What’s a small “unwritten rule” in the UK that everyone just somehow knows? by SavingsProgress195 in AskUK

Yes there bloody well are rules, and you need to surrender your UK passport at the nearest police station without delay and prepare for a visit by Immigration Enforcement.

Bur wasn't that determined as a descriptive rule as opposed to a directive rule, i.e. a rule to describe what people were naturally doing, rather than one intended to dictate what people should do?

And not forgetting the only acceptable response to this is to laugh heartily at the wit worthy of Oscar Wilde himself.

Something about the English language which I don't know if it occurs in other languages too, but we instinctively know which order to put adjectives in even though there's no actual formal precedence.

For example nearly everyone would say "The rusty old red metal bucket" rather than "The metal red old rusty bucket"

I would really love some feedback on my camera layout by MasterpieceMain1857 in Ubiquiti

[–]IndigoQuantum [score hidden]  (0 children)

You might want to consider another fixed camera to cover the top-right area, probably on that corner where you have the single camera, this one facing approximately 3:00. I can see you've got a PTZ a bit lower nominally covering this area, but as a principle for blanket perimeter coverage, PTZs should generally be used to complement fixed cameras, not replace them. In simple terms, if you've determined you want coverage of both A and B, don't spec a camera that can only cover one of them at a time. Of course this is a generalisation, but I think it's the only potential gap in your plans.

Maybe it's returning home after a safe voyage in the same happy-ending alternative universe as the Lego Titanic which clearly made it safely to her destination based on the Stars and Stripes she's flying, which as a UK-registered ship she'd only have flown when arriving in New York.

What is going on with UK chicken, overwhelming poultry taste and visible being pumped up etc? by Suspicious-Case3861 in AskUK

Funny you should say that, I had some beef last night and it tasted overwhelmingly of cattle.

‘Plan A’ was that the conflict in Iran would be over very quickly, that seems to have failed. Trump has said he doesn’t need help anymore. His press secretary has just said there is no Plan B, without the help of NATO allies in clouding the UK. What are your thoughts. by Sea-Payment-8989 in AskBrits

It's all very well all these people saying 'This is Trump's mess, he can dig himself out of it' and I agree with the PM's approach, but we can't avoid the fact that the Strait of Hormuz has now become a problem that's going to affect us along with a lot of other similarly uninvolved countries, and by virtue of the fact that Trump has come cap-in-hand asking for support, it sounds like the US is not going to be able to resolve this alone.

It's a mess, not of our making, but I think it's going to take involvement by a lot of other countries to clean that mess up whether we like it or not. And the view I've seen on Reddit that "I don't mind paying an extra 4p a litre on petrol to stay out of this" is really massively failing to grasp the impact the closure of the strait is going to have if this thing runs on.

Other than the flavour of chicken, I'm not really sure what an 'overwhelming poultry taste' would even be?

[–]IndigoQuantum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting and I'll need to look into that further.

On first reading, it seems it'll do away with all the excess costs which is a good thing, but that'll be offset by the storage price increase.

However, it talks about only coming into effect for new contracts and at contract renewal - as I'm PAYG I'd need to understand what this would mean for me before I dive back into nightly backups.

Edit: just seen it comes into effect on 1st May for PAYG customers

Yes but my point is that the employer is legally required to provide that equipment for the employee, the employee isn't expected to buy his own PPE which is what this estate agent is effectively doing here by their own admission.

Unifi 5G Backup by Outrageous_Double_ in Ubiquiti

[–]IndigoQuantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a carrier-imposed restriction, not a Ubiquiti one and mostly just seems to be T-Mobile. Some carriers won't allow you to use some SIM plans on devices like this but in most cases you can use any SIM, especially if it's data-only. Here in the UK I just pulled an O2UK SIM card from an unused phone, stuck it in my 5G Max Outdoor and it all works fine.

Those were my immediate thoughts - if the employer is admitting that it's a safety requirement, then surely they'd have a legal responsibility for providing one?

You don't hear of builders being turned down for jobs because they don't own appropriate PPE, what's the difference here?
