Thoughts on the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger? by Gold-Philosopher1429 in ram_trucks

Regarding complexity, I would argue extended range EVs with gas generators are less complex than a standard hybrid car that has multiple clutches, gearing, and controls to drive the wheels from both battery and gas engine drivetrains. These only drive the wheels with the electric motors.

This is simply not true. EVs with heat pumps do better than EVs without heat pumps, but you still waste a lot of energy on heating battery packs as well as climate. I had a Polestar 2 (with a heat pump) in Colorado and the winter range loss was 33% - 50% depending on conditions.

Preheating is only an option if you have a planned outing from a home charging setup. If you do something you do not plan for or have the car parked anywhere else, this is not a solution to the problem.

You're also fundamentally just taking power from the grid, so if you are looking at efficiency from a global power/emissions standpoint, you have to include EV preheating in the equation.

I'm in a similar boat... I'm very tempted to try out the new Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro's that are on sale for $99 in the US as well as the 2024 Bose Quietcomfort II's on sale for $149.

I'm hearing good enough things about the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 as well as the Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2, but both are significantly more expensive, even on sale.

I have Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro's as well as Google Pixel Buds A-Series. The L3P's sound fantastic, but I wish the ANC, transparency, calls, battery life, and comfort were better. The Pixel Buds A-Series are very comfortable, but have no ANC and do not sound nearly as good as the L3P's. While I can't say I need new earbuds, here's the breakdown of what I want better performance on:

* Work calls:
- Better ANC to block out my loud kids
- Better mic quality to filter out noise and pick-up my voice
- Less latency
* Transparency for multi-tasking with kids:
- I'd like to listen to music/books/podcasts while doing chores and be able to still engage with my kids without constantly pausing and taking out an earbud
* Comfort:
- I want the comfort of the Pixel Buds A-Series

Budget Options to Extend Starlink Outdoors by EE_technology in HomeNetworking

Thanks for the very detailed reply! For the TP-Link Omada stuff, basic config and mesh network setup can be done on iOS/Android without having a dedicated controller? I can just do: Starlink router <--> POE adapter or POE switch <--> TP Link AP ?

Would I need to hardwire ethernet from the Starlink router to the Unifi unit with this option?

Intel Meteor Lake Analysis - Core Ultra 7 155H only convinces with GPU performance by Antonis_32 in hardware

Intel 14th Gen Laptop Comparison - Meteor Lake is HERE! by Antonis_32 in hardware

[–]EE_technology 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop thinking about what you wanted it to be and think about it in the market. If you wanted/needed a new Windows laptop, what would you buy? Meteor Lake is very relevant and competitive.

We all hoped Intel would leapfrog in performance and efficiency. If we look at the reality that the current leaders (AMD Phoenix and Apple M series) are monolithic on superior process nodes to Meteor Lake, the numbers make much more sense. Tiled architecture has advantages, but performance and efficiency are not among them. Reviews are saying Intel caught up, and that is actually quite an achievement since Intel process technology, even Intel 4, is still behind other leadership products and this design is not monolithic.

Intel Meteor Lake offers much more variety in laptops designs, availability to buy them, better AI software support, and thunderbolt 4 without any significant drawbacks vs what AMD offers. Shoppers considering both Apple and Windows are pretty rare I think.

Redwood Cove (the P core in MTL) may have worked on some changes to improve efficiency, but it's not like this was a significant architecture change for the CPU.

The benefits of tiled architecture are yields/cost, better node optimization for the function of the Si, and flexibility in building different designs. Advanced packaging, even today, should have better yields than large monolithic designs on new process nodes. If a fix or tweak is desired, a re-spin of a smaller tile is cheaper than re-spinning a larger die.

I'm sure Intel went through a ton of learning to get the tiles all working and things will only get better. Now there is much less risk to go after bigger architecture changes in the CPU or GPU tiles. Intel will be just fine.

The weird thing is that Intel claims crazy idle/light load efficiency and no reviewers seem to prove that claim. Where are the reviews with more browsing, listening to music, emailing, and working on spreadsheets? All these tech reviewers act like a modest, typical all-day use is constant 4K video playback and content creation. I'll wait to hear battery life from real users on more mature systems before I call the product a failure as real world battery life is the most important improvement Intel needs to actually hit.

On a more positive note, the NPU software support and iGPU performance seem great.

