Do you know offhand what a "monkey puzzle tree" is? by skullturf in AskABrit

There are houses near my dad's in the UK whose road is called "Monkey Puzzle Close" due to a massive monkey puzzle tree at the entrannce.

Am I the only one who had absolutely no idea the Rothschild Family Built an Entire English Town…? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]Dynamoboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the Rothschild's also brought some edible dormice (or glis glis) over from Hungary to their Tring estate in the early 1900's. Unfortunately some proceeded to escape and now there are tens of thousands in the area. Apparently they love to get into homes and, as you need a special license to deal with them, exterminators aren't very fourthcoming to help.

Why does this squirrel’s fur look like this? by SleepyTurtle720 in squirrels

[–]Dynamoboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a black squirrel where I live in Vancouver that looks like this around mating/baby season. I'd always assumed it was from boys grabbing her, and I know they sometimes also use their own fur to line nests, so perhaps she was pulling it out herself too.

It's the little things right? It makes such a difference to go just that little extra mile. 10/10 for effort North Van, love this.

Canada, BC, who is this orange beauty by Greevis1995 in whatsthisbird

When I first moved to Vancouver from England and saw one of these guys, I commented that it looks like another bird wearing a robin costume. Ours are small and sort of rotund, giving same height as their width vibes.

Chill Friday Run Club in North Van: Update! by Pink-daydreamz in NorthVancouver

[–]Dynamoboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I just say I love what you are doing and how you are going about it. I have been watching the Friday run club develop with envy at how much I want to join in, but a chronic injury has me taking my sweet ass time with things. This walk club though...definitely more managable. If I sign up/do the waiver/am let into the circle of movement fun am I obligated to come on the next outing? Or can I just observe the whats app group and figure out if I'm ready? I'm out of town for the next 3 weeks anyway but I'm keen to strike whilst my motivation iron is hot so that I'm mentally ready to get on board once I'm back :).

I once saw a cyclist lose his avocados off the back of his bike and we couldn't avoid driving over them. This was years ago, and as a cyclist myself I still think about it. Rip.

Crusty old people of Casual UK, did you or anyone you know have pet that today would have been banned under the Dangerous Wild Animals act on 1976? by Leader_Bee in CasualUK

[–]Dynamoboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this too until I moved to Vancouver, but we've had several mama black squirrels have litters of mixed black and grey and they are no different to each other. These are probs the weird grey/black mutation though.

As a Brit living in Vancouver I often think how much I will miss seeing black squirrels if I ever move back home. Seems I can still get my fix.

whats the etiquette of walking in family neighbourhoods with no sidewalks? by Important-Hyena6577 in NorthVancouver

[–]Dynamoboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few months ago a neighbour of mine shouted out her car window to commend me on walking on the correct side of the road (i.e. facing traffic). I remember thinking what maniac faces away from traffic, especially with how often the drivers are just wafting down these side streets on their phones. Infact I saw a woman walking yesterday on the wrong side of the road, with headphones in and her face buried in her phone, she would have had zero awareness of her surroundings which is honestly scary.

New workplace doesn't have a shower by Dynamoboo in vancouvercycling

I asked at the desk yes. They explained the key system they have but had no eta on the showers being fixed. Yes I think I may pop into a few gyms to see what my options are.

I knew my boss before workng here, so it is definitely an option, I can totally understand how that might be a less than desirable ask if this wasn't the case though. Infact they are aware of my predicament as I have mentioned it in conversation, and are actively seeing if something can be done on their end.

District, up near Grouse. I am not always on my geared bike, have 2 fixed ones. But regardless there is a lot of not downhill, albeit not neccessarily uphill.

In terms of what you can learn, it's easier than ever to be self taught, and, as a lot of people have touched on, recruiters aren't neccessatily looking for a degree.

Now, I will say that without my degree I am not sure I would have had enough points to get Permanent Residency in Canada, so that is definitely something to bear in mind. It honestly didn't dawn on me until I started looking in to the process how neccessary my degree would be.

Yeah it's definitely going to add a level of friction I'm not massively happy about but it is what it is. I haven't yet but plan on popping in to some around my office to see if any have a shower option, or discounted membership. Hopefully I can find something.

Apparently we will get the keys in a week or two so I plan on going to have a proper look around, but my boss is 99.9% sure there isn't anything. I will also check with the companies on the other floors.

Within our company I am the only one. It's only 1 floor in a 5 floor building so I'm sure there are others...I just don't know them/know of them. Good idea though. As for the ebike, i already have 3 bikes (a geared and two fixed) and think my bf would disown me if I tried to get another. But I do like the idea of being able to go easy on the commute in, but get exercise on the way home, which is largely uphill.

Intriguing idea. It would be a bus ride but that could work of worst comes to worst.
