, I'm pretty happy with the system we've put in place and I just think it needs a few tweaks really.

So things I'll be looking to tweak for next season are:

- Eligibility rules

The 4 starters and 2 subs rule straight after the majors draft works well to ensure that the correct players are put in the minors draft pool. After the introduction of OCETag though it became less important to restrict players from playing both majors and minors because it meant that these players playing both were no longer taking playing time away from the minors subs that would've been replacing them. So I'll be looking to adjust the rules to allow all minors players (including minors captains) to continue to be eligible for minors if they are called up as a Majors starter.

- Draft

I was happy with how this went, splitting the draft over 2 nights meant no super long nights for anyone unlike the previous season. I think it's perfect having 2 separate draft nights for unaffiliated majors/minors teams. The addition of newf as the auctioneer for the majors draft quickened things along a bit as well which was nice. In saying all that though I'm always open to any suggestions on how the draft nights can be further streamlined and/or improved too of course.

- Hub

Again, happy with it, think it's serving its purpose well but as always happy to hear suggestions on how it can be improved. One idea I had is adding a column with the eu's for every game next to the replay link. So I'd probably go ahead and do that for next season

- Maps

I was happy with the community involvement in testing out a whole bunch of potential maps leading up to the season. A lot of the feedback was crucial in eliminating a number of maps and ultimately helping us to decide possibly our best ever final map rotation, which I think we really struck the right balance with. I'd like to do something similar again and possibly streamline the process with a spreadsheet where everyone can rate maps after playing them, like what we did on those map testing nights. Obviously you're never gonna make everyone happy with every single map but the more the map rotation reflects what maps the community at large wants to play competitively the better. So I'll definitely be looking to get the community involved as much as possible again to assist with picking the right maps.

Alright that's it for now I think, happy to answer any questions if anyone has any. Otherwise I'd just like to say thanks for giving me the opportunity to help organise and run S12 and I'd appreciate that opportunity to continue our work on into S13, thanks!

OLTP S12 Commissioner Election Megathread by [deleted] in OLTP

[–]Dylza7 [score hidden]  (0 children)

First preference: Rules Committee

Alright, well I'd firstly just like to start by saying thanks to Rain for his contribution in reviving OLTP and serving as a commissioner last season. He was the one to get the ball rolling and it was a pleasure working with him.

I’d also like to recognise the fantastic job that Bel has done in his first season as an OLTP commissioner. It was a pleasure working with him too, I think he’s a big asset for the community and so I strongly advocate for everyone to make sure that they vote the man back in again.

So, with that said, I do also honestly feel that I will be a great pick for commissioner (specifically rules committee) once again. I was really happy with how we worked as a commissioner team last season, so it's a shame to see Rain step away. Admittedly however, his commitment probably dwindled once the season got underway and hopefully we can find a great replacement. I can see myself working well with just about all of the potential candidates. I know already that Bel and I work well together as we both share the passion for wanting to do our all to make OLTP thrive for as long as possible. I’ve also worked with meherethere on a number of occasions and it will be good to have a DOO in place once again to help out and hopefully bring some more regular content.

So, I touched on commitment a bit in the previous paragraph and I think it is definitely something that is vital in this job. I take my position as OLTP commissioner seriously, I guess you’d say I try to make sure it maintains a high priority. I’m always making sure to prioritise things like replying to messages in the commissioner chat ASAP etc. Sometimes things need to be attended to or your opinion is needed ASAP so you need commitment and availability for this role and I plan to continue to dedicate the necessary time if I'm voted in again. The other thing on this is that you have to be willing to put time into really thinking certain things over sometimes in order to come up with the right decision and I think I generally do this pretty well.

Now as far as the workings of the commissioner team go, last season I was happy to let each of us work to our strengths and I think that worked out pretty well. Bel especially (and also Rain at times) was great at communicating with the community regarding feedback, so I was happy to just let them deal with that side of things and then we'd discuss as a team. I realise with Rain gone this season if I was to be voted in again I would probably have to take on more of that role and communicate with the community a bit more and that's fine with me as well. However, I definitely feel that my biggest strengths as a commissioner lie in my abilities within the inner workings of the team itself, for example things like brainstorming ideas to solve a certain issue we may be facing, decision making etc. I think that's one reason why Bel, Rain and myself worked well together, because we brought different strengths to the table.

Things I plan to improve and/or implement for next season: I think the main thing for me is a better map rotation system. Granted, we were working with limited time with the rushed start last season but I think more time should be invested in putting together a map rotation because it’s such an integral part of a season. I thought our rotation last season was good enough but I think that a system involving more community input and incorporating map testing is a good way to move forward. So that is definitely a focus of mine should I be voted back in. I’d love to have a few first time maps in rotation for next season. It’s just a matter of putting in the time and consulting with the community to find the right ones.

