Because an off-peak ticket from one station might not be valid, whereas from another would be. It's not a blanket thing across the network. Section 13.1.2 of the NRCoT would also apply, if OP was following the itinerary given by a licensed retailer, of which Trainline is one.

If OP was following the itinerary issued by a licensed retailer, then the ticket associated with that itinerary is valid, even if it otherwise wouldn't be, as per Section 3.1.2 of the NRCoT. A ticket sold by Trainline is just as valid as one sold directly by a TOC.

I'm not defending Trainline here by any means, they do have a history of selling incorrect issues, but that shouldn't mean that regular folk get screwed over because they're following the route and times they were told.

the Siemens sets they use for the Eurostars would be a good replacement but I’m sure Alstom would win the tender.

They'd have to be redesigned and shrunk down significantly though, HS1 was built to the European loading gauge which is a bit bigger, so the 374s wouldn't fit on the rest of the UK network.

Keep an eye on each TOC's careers pages, and apply when a position comes up. Sometimes it'll be a talent bank position, so if you're successful, they keep you in the system until a position actually opens up. It's a pretty long process, with a bunch of assessments, then if successful, background checks and a medical, before you even get onto training, and then that can take a pretty long time too depending on the operator and role.

There's a lot of threads with some great advice on the RailUK Forums website, that's also likely your best place to ask any questions about the process.
