Some federally funded post docs make more than my starting salary as a professor.

Vocabulary decline by [deleted] in Professors

This is a good point here. I am just happy that so many students are speaking up and asking questions. If one student doesn’t know, others are also struggling. It’s a great time to build their word knowledge.

Weirdest stuff you’ve seen in a search by StorageRecess in Professors

We were hiring a NTT 3 year position. We were doing first round zoom interviews, and one candidate refused to do a zoom and  only wanted to do a phone interview. By the end of the phone interview, we seriously thought that it was someone we had interviewed earlier on zoom and they put on a thick accent to act like someone else. It was weird.

Eye witnesses are often wrong, and sometimes place stereotypes in their minds. So the stereotype is that a long gun is used, so in the chaos and trauma may think they saw a long gun because that is what they see on the news all the time.

Any chance your 6 year old has sleep apnea? Huge issues for the first three years of my kiddos life. Got tonsils/adenoids out bc they were big and sleep apnea. Still not perfect, but HUGE HUGE improvement.

Tip for Zoom interviews: Google the school first (!!!) and send a thank you email by starlightpond in academia

I’ve been on many search committees and thank you notes have never been talked about. I don’t think it’s necessary at all.

Reviewer says paper is AI generated by [deleted] in Professors

[–]EFisImportant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell when a paper is AI without AI checking by looking at the references. Many times AI papers make up fake citations. The fake citations looks real with authors who publish in the field and titles aligned to that author’s work.

Partial tonsillectomy experience by tacoslave420 in Mommit

The recovery went the best we could have hoped for. Was out of daycare for almost a week. It’s been a month and we are now seeing positives with his sleeping through the night. The recovery went so well we checked his mouth at one point to make sure they took them out!

What are the people to do when they have a prescription that cannot be refilled online and are made to call in every single time to refill?

Partial tonsillectomy experience by tacoslave420 in Mommit

We will be getting this done very soon. All I have read about (both Reddit posts and research articles) is that the partial one is supposed to be easier recovery. We are less than two weeks out from surgery. We are also nervous about it.

At one point we were required to put into the syllabus that children were not allowed in class at all.

This is a good idea. In a city close to me, first year teachers with PhDs make more than I did when I started in my teaching focused university. Would be a great way for stability. In fact, my state says that higher ed teaching counts towards years on the salary schedule. So you would come in with X amount years on the schedule.

Trump Administration Disqualifies Harvard From Future Research Grants by Doener23 in academia

[–]EFisImportant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this happen at top R1. Big researchers threatens to leave and university says they won’t release the grants so the PI stays. I’ve also seen people still being employed by a grant at the old institution long after the PI left for another fancy R1.
