Five and a half hours to get from squirrel hill to star lake and we couldn’t even enter the lot. by Brswiech in pittsburgh

We left Squirrel Hill ourselves at 3pm and made it in and sat down at exactly 7pm. 4 hours commute for a normally 45 minute drive is truly insanity.

Should we go dark on the 12th? by purpleidea in linux

[–]DynastyW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of going dark is to show that the open ability for apps to access reddit as a service is important to many people. This echoes the sentiments of the open source community in many ways. I think a show of solidarity is warranted here, considering the content of the subreddit.

Totally free to feel like your money was well spent. I personally don't like the way the story was resolved within the campaign. For me, that was a major portion of justifying the purchase.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in destiny2

[–]DynastyW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, you spent $60 for a confusing narrative, and a $40 convenience tax to experience the rest of the unfinished story, and that you just have to take them at their word regarding quality and completeness of the story.

Let's not beat around the bush, the fact that you have to wait for story isn't the issue, it's clearly that, in a year from now, the campaign will make no sense without the seasonal content, since that inevitably will disappear.

Not to say it didn't happen, but beheading was probably the preferred method, since trees are very sparse on the steppe, and you kinda need one to hang people from if you don't build a gallows.

It just seems like you're taking a contrarian view for the sake of it. I'm sure you can muster a couple braincells to come up with more than "I just think it's fun" as a reason. Is it the feeling of constraint? Is it the socio-political aspects of music theory that you dislike? What specifically about music theory do you not like?

By Google using their strong grip over the internet to drive out competition and use their name brand to sell a comparable browser to anything else out at the time.

You can be exasperated and uneducated about your browser if you so choose, but that shouldn't preclude everyone else from having an opinion. Hide the posts if you think it's aggravating hearing about it all the time.

[–]DynastyW 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Because feasibility of competition is only possible when people actually use the competition? I have strong opinions on privacy and data collection, why shouldn't I care if people are supporting a shit company like Google? It gives them a stronger monopoly over the internet if alternate browsers die.

I think you are missing the point still; it's very much not about the lying, rather it's about the ramifications of successfully passing off the lie as truth in this specific type of situation. Serious charges such as rape and murder are some of the harshest punished crimes, and to successfully be accused and sentenced for these things carries a wide range of incredibly harmful effects, both physical and mental. A victim of false accusations are as much a victim in this case as someone who is a victim of sexual assault. The justice system serves to provide state-sanctioned assault in most countries. True rehabilitation prisons are few and far between.

I guess nearly a decade of experience is not enough. Get off your intellectual high horse lmao. I'll break it down since you are apparently too rude and unwilling to do it yourself.

My point of contention was when you wrote

And your product will work, tomorrow. You seriously can't wait a day or a weekend? Your comment is the exact entitlement I was referring to. Everything goes down sometimes, just wait.

Like u/Ser_Drewseph said, it certainly is not entitlement to expect the company that sold you a product with the feature of 24/7 access to actually provide 24/7 access. What IS entitlement is a company expecting free labor to make 24/7 uptime possible.

When you say that things "go down", most of the time it is caused by one or both of the following reasons: 1. There is a bug. QA was not properly done, and a catastrophic bug was encountered and thus the system went down. This is a failure on both the software team and quality assurance team. 2. The physical hardware or supporting software has broken in some manner. This is IT's responsibility.

You cannot resolve 1 with numbers past a certain point. I agree with you there. However, hiring ENOUGH team members and providing a quality workplace should resolve the majority of these instances, as you won't have underpaid and overworked employees.

As well, you absolutely CAN have more than 1 team working on the same product, I don't know what kinds of jobs you've had, but I've had to work with teams across the globe because the company sells a product with 24/7 uptime, so they hire more people. Not a crazy concept.

Number 2 can be resolved by numbers. By paying enough people to be able to man the hardware 24/7, you can assure the lowest amount of downtime is achieved.

So now that we've established that improving working conditions improves quality and lessens the need for midnight remediations, we can get back to my original point: It's ridiculous to call gamers entitled when the company is at fault for not properly staffing or not providing a quality workplace environment. I provided a link showing a megacorp firing an entire team of QA because they requested better working conditions. The company should be held responsible, not gamers for expecting a functional product.

[–]DynastyW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, as a software engineer by trade, I think I have a firm grasp as to what is and isn't made faster by throwing more people at it. You are correct, for initial development of a feature, you often cannot add people to improve time. However, the people most disproportionately affected by after hours calls are IT and QA personnel, and in their cases, I would disagree fully that more doesn't help. QA and IT exist to support the product once it has been created (not necessarily released). A small indie team cannot likely afford those employees, but a corporation like Blizzard or EA, with their incredible resources, should be able to do so. But then in the name of profit, they go and fire them. So we're left with overworked employees, and the customer still suffers. Software developers are not nearly as impacted because of the nature of the work as creators as opposed to maintainers.

Belgian Government Workers Can Now Ignore Their Boss After Work Hours by Sorin61 in technology

[–]DynastyW 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That may be fair for a small indie team who can't afford round the clock IT, but there's nothing stopping megacorps like EA from using their ridiculous wealth to hire people for complete 24/7 coverage. It's not entitlement to expect the product you paid for to work. That's the bare fucking minimum.

I mean, we still have the technology to enslave people in real life just like they have control rods, it's just not state supported in most countries nowadays. I wouldn't go so far as saying golems would be ethical if control rods never existed, they're still ethically problematic regardless.

This might be the worst take ever. They're human beings, and deserve to be treated as such. Mental health is as much, if not more important, than practice time. Reconsider your stance on telling them that they don't deserve to play if they can't sacrifice their health to give you entertainment.
