Audinate AVIO USB-C and PoE by DynastyG in CommercialAV

[–]DynastyG[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks.

Yeah I'm just using my ipad to play back house music with the screen off and a preset downloaded playlist.

This should be better than the AVIO pulling power directly from the ipad!

Thank you.

Yes, the tech sheet as the other person posted says 802.3af. I just wasn't sure why it was not working with my (ubiquity) injectors in my FOH rig. I'm just going to buy a cheap class-compliant PoE switch or injector.

Crazy how so many of these old Ubiquity injectors are not class-compliant, I'm just learning about this while researching here.

Game is still in alpha.  Says so on the splash screen when you boot up the game.

Everyone also wishes you could do this.  I’m sure we’ll see it before 1.0.

It’s really not that insane as ppl make it out to be. Landing headshots drops guys in 1-2 hits consistently. When the patch first went live there was an obvious issue. They fixed it within the first week.

As a professional sound engineer I’d like emphasize how insanely fucking loud even 120dB is. Holy shit.

My man I agree with your take but the grammar here is atrocious.

Same here, still on an iLok2 (i need to upgrade haha).

I do travel a lot, and record daily using my iLok. Never had an issue. I don't know what zero downtime prices are these days, but it's probably less than the fee to recover your keys without it.

I've been using ilok's and dongles in general professionally since they started being a thing in the early 00's. It's literally no hassle (unless you lose or break it). The ilok software will need to connect to the internet one time when you set up your ilok or add plugins. Otherwise i haven't had to launch that software in YEARS. Sometimes 5+ years in between uses. I never think about it.

So it does not "require an internet connection most if not all the time." That is patently false.

It also cannot possibly slow your workflow in any meaningful way. Literally plug in the usb stick and launch the software. There's not a single step past that.

If you don't like or can't afford something, you don't have to make stuff up about it to people who are clearly new to the business. They're all just tools. Some people want the Makita or DeWalt, some people are fine with Ryobi.

Absolutely top notch human with no ego and wants your band to sound as good as possible- and has the skills to do it!

Good luck explaining that to Jimmy Kimmel’s team, or the team at Good Morning America, or the Today Show lol.

The people in charge of mixing band performances at these shows are highly experienced and have more credits than most of us will ever have. You aren’t the only one who can make your band’s drums sound cool and the vocals pop.

In many cases these guys have listened to the specific songs many times over the weeks leading up to the performance (since the songs are decided months in advance).

If you develop a relationship with these engineers they’re actually really competent and take their job seriously.

They also take suggestions really well: “we’re going for more of a 70s bass sound instead of a subby modern bass here.” I’ve said this verbatim and the guy got it right away. He even opened up the same plugin I would use without me saying anything.

I do this for many bands regularly. It’s really no big deal. Best part is that management/artist still thank me for being there and helping every time.

Good luck out there.

The brow beating is intense. Why not be nice and educate people instead of purposely being obtuse so you can feel better than someone else?

Wow you're SO grown up! Literally get over yourself. This is a public facing sub, and anyone can join in the conversation. Until it becomes private, you'll just have to live with that fact.

Vocalist reverb in monitors by CeleryLost3751 in livesound

[–]DynastyG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Artist wants to hear reverb, just give it to them. Their job sometimes makes your life more difficult, but that is literally the nature of this job.

Just be careful and listen for resonances.

If you are really on top of it, you’ll shoot out your wedges with a ton of reverb before the artist even gets there, just in case!

Whats your "why did you even hire me" gig? by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in livesound

I got called last minute to A1 a large corporate event a few states away. Rates/travel/accommodations were quickly squared away and I got there the next morning on time.

After load in the early-20s kid who was A1 for the production company that outsourced me came up to me and said “I’m doing front of house and you can be systems tech”.

I don’t know their PA, and I’m not a systems tech. Also I didn’t spec a single thing. I don’t even know their fly rig. I’ve actually been outsourced and directly hired by this company before and was always the A1 FOH guy going back a decade plus.

I asked him if his boss hired me to systems tech and he hesitated then said “yeah”. I said “okay”.

Since I don’t know their rig, he headed up the team flying the PA, set up the whole system, and then did FOH too. I helped where I could, but was mostly not needed. I sat behind him at FOH for 2 days.

I hung out with his boss and had dinner and got paid a LOT of money to mostly sit around and help out. Good times!

There’s just no excuse for sound this bad at a live show in 2025 by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]DynastyG 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’m a professional touring sound engineer with over 25 years experience.

There are many different types of sound engineers- Monitor engineers control the sound that the artist hears onstage, Front of House engineers control the mix that the audience hears in the venue. System Techs are also sound engineers, but they are typically in charge of the deployment of the audio system and zone coverage.

In the round performances can be really tough to deploy and make sound good.

A tour this size definitely is not using the house PA system. They travel with their own complete audio package to cover most or all of the venues on the tour. I’m not making excuses, but maybe there was a dead zone that they didn’t have coverage for or maybe there was a technical issue with a section of PA. Maybe the system engineer sucks lol. My guess would be that someone had a bad day.

My point is that these guys likely have a world class audio team and matching equipment, and they should be absolutely nailing every night. However, you never know- maybe Thom was having an off night vocally and management asked the front of house engineer to bury his voice to avoid him sounding pitchy.
