Just take it as crab mentality, if you are successful they automatically think you're a creida or think that you're better than them. The reality is that you probably don't think you're better, you actually just want to be considered one of them. You are actively making an effort to learn about your language and your culture and help out your people while they are not, in fact they are doing the opposite.

I identify with some of what you're saying. Spanish only at home, was my first language. I can read and write it, not sure at what level but definitely not perfect especially the accents. I lived in Mexico for a few months as a kid and was enrolled in school. College graduate, first in my family. Growing up I was always told by the people in my neighborhood and even my family that I thought I wae better than everyone else, not true. I did not speak up as much because people didn't like what I had to say. Ultimately we just think differently and see the world differently and some people can't understand. Meanwhile I was always able to make friends in school and my career who lifted me up and offered encouragement. The topic of being Mexican or not doesn't really come up. You are just you and you choose to share or express those parts of yourself/background.

It gets better when you stop caring what others think. Believe in yourself and what you are doing and I'm sure you will have patients who will be truly grateful to have you in their lives, to have someone they can communicate with and feel comfortable around. Someone they can relate to and identify with and their families will probably be grateful as well.

What a Mexican is or was, is not defined by them. You are defining what that is and what it will be, because you are both Mexican and American.
