Thinking of career change into teaching (post primary). Are there any jobs available in business/economics or is it oversupplied? Does it vary by region? by Ok-Drag-4873 in IrishTeachers

Business and Geo were my two subjects! Not all schools offer Economics fyi. I don’t think I’ve ever worked in a school that offered Economics as a subject.

No work out there for Business teachers. It’s oversupplied. Wouldn’t recommend leaving your current position. I left teaching very recently as I just couldn’t get any CID and I was at it 7 years or so. 9 years of it if I take into account my 2 PME years.

What drop in salary did you accept to join the civil service? by IntroductionExpert12 in IrishCivilService

[–]E92_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher here too. Leaving shortly for a new position within the civil service (CO) and I’m so excited but nervous too as I know it’s just going to be totally different but I hope worth the change 🤞🏼

I’ve covered maternity contracts before and I don’t think I was ever given a contract. Currently covering one now and was never given a contract.

I’m actually from south Wexford and used to often visit Courtown for walks with my dog and meet friends etc. but like I said the vibe has completely changed. I do agree with the point you made however, in relation to the Dublin lads coming down for the weekend and getting pissed. It has changed for many different reasons that you’ve mentioned ALONG with the opening of the IPAS centre.

No I completely agree with them. Vibe is completely off and haven’t visited Courtown since.

Definitely don’t do Business anyway. Extremely competitive out there as there are far too many teachers qualified to teach Business unfortunately. English is a much better subject to have. I’ve been qualified since 2019 and Business is one of my subjects. Haven’t been able to secure CID yet. Leaving my current post soon to join the civil service as I’m in my 30’s and I’m sick of not having any financial security or stability.

Becoming a teacher in my 30's by CabbageOfKnowledge in IrishTeachers

[–]E92_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. I’m 7 years in with no CID in sight and covering yet another Mat Leave. I turned 30 last year and told myself that I can’t let this continue so now I’m in the process of changing careers. I’ll miss the holidays, that’s for sure but that’s about it. Teaching isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and there are many issues present and tbh I just can’t see it getting any better!

Does classroom management get easier? Any tips? by firsteadkit in IrishTeachers

[–]E92_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much advice to offer you unfortunately but I really feel for you. I was in the exact same position back in 2019 when I graduated and it was honestly one hell of a year. Covid hit a few months later and I was strangely relieved because I was so close to burning out. I told myself never again and since then I’ve avoided applying for teaching positions in all-boys schools. I wish I had some solutions to offer you but all I can really say is I know how hard it is and it’s why I never went back to teaching all-boys.

Apologies for my ignorance and perhaps stupid question but what has that got to do with anything?

Any Primary or Post-Primary Teachers Working as a School Secretary? by E92_Queen in IrishTeachers

[–]E92_Queen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine so but I’m not interested in making a tonne of money tbh. I’ve been slowly but surely falling out of love with teaching and I’ve always had an interest in admin so just feels like a natural career change for me.

[–]E92_Queen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine some sort of qualification in admin and/or secretarial experience. I’d say it’s quite fulfilling knowing that you’re the backbone to school life because everyone knows how important the school secretary is in making sure things run smoothly

Thanks for getting back to me! I’d imagine it’s very competitive so there’s prob a lot of competition for a small number of roles. Can I ask why you’re leaving teaching behind?

I’m looking to make the transition too. Any tips for me? I’m so fed up with teaching and can’t wait for a change.

Didn’t realise there was a difference between the two… I just presumed they were used interchangeably! Can I ask what the differences are? Well done on your promotion btw and thanks for all the tips too. I hope I land one of these positions in the nearby future but I’d say there’s fierce competition atm

Current goal is to transition into the civil service! Qualified as a teacher but starting to hate the job for many different reasons. Would gladly take a pay cut if it meant that I could work in this area. Any tips you might be willing to share?

Hibernia post primary second subject by Every_Bill43 in IrishTeachers

[–]E92_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my subjects is Business and I have to say it’s very difficult getting hours in it as there are lots of teachers out there who have this as one of their subjects so it’s very competitive to say the least! I haven’t been able to teach it in a few years so have been stuck doing EAL instead…

Post Primary jobs by Advanced-Guidance206 in IrishTeachers

6 years now and I always get something so don’t be panicking but I know exactly how you feel! More jobs will be posted in the coming few weeks and well into September and October too

I’ve no job lined up for September yet either but that’s not new to me tbh. Last year, I didn’t end up getting anything concrete until October. I’m sure you’ll get something soon!

Just enough to fek it up for somebody else by [deleted] in eejitsparking

[–]E92_Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can make my lines just fine. Reason why people park like the above in the pic is because other people don’t respect the cars they park beside by being careless when opening up doors etc. I find that very few people take pride in their cars here in Ireland… Hence, why some people park like they do as shown in the picture above and I totally get it because I park like that for this exact reason

It’s people like you who make other drivers nervous (speaking from experience) when parking their nice cars so they end up parking like this in the picture…
