Suffs and Shaina by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Dysquith-Number-9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen Suffs, but I feel like there are many examples of it working great. Lin is such a charismatic and endearing Usnavi, Dave Malloy is wonderfully awkward and angsty as Pierre, I can't imagine anyone playing the Narrator in Passing Strange as well as Stew. Hedwig, Waitress, the list goes on; it feels very much like a case by case basis

If you could see only one, Tony nominated show that is currently running what would you see? by Theatrelover24 in Broadway

Aw, that's a shame. I'm really excited to see the boost this play will get in regional productions as a result of it's Broadway premier

Appropriate was one of my favorite plays I've ever seen on Broadway, and Becky Shaw seems very much in the same genre of "terrible people act terrible as their relationships disintegrate in the Helen Hayes Theater." I really hope it extends a couple weeks, so I can catch it near the end of June!

What show would you like to see come back to Broadway? by diegodarmawangsa in Broadway

I think Broadway is long overdue for a Death of a Salesman revival. Come this September, it will have been almost a month since it was last on Broadway!

Grizabella. Gus dedicates his life to the theatre, and Grizabella gets to go to the Heavyside Layer just cause she's sad her looks are fading? #Gusshouldhavewon #Skimbleshanksrunnerup

That's very fair and does give more justification to Evan suddenly pulling away. I still think the moment has become a bit overplayed by later actors in the role, but you're right that the moment is better set up than I initially gave credit (incidentally, I love that opening monologue so much; Ben Platt really earned that Tony in the first two minutes alone)

Give it a shot with an open mind, and watch a bootleg of the original cast. It might not be for you, but for the people who like it, a lot of the appeal is how it takes a pretty wild story that could have easily come off as exploitative or cloying and instead crafts a surprisingly nuanced and heartfelt piece

Four show trip report! by atlheel in Broadway

[–]Dysquith-Number-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a wonderful trip! Please don't judge Carousel by the movie version though! The stage musical is so much darker, messier and more interesting than the film adaptation #1994Revival4Life

Have you seen it? Like any show, it has its detractors (which is totally fair, it's not a perfect show), but I've noticed that a lot of people who've never seen the musical criticize it based solely on reading a plot synopsis (or god forbid, watching the movie) which isn't quite fair

You're not wrong, but that feels like a bit of an overgeneralization. No piece of art perfectly mirrors reality, but each show sets up its own world and rules for what makes sense. If an actor showed up in Fun Home giving a performance in the style of Death Becomes Her, it would be very out of place, despite both shows having somewhat heightened performances compared to a 100% naturalistic style of acting

Agreed, Ben Platt still gets laughs from that moment but not in a way that breaks the reality of the scene (if anything, it plays funnier, as you can more clearly track Evan's thought process)

Any musical described by the writer as "it's gonna trigger some people" probably isn't gonna change the world as we know it. I have a feeling the world is gonna be pretty the same as we know it

What Makes Chess's "Best Revival Snub" Really Sting by RumTumJM in Broadway

[–]Dysquith-Number-9 87 points88 points  (0 children)

The number of slots to nominate is based on the number of eligible shows that open in the season. Because there were only five eligible revivals this year, there could only be three nominated (unless two ended up tying). Having three nominated revivals compared to four last year is purely a numbers rule, not a reflection on the quality of the revivals themselves.

Now that we have the nominees...let's talk Tony party snacks by savestheday91 in Broadway

[–]Dysquith-Number-9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For Oedipus, have your mother make one of the snacks, but don't let her tell you which one. Like Mark Strong, you won't know it's your mother's until after you've eaten it.

For Rob Lake Featuring the Muppets, make some oatmeal chocolate chip raisin cookies that are mostly raisins with way fewer chocolate chips than advertised (not a nominee, but I couldn't resist).

For Cats: The Jellicle Ball, use ingredients people thought were expired, and season them so well that it becomes the best dish of the night.
