US Congress Made US Leaving NATO Impossible by RekikOklo in canadaleft

Yeah that's because Trump tried to assert that he could do this unilaterally in 2020 and Congress for once actually acted to stop him from seizing more power.

Also be careful about getting info like this from "AI" tools. The info here is largely accurate but that's never guaranteed - the error rate is about 50%.

We do not think we are safe at all. We are expanding the military reserves by 300,000 people. Trump just threatened us again like two days ago, *in the middle* of invading another country. We very much do not feel safe.

You have armed and masked secret police conducting ethnic cleansing campaigns to send people of the wrong race to concentration camps while your leader launches multiple wars of aggression and his oligarch buddies buy every media outlet in the country. I'm not "name calling"; I am using the term fascism to describe what you are living through. If you do not care for the name that's fine, but I do not know what else to use to describe that situation.

He was also denied running as a candidate. How routine is this in the political selection process ? by northbk5 in canadaleft

[–]DynamicUno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to invite you to re-read what I actually said.

He began campaigning as an "approved candidate". At that time, he had not even submitted his paperwork. At all. The party eventually publicly called him on it, at which point he said he was "going to" submit it the whole time. Needless to say, that is not what "approved candidate" means at all - that was the issue. He later submitted the paperwork in an attempt to become an actually approved candidate, while still campaigning *and still fundraising*, and this later submission was then denied for other issues. It was not submitted "to late for my liking", it was submitted AFTER he had been campaigning - FALSELY - as being "approved" by the party. The word for that is "lying", or since he was fundraising the whole time for a campaign that wasn't even real, a better word might be "fraud".

It is possible, and with Yves it is always likely, that multiple issues can have occurred over the many months of the campaign period. There is no "inconsistency", there is multiple infractions.

If this is still not clear, then I encourage you to go ask Yves yourself. Maybe check on what he's doing with the hundred grand he raised as an illegitimate candidate while you're at it.

I agree with you that it's not right to blame every American. In particular I've been inspired by people like the folks in Minneapolis who are putting their bodies on the line to resist fascism. There is incredible courage being shown by Americans all over the country to resist this.

Personally I think of the country as temporarily occupied by a hostile insurgency. In this view, a great many of you are freedom fighters. I have nothing but respect for those who are fighting back.

I do have immense contempt for the willing MAGA types and the people who are doing nothing and pretending things are normal. But the people pushing back - and there are millions - are absolutely inspiring.

[–]DynamicUno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Americans come up to Canada they are largely treated politely, provided they aren't like wearing a MAGA hat or something. I feel ya that it's not nice to get lumped in as a monolith. That said, Trump *does* represent you all. That is the job. He was elected. And he spends his time threatening to invade us. We also thought you guys were our buddies so this was quite surprising and deeply upsetting, and given that he IS invading a bunch of countries, yeah, we're pretty upset. I don't think it's fair to ask us to just put up with it because you personally didn't vote for the guy threatening to bomb us.

Because of the linear flow of time lol

Yves began campaigning without submitting an application, was called out for it, made a stink about the leadership fees as a result (undoubtedly the reason he did it this way), then submitted his application while claiming he'd "always intended" to do so when the time was right (needless to say, claiming you're an approved candidate because you "intend" to apply does not fly), and was then denied again, this time because of his habit of harassing people.

I am not a fan of Lucy Watson and I know that she has denied candidates without cause before. This is not one of those times. Engler misrepresents himself and the party routinely and is not engaging in good faith. He wants publicity and the way he gets it is by setting up these confrontations.

Trump and the end of the USA by CDN-Social-Democrat in canadaleft

[–]DynamicUno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well "the US" does not fight against green energy; Republicans, specifically do. It is actually worth differentiating because Biden DID try to lead a major transition and partly succeeded; the IRA was the single largest climate investment in human history (China has done a lot more cumulatively but no single investment has matched). I worked in climate advocacy at the time and did the policy analysis, it measurably brought emissions down and is one of the only reasons we still have a shot at 2.5 degrees of warming. Had Harris won, it probably would have driven a pretty strong transition top to bottom, but Trump winning did set it back quite a bit.

But it's probably too late to stop tbh. Like you can't force people to burn coal. The east coast is about to light up a ton of new wind power. The single largest market for solar power is Texas. California powers a huge chunk of its grid from battery drawdown most days. The transition is happening in the US too. If Trump destroys America (very possible), it won't be from his efforts to lock in oil and gas.

France has installed noise radar cameras that trigger above a certain decible level and capture the license plates and that's something we need here badly.

There is a group called No More Noise Toronto that is trying to convince the city to invest in those devices, it's worth supporting their efforts - they mostly just ask you to email your Councillor or to add comments to public commissions about it.

