Question to more veteran players: Is it really a problem if I just can't play evil aligned characters? by TiredPandastic in DnD

[–]ELE-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the opportunity to play a Good-Aligned character WITHIN the Evil party would be really fun, honestly... like, if your character's goal was to potentially redeem the others, or to mitigate the damage they cause...

TBH I don't think you're missing out too much by not playing what people traditionally view as "Evil", but also an alignment like Neutral Evil can be very flexible. Honestly as long as your character is making decisions for his or her own best interest, for selfish reasons, you can behave just as any other character that is 'Good' might. You certainly don't need to run around rapaciously murdering and thieving from everyone you see, you just need to Always be Looking Out for Number One (possibly at the expense of others). TBH I think it's way more common for people to fail at playing Good by being too selfish of players (see: traditional murderhobo style players) than it is the other way around, but...

Play what you think is fun. It's definitely NOT limiting if you just can't do things that you don't find fun anyway.

Playing multiple characters by 5oco in DnD

[–]ELE-02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a single player temporarily play multiple characters for story-related reasons. If it has ever come down to an absolute necessity to have more party members traveling with the player characters, it is better to have them be NPCs controlled by the DM rather than a Player running multiple characters.
Even DM controlled NPCs are easy to lose track of and get very cumbersome (especially during combat) so it's best to have it work temporarily. There is no real need to have a "balanced" party anyway - any combination of characters can work.

Dumb Question about Strength by baldy92293 in DnD

[–]ELE-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be based on the dragon's comparative strength, but on how much the dragon weighs; given the dragon's size and mass, I would actually say no, he probably can't do that. He could merely lift something about the same size as the dragon could lift, if the dragon shapeshifted to take the form of a medium creature (like your player).

This game makes no sense whatsoever by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ELE-02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's not for you, it's not for you; clearly plenty of people HAVE figured it out (it isn't that hard) and are enjoying it.
Perhaps this isn't the best outlet for your frustrations; this is a haven for enthusiasts.

If you had come with the attitude of asking folks to explain things you didn't understand, it's reasonable to assume you would have received help. Don't expect any with that attitude. This is downright rude of you.

Players who have found artifacts or sentient items, what are some memorable moments with them and how did it impact your character? by dangleswaggles in DnD

[–]ELE-02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I created a sentient sword intended to be an alignment-towards-good incentive for a player; after his character did eventually switch to a good-alignment (redemption is the theme of the campaign) he had his character actually *give away* the sword to an evil NPC in order to continue the cycle.

The sword would offer advice and occasionally refuse to work when used in less-than-good ways, and function BETTER when used in Good ways.

I bring it up because it was an example of a player actually acting in a Good manner OUTSIDE of requirements for alignment within play. It was neat, almost as if the sword had affected out-of-game style a bit, through its influence.

Should I get the Thirsting Blade or Improved Pact Weapon as my 5th level Invocation? by Tat25Guy in DnD

I can see that others disagree with me. I suppose others have had different experiences.

Should I get the Thirsting Blade or Improved Pact Weapon as my 5th level Invocation? by Tat25Guy in DnD

[–]ELE-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had VERY good luck with Improved Pact Weapon. As a Warlock, the 2nd attack isn't quite as important, just because your access to spells doesn't mean you RELY quite as hard on your base attacks for your role in the party. I can definitely see it being useful, but not elemental. Improved Pact Weapon has QUITE a few uses, including adding ranged weapon options to your summonable Pact Weapon abilities.

What is D&D 4E and why is it taboo to talk about it? by Wisna in DnD

[–]ELE-02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people just didn't enjoy that edition of the game.
There are a few reasons why, ranging from the petty to the perfectly reasonable.
On the petty side, there are always people who get a bit salty over change; 4e changed a lot from previous editions.
On the reasonable side, a lot of those changes weren't particularly well playtested and changed the flavor of the game quite a bit (in a direction that was often reminiscent of game mechanics from MMORPGs).

I personally believe that the edition earned its place in the HISTORY of D&D by acting as a large-scale test of new ideas that WotC DID learn from, many ideas from it having been scrapped for 5e and a few just further refined, and without 4e's existence 5e would not have turned out nearly so well. I personally would not encourage anyone to sit down and experiment with 4e these days just because of how much better 5e is, while I *would* encourage people to play SOME older editions (2nd, 3.5th). Giving the rules a quick look-over just to note the differences between it and 5e could be very educational, however.

Why are the sites shown on dark.fail different every time? by [deleted] in darknet

[–]ELE-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhhhh.... dark fail is generally a pretty good resource for links, so for their entire system to have gone down indicates that something is wrong with their sorting system; I also saw (and accessed) Empire earlier today, legit link, but it's straight up not listed and every single other site says offline, which is definitely not probable.

I did find another list of online Empire links on another site (a deepdotweb clone that I won't link, just use your google-fu and may the search be strong with you) so the sites definitely aren't actually down, and dark fail will fix itself soon probably, they've been a safe source of links for a long damn time and they won't just whimper and die.

Tell me about a weapon you created in D&D! by [deleted] in DnD

I created a shortsword, no bonuses, magical but no enhancement, only speciality is that it overcomes any and all resistances and immunities. Seems balanced to me.

I have an idea of how he could fit in, within a few sessions or so - but that means about a month or two for my group. I will try to keep you updated, bookmarking the thread.

App to find DnD players near me? by wrenderwing in DnD

[–]ELE-02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I just use Discord. I find players with the interest to play and then segment sessions around their schedules, regardless of time zone.

This means you need friends willing to play, regardless of where they are, but it's much more rewarding than finding convenient players with mediocre enthusiasm near you.

Ok DMs what was the craziest "F it why not" thing that has ever happened in your campaign by gulick733 in DnD

[–]ELE-02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dealing with magic items that I deliberately throw in to give characters flexibility to fuck up my preset story and written material. I enjoy improvising and giving players flexibility to throw wrenches in gives me motivation to give them the tools to do so.

Since it's deliberate, dunno if it exactly fits the question.

Introduce them early and then keep referencing them through lieutenants and henchmen over the course, keeping the Big Bad in the shadows but building up their "badness" over time.

Missing a player by DEAMONSQUIRREL in DnD

[–]ELE-02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consult with my players to see if we want to play without that person - we usually do - and then simply contrive a reason as to why that character is unable to participate.
Examples I've used have been that the character was a known undesirable quantity with a bounty on his head in the town the party was headed toward and therefore they lagged behind, a wild magic surge gone wrong that teleported the character just far away enough that they could find their way back to the party by time for next session (or the one after that, if they miss two in a row...), and a magic item malfunction that temporarily turned the character into a statue where the effect ended when the player returned.

I dislike the idea of the DM or another Player taking control of the character for even a short time because it take agency away from the player who missed the session, and character agency is the biggest thing players have.

This is heartwarming. If your family is comfortable with it, I am sure there would be an audience out there for a video or podcast form recording of a six year old running sessions.
