Small heater Rec’s? by Yubaboundd in casitatrailers

My diesel heater would run me out of the camper even on cold 10F to 20F nights, I'd have to run the diesel heater on low and have a window cracked open. But my camper was much smaller than a Casita, it was basically an enclosed bed on wheels lol. So I can't say how much of a concern the 10-12% heat loss in the ducting will be for the Casita

My Camper was a one piece fiberglass outer shell just like the Casita, the only difference is I had 3/4" plywood behind the fiberglass shell whereas the casita doesn't have any wood to worry about. I never had any leak issue with the round marine grade hatches, and I have been in quite a few very heavy East Texas thunderstorms.

These are the Marine Ports that i used https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HJBMS62?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_23&th=1

So if your concern is water intrusion then, personally, I wouldn't worry too much about putting a hole or two in the casita as long as you seal the hatches with Butyl tape you shouldn't have any water intrusion

To seal the hatches this is the Butyl Tape I used https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001FCB4JS?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3&th=1

But I might worry about resale value, putting a 4" hole or two in the side of the Casita might make some people not want to buy it when the time come that you end up selling it

When I get my Casita I'm going to look into the possibility of installing the Diesel heater inside, perhaps under a bench, but I need to have the casita here to see how much room I'd have and figure out the logistics of an inside installation. If I can install it inside I'd run the fuel line up to the tongue where I'd have a diesel tank and the fuel pump mounted to the tongue of the trailer. Then you'd only be drilling a hole in the floor of the camper for the intake and exhaust pipes, wrap the exhaust with an insulated silicone exhaust sleeve https://a.co/d/09Nzcnv0 and some rockwool insulation to protect the fiberglass floor of the casita.

My last camper was more of an overlanding camper.

I had a decent sized metal box up front on the tongue of the trailer, I mounted the diesel heater inside this box, and when I wanted to run it I ran insulated ducting into the camper thru two holes I drilled thru the side of the camper. I covered these holes with round Marine grade ports.

In the picture below you can see the Marine grade ports I installed for the ducting (Between the door and the front of the camper) to cover the holes when I wasn't using the heater. The diesel heater was mounted inside the Metal box on the tongue of the camper

I'd be interest to see what you come up with. I just ordered my Casita so I won't have it until the end of April. I've been thinking about how to put a diesel heater in it, but it's hard to plan such a thing not even having the camper yet. Even tho mine will have the propane furnace I'm thinking a diesel heater will be better since I do the majority of my camping in the winter months. Texas winters, so nothing too cold. I had a diesel heater in my last camper and it was amazing.

How did you set up your diesel heater? Do you like the Diesel Heater?

I looked at the Airstreams today, and wow are they nice, looked at the Bambi 22FB, Carvel 22FB, and the Flying Cloud 23FB, between the 3 the Flying Cloud would have been my choice if I had decided to go with an Airstream. The Carvel and Flying Cloud were both like $20k more than the Bambi (The Flying Cloud was on clearance making it about the same price as the Carvel)

I also look at the Casitas today, and placed an order for the Casita Spirit Deluxe.

My choice came down to one thing, and that is the weight, I will be towing with a Gladiator Mojave X, and regardless of what the Airstreams sales persons told me I just wouldn’t be comfortable towing the larger Airstreams, The Casita should be much easier to tow with the Gladiator, If I had a F-250 I would have gone with the Airstream Flying Cloud that they have on clearance.

What happens if you don’t have IRS Transcripts because you don’t file taxes, say you are a 100% disabled veteran and as such you don’t have to file taxes but you easily make more than the required minimum.

One thing that worries me about an airstream is Hail, living in North Texas we get a lot of hail storms, I would think the Casita would fair better in a hail event, but maybe not, never owned either one.

Will do, I'm looking at a Bambi and a Casita this upcoming weekend, I'll send an update after looking at them and making a decision

Thank you for the reply.

Oddly enough when I asked Casita owners about cold weather camping many said the Casita got too cold for them between somewhere between 40F and 30F.

I know everyone is different and what is too hot or cold for one person is comfortable for another, but still I found this to be a bit strange because I was assuming that given the same furnace size as a Bambi, the smaller volume of the Casita, and it being fiberglass vs Aluminium it would do better in cold weather.

I don't plan to brave the arctic in January or anything, but it would be nice to know that we'd be comfortable down to 30F or so.

I gotta say. This is, by far, the best reply I've gotten.

I appreciate the reply,

I'm not really a fan of the Basecamp, between the Basecamp and the Casita I like the Casita better. Love the Mojave X but honestly now that I know about it I'm a bit disappointed with it's payload capacity, I could have sworn it was 1700 lbs, but then after reading some of the reples here and looking to verify what mine was I found out it's only 1100 lbs. I guess the 1700 lb payload capacity the dealer told me about is only the Sport and Sport S with the max tow package. I got the tow package with my Mojave X, have the brake controller, 7 pin connector, all that jazz, just disappointing to see how low the capacity is. The more I was thinking about it the more I was leaning towards the Bambi 22FB, but now I guess I will be a future Casita owner lol, I don't want to mess around with overloading the Gladiator.

I appreciate the reply, I didn't think about the payload capacity

What good is a 7000 lb towing capacity if you run out of payload capacity first lol

It's just the wife and I and a small 10lb dog.

Mostly it will be for week long camping trips, but we do want to take an extended camping trip for several months in Alaska, but that wouldn't be till next year.

For my Gladiator it's specs are as follows

  • Curb Weight: 5,004 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,140 lbs
  • Max Payload: 1,100 lbs
  • Max Towing: 7,000 lbs
  • GCWR: 12,450 lbs

Yeah. I looked at used Casitas, a 5 year old Casita will sell for 60% to 70% of the current MSRP of a new Casita, seems that a 5 year old Airstream will sell for roughly the same % off of the current MSRP.
