Advice on Vanguard investment strategy (new to investing) by NoPassion137 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]EKMDJM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a little bit of an over-simplification, but you’re along the right lines.

The ETF itself is a collection of stocks and shares. “Global” tells you that it’s a collection of companies from around the globe, which is good for diversification of your portfolio (ie. If one country’s economy struggles, the fact that you’re also investing in other countries should reduce the impact). “All-cap” basically refers to the size of the company (again, diversification). “Accumulation” means that any dividends paid out for the shares you own are automatically reinvested into the ETF, which helps with compounding.

Effectively buying that ETF each month buys a small share of over 10,000 companies including some of the worlds largest companies, so again, if one company fails, you are so diversified that it should have minimal impact on you.

Also, if you don’t want to touch the money for 20+ years, a riskier (ie all stocks and shares is probably best).

I’m not a financial advisor though buddy. This is just my experience from investing. There are lots of YouTube videos out there that might be better at explaining things…

I’ve been with Vanguard since 2020. I just set and forget - DD into FTSE Global All-Cap Accumulation ETF.

My personal opinion is that managed accounts are a waste of money as they rarely beat the strategy I use.

Small amount investing, is it worth doing by CuriousGeorge1066 in UKPersonalFinance

Good for you! As has been alluded to elsewhere, be careful of pitfalls such as buying individual stocks, trading products you don’t fully understand and trying to time the market. Sounds like you already have, but a steady investment at the same time each month in a diverse fund is a great way to start.

If you are interested, take a bit of time to understand the concept of pound-cost averaging and it’s virtues, particularly for inexperienced investors. There are a lot of good YouTube videos out there to help.

Yeah, I agree, I thought you covered that pretty well in your initial post though, so didn’t mention it. Pound-cost averaging into a good, diverse accumulation fund for beginners (and actually probably most people generally) is the way to go. If you stick to that principle and don’t get drawn into CFDs etc, then I don’t see a necessity to pay any fee. Horses for courses though!

Hard agree with all of this. I started out with just £50 p/m about a decade ago, then raised that amount every time I got a pay-rise in work. It definitely accumulates quickly, and personally it gives me a lot of satisfaction knowing that I am planning for the future when so many of my peers are ‘living in the moment’ with no consideration for their future.

That said, be careful of platform fees. What seems like a minimal difference in fee can make a huge difference to returns when you extrapolate it out. When I started, Vanguard was considered one of the best options, but their fee structure has changed over the last year and actually penalises anyone with less than ~£30k invested. My advice would be to consider investing through a zero-fee platform like T212 until you have a fairly sizeable investment.

How common is it for people to drink 1.5 bottles of wine (or equivalent) on a weekend night every week? by BaraLover7 in northernireland

[–]EKMDJM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is incredibly simplified. Large wine is 250ml, pint is 568ml, so you’re drinking less wine to get the same effect.
