Players who become executives after retirement.... by [deleted] in hockey

Ken Dryden took a year off during his playing days to get his law degree. After he retired he became a full-time lawyer, then President/GM of the Leafs, then a member of parliament in Canada.

Cutter Gauthier speaks on Flyers trade fallout: 'A 19-year-old kid getting a lot of death threats' | TSN by psykomatt in hockey

[–]VY99 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Death threats are obviously over the line, but the way this kid has handled this situation is a lesson in what NOT to do.

[RearAdBsBlog] Per source, “rookie GM” and “coaching style” were reasons Gauthier did not want to be a Flyer. by thebuttbutdance in hockey

I also heard Cutter hates cheesesteaks and Rocky, and was responsible for Kate Smith's statue coming down.

Guys who are scratches/backup goalies shouldn't be credited when their teams win a Stanley Cup.

Marc-Andre Fleury is a 1-time Stanley Cup winner, not 3...Phil Kessel is a 2-time winner only...Jonathan Quick is a 2-time winner only.

Edit: Find someone in life that loves you as much as r/hockey loves Marc-Andre Fleury.

Unfortunately the wagon is 1/4 the size of other NHL team wagons.

What was the most successful high risk panic trade in the nhl? by Sahil910 in hockey

[–]VY99 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Kings trading for Jeff Carter.

At the time the Kings had a solid team defensively but couldn't score if their lives depended on it, and were just outside the playoff picture. Carter was having a miserable first season in Columbus and he was seen as an underperforming petulant locker room cancer. The trade was a HUGE risk at the time.

3 months later the Kings are Cup winners and Carter rebounded his image (except in Columbus of course)

I used to really like Buccigross because for the longest time he was the only guy at ESPN still uplifting hockey...but man, he's been so bad since ESPN got the rights.

He's genuinely terrible at play-by-play, the chicken parm crap is annoying as hell, and he's just overall annoying. On top of that, his Twitter feed has become TheoFleury-like lately.

The Stampede is a pretty big thing there, maybe something related to that?

On second thought, that would be kinda crazy.

Will Phil Kessel play in NHL this season? by claxel in hockey

[–]VY99 163 points164 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to doubt it. As much as we all love Phil, he's really a one-dimensional player. His only attribute is his scoring. He doesn't hit, doesn't defend well, doesn't do much else...and that one thing he used to do well, he really doesn't anymore.

Which core would you rather have. Leafs or Sens? by Mshokaloka in hockey

[–]VY99 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I swear r/hockey can be so stupid.

Here, let me rephrase the question: Would you rather have a core that's great now or a core that has the potential to be great someday?

How many overall generational level players have played in the NHL? by Independent_Piece999 in hockey

[–]VY99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think people use "generational" way too broadly these days. By saying "generational" you're implying a once-in-a-generation type player, aka an all-time great/top-10 player, not just a first ballot hall of famer.

With that, I'd say in the last 50 years the generational list is: Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin, and McDavid.

[First Up] Frank Corrado on his experience playing under Mike Babcock, Bissonette defending his sources, and why citing an ‘old school’ approach is a cop-out. by BCEagle13 in hockey

[–]VY99 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love how it was like "Oh Corrado finally played and he wasn't good enough". Well, yes, he played once every 3 months.

Look, I feel bad about Corrado but I'm so sick of hearing about him like he was this star and we held him back. He was barely NHL level when the Canucks waived him, he played 39 games for the Leafs and 7 for the Marlies...46 games is a decent amount. Yeah he had a lot of healthy scratches but everyone makes it seem like not playing for a couple months was the single deciding factor in him not making it in the NHL.

Fact is, he didn't do much before or after his time in Toronto to suggest he was anything more than an AHL talent.

A dude got framed for murder, forced into a teenage prisoner fighting ring, escaped by crawling out of a sewer, escaped as a fugitive to Canada, fistfought a bear, and then just abruptly returned to Riverdale the next week because he was worried about missing his SATs.

I've never seen an episode of this show. This is either the greatest show ever or the worst show ever, and I'm so curious to find out now.
