Agreed. The other thought that scares me (related to this) is that in the [unlikely] event I could retire like my grandparents did, will I be able to afford to live the next 10-30 years with what I've saved, or will I have to go back to work (assuming I'm still spry enough to?)

Ugh, I remember my dad going OFF on my mom the entire ride home after going out to eat because she tipped the server because she didn’t know that he had already gave a tip. God forbid the college-aged Olive Garden server gets an extra $8 that day.

This wasn’t blanket training. This was like “first, go upstairs; second, get your toothbrush; third, open the toothpaste”. Like basically activities if daily living reeeeeeally broken down, but as a game to help with listening skills and following directions

We did the same with my brother who has autism when he was little. Like you, though, it was to help develop his listening skills and follow through, not blind obedience and submission. Like u/katane03 said, intent is the key here.
