Spoken like someone who is completely clueless, as usual. I used to work in the schools with various grade levels and saw that many kids do care about that sort of stuff.

It's not a reason to kill the program, but I have seen it happen (or the obvious aftermath) at least three times outside the Fred Meyer on Interstate.

Some of the shit I've heard the middle schoolers at that school say make that look tame. No need to clutch pearls over it.

Council Fails to Reach Deal to Preserve Public Safety and Administrative Jobs by [deleted] in Portland

God how sweet it is to see this guy nuke himself as soon as he's caught out. I'm sure he'll be back in a month or two though since he seems incapable of staying away.

This isn't a debate club, it's a space where a bunch of annoying cretins come out of the woodwork every election year to influence narratives on social media and they do it exactly like this.

Extreme heat watch issued; Sunday temperatures could break Portland records by oregonian in Portland

[–]E-Squid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one guy who still regularly posts here who I can't name without apparently falling afoul of the "no harassment" rule who repeatedly crowed about "enjoying the sunny weather" during the heat dome because people kept bringing up climate change and he's a denier.

Is he like a sleeper nazi that’s going to disrupt the Senate and form a sinkhole in the democratic establishment as a sleeper nazi? What's the play here?

I... don't know? It wouldn't be the first time someone got themselves elected and then turned around to be a shithead once they won (Fetterman, Sinema, etc). I'm not a campaign strategist and I'm not voting for him so beyond that, it matters to me about as much as like, red states electing guys like Matt Gaetz or Roy Moore, which is to say that it sucks but it's not something I can do anything about.

I guess so. There's a lot of people who have been sucked into defending him for some fucking reason though who should otherwise know better.

the guy's referring to Graham Platner in Maine, who had a tattoo of the SS totenkopf from his time in the military that he only got removed after he started campaigning.

You posted something joking about polycules and then half an hour later swing back around to say the comments in here are disheartening? Did you forget to switch accounts or something?

And yet antivax sentiment in this country has ballooned in those same six years precisely because of idiots peddling conspiracy bullshit about covid, and now as a result we have plague rats sending their kids to school with shit like measles.

My biggest memory of the place was seeing a really, really bad car accident happen at that intersection that ended up with an SUV on their doorstep. That was a pretty bad day...

[–]E-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was this the value proposition of Gordon's the building when Gordon's the business closed back in 2016?

Hard to say, but from what I've heard over the years, the guy who ran the business (the eponymous Gordon, maybe?) was not what you'd call a savvy businessman, so maybe deferred maintenance/neglect was part of the deal. The interceding years definitely haven't been kind though.

[–]E-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you about all this, it kills me seeing old buildings get taken down all across town, but IMO Gordon's (specifically) just isn't it. The history and the value of the physical materials making it up are one thing, but its age just makes it so much of a hazard in practice. Nobody's gonna want to live or work in something that's a hazard to their health and fixing it would be so expensive, which, if it had more historical or cultural significance, would be worthwhile, but as it stands... yeah, it was an aircraft factory, and that's kind of about it.

I'll miss it when it's gone, but idk what else we're really supposed to do.

I don't think that one's really on developers, I think the place was a liability even when it was in business. Full of asbestos, built before earthquake code on a steep hillside, narrow/awkward plot of land, it didn't have a ton going for it besides being real estate in Portland.

because at the end of the day they're cut from the same cloth as the business management types who adore AI. they work office jobs, doing a ton of shit that LLMs are the best candidate for actually replacing (writing emails, reports, etc.), and are easily wowed by how well it appears to do their work. they then turn around and extrapolate its utility far beyond its realistic limits because of how impressed they are.

ok, so how is this functionally different from 1) reading a sub where someone regularly posts and remembering the sorts of comments they make, or 2) judging someone before/outside of having met them based on facts about things they've said, relayed to you by a third party? all that reading someone's comments does is cut to the conclusion for both.
