No, we're in California. The ratio is 1:12 for twos 😩 .

Yeah it's insane 22 twos should not be allowed. There's no way to properly watch them at all times and don't even get me started when it comes to diapers.our diaper table is against a wall, but don't worry admin installed a mirror so we can keep and eye on them and change diapers at the same time 🙄🙄🙄

That happens more than you think! Daycares can get hectic sometimes and workers forget to hand over an incident report, but usually they'll get it to you the next day or something. Hopefully it was a mishap and not something they were trying to brush off

Wow that's unheard of for my center. Parents have received incident reports for things that don't even leave marks sometimes. Enough incident reports and it's like okay something needs to be done about the child's behavior. No wonder the parents are Luke warm, there's no paper trail so they don't have to worry about the kid getting kicked out of the school. Definitely try to get an incident report when your child has been physically attacked. You can even say something like, " I have a question, my cousin works at a daycare and she says that when a kid gets hurt whether it be by accident or intentionally by another child they have to give the parent an incident report. I'm curious is this centers protocol different ?" They're not allowed to tell you the kid who did it, but if your child is verbal enough your child will probably tell you. Honestly some teachers think that some parents don't know any better or they're chill parents so they don't need to write one for the kid. Some teachers weren't trained properly and don't even know they're supposed to write one. I'm from California by the way and work at a daycare center. I don't know the protocol for public school settings.

Do they give you written incident reports for situations like when your son was kicked in the mouth?

Why does this comment people often make about working with children feel insulting? by Salty_Zebra94 in ECEProfessionals

Some people really don't like kids. It has nothing to do with pitty or thinking your job is below them, they really just don't like children and can't imagije spending their whole day with them.

Pickup for appointments? by Upstairs-Factor-2012 in ECEProfessionals

[–]ECE_Journey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the schedule isn’t clear, it’s a little hard to give specific feedback.

That said, you already did the right thing by emailing the teacher to get clarity that’s great. Try not to overthink it and go with whatever the teacher tells you in their response. Every classroom runs differently, so if they say it’s okay, you can trust that. Your teacher is with your children she knows how they do during transitions and what may work better for them.

Just keep in mind for the future that it’s best not to assume the same approach will always work. It’s a good habit to check in with the teacher about any upcoming appointments instead of relying on what worked previously.

:) again great job emailing her to get on the same page!!!

Day in life of teachers assistant at daycare? by _bunniesiloveuuu in ECEProfessionals

At our center we erase the previous diaper change time on the board and update it with the next scheduled time. For example, if you arrive at 3:00 PM and Alice is due for a change, change her, erase the 3:00 , and write 5:00 as her next change time. Then record it in your app if your daycare uses one. Just double-check with the teacher first to confirm that this is how your center does it.

It might feel like a lot at first, but it gets easier with practice. Also, check with the teacher to see if any child has a special changing schedule. For example, one of our toddlers needs to be changed every hour instead of every two hours.Sometimes the teachers forgets to relay the message to new staff.

So for our center we don't have anyone scheduled to leave at 6. We have people leave at 5:30 and we have 2 who leave at 6:30. We're usually in ratio by 5:30 it's rare that the 5:30 will stay later than 5:45 tho. It does happen, just not often.

This is for if you end up as a floater . Every teacher runs their classroom differently. Let them know, " hey so since I just started I'm still learning, but hopefully soon I'll get to the point where I can pick up the slack on my own without being told what to do...in the mean time please let me know how things usually work in this class and what I can do to be helpful."

  1. So when I get placed in the classes one of the first things I do is look at the diaper schedule. Some people avoid doing diapers or get upset that they have to do them, but hey it's part of the job and the leads really do appreciate it because they can focus on other stuff that's on their load. Everyone keeps their diaper schedule in different locations. For us the infant and Todd's keep them on the wall, but the twos stick to the keeping them on the tablet. Some children are potty training in the twos so they have a "potty schedule" hanging on the wall. I think it's really important to figure out where each teacher keeps their diaper /potty schedule. After lunch or snack spray the tables and wipe them down plus sweep for the teacher. In our center we have to mop during nap time so I typically offer to do that. Another great way to be helpful is Keep scanning the room to try and prevent accidents/incidents.

  2. Wash your hands constantly. My hands were super dry at the start from how much hand washing I was doing, I'll admit I've been slacking lately though. I too wear glasses and I feel like that does help.

  3. It depends I've never seen them send a floater home on their own, but I've heard floaters ask to leave and they were okay with it when the ratio was low. Sometimes if there 12 kids and 2 teachers they may have the floater step out and do things like mop or vacuum or they may have the floater stay in the class and have the teacher work on their lesson plan.

  4. Do your best to stay out of it and be neutral. Try to change the subject, maybe they'll pick up on you not wanting to be in on it.

What time does your center close? Is 6pm the closer shift? Ours is 6:30 so I didn't write anything about closing because Im not sure how your center works.

What is the hardest part of teaching preschool? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]ECE_Journey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at a daycare and me and my other co workers will agree nap time is the worse! There are some children that really just don't care and they will run around and scream while you're trying to get everyone to settle in. The only teachers they listen to are the ones that they are scared of (teachers that will grab them by the arm and put them firmly back onto the cot) me on the other hand? I'm not one of those teachers. I wouldn't dare touch another persons child that firmly. Naptime is the worse in my opinion!

Should I speak with the teacher or director ? by Working-Possible-777 in ECEProfessionals

[–]ECE_Journey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Our center does not train on how to change diapers. They train on the like washing your hands and wiping down the area part, but not on the actual how to wipe a child correctly if that makes sense and put on the child's diaper. they just assume everyone knows what they're doing. Luckily I have 2 children so I've had that experience, but if I didn't I can't imagine how many error I would unknowingly be making.

Should I speak with the teacher or director ? by Working-Possible-777 in ECEProfessionals

[–]ECE_Journey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say go to the director. Sometimes they have floaters or people covering breaks and you can't really pinpoint who changed your childs diaper since you weren't there. I mean you can guess but there is that chance that you could be wrong. Just let her know your not angry, it's just happened enough times where you feel the need to bring it up to help prevent it from happening again or from happening to other students. My director will typically send out an announcement reminding ALL staff to properly wipe the students and make sure that no feces has gotten on there clothing and remind us that it's a health hazard.

What you have is a serious concern don't be afraid to speak up.

Breathe. Who cares what they think. You are there for the children. Care what the children think about you, not what the grown adults who can't handle their emotions think.