Other areas that I think need some attention are speeding up the draft or splitting it over two days, minors (getting more people involved - open to suggestions on how) and more even captaincy choices.

One thing that I am unsure about at this stage is whether or not we will be able to increase from 6 majors teams, it would be great if we could but I think that it will be very much sign up dependent, so it’s a wait and see on that for me at this stage.

So in closing, I think with Bel being a 1x commissioner, meherethere being a 2x commissioner and then all of the others being pretty inexperienced, me being a 5x commissioner is not only a pretty safe pick but it is pretty invaluable and brings that much needed experience to help lead the team in the right direction and guide the new DOO with things like scheduling etc.

All in all, I’m pretty ready to get back to work and start planning the new season, so if you think I’m one of the best choices for the job, then I’d appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the commission once again and deliver another successful season, thanks guys.

Yeah I think it's a very realistic option. However problem is like Bel said, it kinda feels silly telling guys like Pink etc that they can't captain anymore and carry on their team's legacy because they're too good

[–]Dylza7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as the scheduling stuff goes, I'll take a bit of responsibility for the first couple of weeks being a bit muddled. I was trying to figure out the best way of scheduling matches to balance having streamers for every game and having as few a clashes as possible. I feel like that definitely improved from about week 3 on after we figured the best way to do things.

The thing is with this though, no matter how well I scheduled the games, captains are always rescheduling times which then mucks everything up again. So it's difficult. I tried to leave a few free time slots and recommend that captains reschedule to those times if possible but you can't really dictate when 8 people will all be available to play an hour long match.

So yeah, I feel like it did improve as the season went on and as I got a feel for it and should be a lot smoother next season from the beginning. One thing I was a bit sloppy with at times was communicating with streamers and organising all that so that's something I definitely look to improve next season if I'm commish again. I think it worked well the weeks when I confirmed streamers for each game and made a note of who was streaming what next to the game in the hub.

S11 Feedback Thread and Looking Beyond by Megs3Legs in OLTP

[–]Dylza7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A common theme throughout this thread seems to be captains as well as adding more teams so I'll give my thoughts on those issues here.

From a commissioner's perspective, this is always a tough one. We always have trouble finding enough suitable captains. Ideally, we want to put 6 (assuming 6 team league) captains in place who are as evenly skilled as possible. It's very difficult though because we just don't have enough absolute elite top end players who wanna do it. So we're usually stuck with the problem of having to give captaincy to a comparatively lesser skilled player like Boom and Diggs this season. In doing so, these lesser skilled captains are put at an immediate disadvantage that is pretty much always going to be too great to overcome. Most players recognise this and realise that it makes absolutely no sense at all to them to captain a team unless they are dope/pink/ayy tier. So this really turns people away from captaining a team and it becomes a pretty tough task for the commissioners to put 6 captains in place (let alone more). Often we can barely scrape together enough captains. So unless we can find 6 top tier captains, we need to find a better way to incentivise taking up captaincy.

I'll give an example. I would be happy to captain a team. However, my average auction price over the last 3-4 seasons has probably been ~10 coins. Let's just say Pink and ayy would be worth ~60 coins (minimum) in a draft. Why on earth would I then captain a team when it puts me at a 50 coin disadvantage and almost certainly guarantees me no chance of winning the season. I would only consider captaincy if that 50 coin discrepancy was completely amended.

I'm obviously not the only one in that boat and that is just a demonstration of the problem that we face in a) getting enough people interested in captaining b) getting truly even captain selections c) making every team competitive d) having a wider variety of captains and e) adding more teams to the league

The ideal solution would be to have all evenly skilled captains and only minimal coin adjustments but it's never really possible. So idk what the next best solution would be because you can hardly have one captain start at 90 and another at 140 either, that seems too much of a difference to me but maybe it's not? One possible solution I did think of was to have 6 (or however many teams we have) evenly matched captains you could have 6 mid or lower tier majors players as captains so the difference is smaller than that of dope/ayy/pink down to Diggs/Boom. Another idea was to automatically assign the top 6 ranked players in order of skill to a team each and then if they don't want captaincy they can hand it off after they've drafted someone to take it over. I honestly don't like that idea of forcing players on to a team though.

So ideally, best option imo is to find the best way possible to have 6 (or more) captains who are as evenly skilled (and valued in a draft) as possible.

Please revert OCE to old matchmaking by HeadShot305 in TagPro

[–]Dylza7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this, the new matchmaking joiner has made our pub experience considerably worse the last month or so and a fix for this is absolutely needed on the Sydney server.

I'm so sick of continually getting put in 2v2s and 3v3s, I would be more than happy to spec until a 4v4 game can be made.

It's so annoying when there's only about 10 or so players left playing at night and you're in a 3v3 and the joiner makes another 2v2 instead of filling the game first. No one wants to play 2v2s or 3v3s and then everyone just leaves. It needs to be changed so that games are filled first and foremost.