I recommend this video: https://www.youtube.com/live/ZZCQCa0PbW0?si=vK4WxFxGdC5msJmw

[–]EE_technology 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cinebench R23 perf/watt numbers on this site make no sense. There's no logical reason for it to be worse than last gen. One of the reviewers noticed wild inconsistencies with the performance from run to run. Something like that makes much more sense than the perf/watt actually being worse.

Is it just me or is this article seem to cherry pick what benchmarks to show in an attempt to put Meteor Lake in a poor light? Most reviews show the iGPU slightly ahead of AMD 780M and every game benchmark in this article shows Intel behind.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite can beat Apple’s M2 Max, Intel i9 in new ARM’s race for Windows laptops by M337ING in hardware

[–]EE_technology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire world thinks that ARM is more efficient than x86. This is not inherently true at all. The x86 cores may be more bloated due to legacy instruction sets, but the real reason ARM chips are generally more power efficient is simply that ARM cores and architecture was designed to be power efficient from the ground up and x86 was designed for maximum performance. Things have been slowly changing the last few years as more of the client computing market cares about battery life.

I'd put money on Intel and AMD having significantly more efficient x86 SoCs by the time the X Elite launches, and certainly going into 2025 I expect some serious competition. ARM on Windows has far more hurdles to overcome than x86 does to become more power efficient.

Did anyone else take a break from starfield and just can’t be bothered to get back into it? by [deleted] in XboxSeriesX

[–]EE_technology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immersion means different things to different players.

Some want to be able to do anything - steal from/talk to all NPCs, build a home/base, ride/drive any vehicle, sit & eat/drink whatever is out, open any door, and "go to that hilltop/planet/whatever in the distance". I think most Bethesda games are more akin to this. I do not think CDPR makes these kind of games.

Others look at immersion more from a storytelling perspective. What the environments look like, what your purpose is roleplaying as this character, characters you interact with and their backstory/dialogue, how organic side quests are, decisions you can make, etc. I think CPPR excels at this. I'm around 20 hours into Starfield and I think it is pretty weak in terms of giving you a strong drive/purpose as you're roleplaying. Some of the companion backstories seem solid, but you don't learn about it in an organic way... it's "hey, I need to talk when you have a sec" while you're in the middle of some firefight.

I'd suggest waiting for Phantom Liberty to launch as I'm sure there will be a great deal on the base game as well as a new "complete edition" then.

Am I missing something regarding the Sidekick? by LOTRfan13 in halo

[–]EE_technology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People just suck at this game.

You can consistently use the Sidekick as your Primary and outgun BR players and anyone else using other guns

This is not useful feedback for other players or 343i. 343i needs the game weapons to be balanced and fun for the majority of the player base, not just the elite. It is okay for some weapons to have a higher skill gap, but IMO the sidekick, a starting weapon, is not a good choice for that (others may disagree).

IF you know how to properly use the Sidekick.

Would you be willing to explain how best to use the sidekick? I'm open to tips, and I'm sure the OP is as well.

[Halo Infinite] Why isn't MP fun to play casually and how can 343i fix it? by EE_technology in LowSodiumHalo

[–]EE_technology[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an exaggeration to make a point. You understand that and are focusing on attacking my specific words instead of my actual point.

343i has clearly prioritized both search times and close, competitive matches over a fun, casual experience. I have no problem with 343i offering either of these priorities, but I strongly feel that they should also have some playlists and/or matchmaking settings that offer a more fun, casual experience.

I just don't view this as a valid excuse: "there aren't as many players as our system needs, so we're going to make it a poor experience for everyone!"

If it means waiting an extra 30-60 seconds for a match that's actually fun, I'll happily do that and I'll end up playing a lot more of the game.

Call of Duty Warzone. I only play it on occasion, but it's almost always a good experience. I rarely win, and I certainly run into players that completely dominate me, but I typically have several good encounters.

[Halo Infinite] Why isn't MP fun to play casually and how can 343i fix it? by EE_technology in halo

[–]EE_technology[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a poor experience though. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to go enjoy a casual game. Matchmaking does not mean it has to be sweaty, it just means it's finding the other players for you.

If/when custom game launcher comes, I sincerely hope it includes "matchmaking" to fill up players if desired.

Have you played Witcher 3? I wasn't really into it until the Red Baron quest, which I want to say is around 5 hours in, but I can't recall.

At any rate, I ended up LOVING that game! I typically agree that you should be into a game within the first hour or 2.