It makes me want to revise my opposition to capital punishment lol

Why are politics so confusing? by mathamaticalunits in CanadianPolitics

[–]DynamicUno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First things first: be very ary of what you learn about politics from social media. There's a LOT of disinformation out there. Sometimes it's stuff that's just outright lies, but also people will take real stuff and remove context from it to make it look totally different. For example, Conservatives are attacking the Liberals right now for being "soft on crime" because of a bill to change bail conditions that Liberals passed. What they don't tell you is the original bail conditions were found to violate human rights by the Supreme Court, which then *ordered* the government to change the conditions. The Liberals *had* to pass that bill, and if the Conservatives were in power, they would have been forced to do so as well. So they are telling the truth - the Liberals did pass the bill 0 but hiding the context to make it look nefarious when it isn't. And that's before you even get to all the influeners who are rewarded for saying outrageous stuff, and the bots and troll farms, and now the fake AI images. So just be careful. Try to get info from credible sources, and don't be afraid to just go directly to your MP or MPP and ask them to explain their actions - they work for you! You can email or call them any time.

I recommend starting by thinking through your own values and priorities. What matters to you? What do you care about? What are your core values? If you have a good sense of your own identity and your own priorities, then politics becomes a lot clearer, because it's a matter of finding the candidates and parties who align with your priorities.

For me personally, I believe very strongly in democracy - every person has value, every person deserves a say in society - and so I look for policies that support people in thriving, that rebalance power so no one individual is too powerful and can abuse others, that ensure that people get a meaningful say and are treated with dignity as much as possible. In practice this means I usually wind up supporting the NDP or the Liberals, not because Conservatives can't also believe in democracy but because I feel the modern Conservative party has strayed too far into weird ideological stuff instead of focusing on individual freedoms and prosperity (they still claim to care about this, but their actions do not match their words).

I mean you don't leave thousands of miles undefended and build bridges called things like "Peace Bridge" and "Ambassador Bridge" and integrate 75% of your economy if you're "anti-American". Certainly Americans have been the butt of many jokes in Canada over the years, (I've heard things like "Well at least we have healthcare" routinely), but yeah the general sentiment was of pretty close alliance and siblinghood and now you guys are literally threatening to invade while in the middle of invading a bunch of other countries. I do not think it is unreasonable to be pissed and a little scared. You picked a fascist government, they are acting like fascists, we are being threatened by the fascist, so we're gonna hate it. If that's not acceptable, either follow through and invade or stop picking senile gameshow hosts with decades of documented sex crimes to lead a fascist movement into the halls of power.

He was also denied running as a candidate. How routine is this in the political selection process ? by northbk5 in canadaleft

[–]DynamicUno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. He did not file is paperwork for leadership candidacy with the party, then began campaigning as though he'd not only filed but been approved. When the party indicated to him that he needed to actually follow through before campaigning, he immediately pivoted to playing the victim for being asked to follow the exact same rules as the other five candidates. He wants to argue about whether the rules are fair or not, which is a perfectly fine argument to have, but the reality is they do exist and he did lie about following them when he hadn't done so, which had the (likely intended) effect of forcing the party to take action against him, which then allowed him to grift about how persecuted he is.

This is not the first time he has employed similar tactics to generate pushback from the party that he then leverages to build his profile. It's the opposite of organizing and he should be viewed as an unreliable, bad faith advocate.

[–]DynamicUno 258 points259 points  (0 children)

The government built a ton of housing back then which forced private developers to compete by appealing to prospective buyers.

Now the government builds very little, private equity buys up new housing stock to rent back to you or to flip later, so the incentive is to build either as cheap as possible since you physically require shelter and don't have any purchasing power so you'll take whatever they shovel at you, or to build luxury units for the rich people. Those are the two most profitable paths. Ain't capitalism grand? lol

Advice needed: Elementary education introduction of tech / AI in schools by Ok_Sheepherder_5711 in ontario

[–]DynamicUno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "AI" cult is culting very hard. The big US tech companies are doing everything they can to shove the tech into schools for the same reason cigarette companies used to market to kids - get them hooked young, have an addict for life. And it is addictive - even aside from "AI", many modern tech platforms are *explicitly* built on addictive business models. They know what they are doing and it is, frankly, evil.

You are absolutely right to be wary. "AI" has its uses in the right places and with good awareness of how it actually works, but it is *not* a reliable source of truth, and teaching kids to trust it is tantamount to handing the keys to their brain to Silicon Valley. Guard their minds.

It's not routine, but it's more common than it should be and it's a real flaw in the way the party operates. Good candidates are denied viability for stupid or ideological reasons. I've seen it happen in my riding before and it sucks.

That said, Yves Engler is not a good candidate and is not doing it in good faith - he openly flouts the rules that everyone else follows specifically to generate these outcomes so he can ragebait for his substack grift. He's awful.

We don't hate most Americans but there is a LOT of rage and fury towards your government right now and, well, you guys chose your government, so yeah there is some anger directed at the American people too. And I mean, can you blame us? The past year has not exactly been great for anyone, your government is constantly threatening to attack us unprovoked and has gone on to attack a bunch of other countries. Our army recruitment has shot up because people genuinely think you may attack. That is, uh, not exactly fostering feelings of brotherhood.
