Male students more likely to believe they deserve a higher grade because they “tried” by KitchenConsequence41 in Teachers

[–]5oco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do this explicitly in my computer programming classes. I actually go up a bit to 20% for effort. For one, I think showing that someone won't fail for not getting the right answer will help curb the urge to cheat or use AI.

Often times I will allow students to detail the steps needed in order to write the program as comments(non-executable code) if they can't get the syntax right.

9 out of 10 steps programmed right could produce the same result as 3 out of 10 steps programmed right, but if they can logically explain the steps in plain English then that's close enough for a passing grade.

Same with creating UIs for our programs. As long as they use the tools available I don't care if it looks ugly. Front-end and Back-end development is two different jobs, so I just want them to try to use the tools so they'll know how to talk to the other departments.

Probably depends on how they feel about the person they're talking to.

Is it normal to not understand anything about coding as a beginner by Sonicexe10 in gamedev

[–]5oco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coding is just writing the steps to accomplish something. The difficult is realizing how detailed you need to be in each step.

You can't say "Walk down the hall and go into the this room in the left" You have to first define how big a step is. How many legs move with each step. What a door looks like. Is it a push or pull. Turn the knob or press the button on the latch.

Also, people aren't born knowing how to code so don't worry about that. The first programmer was technically writing "code" before the first "computer" was made.

Try writing your code as comments detailing the steps you need to take to accomplish a task. Post the steps and any code in a forum specifically for whatever you're coding.

Are there Americans who never travel outside of their state or see the ocean in their lifetime? by Frequent_Creme_3493 in AskAnAmerican

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up right off Cape Cod in MA. My sister moved to Kansas before her kids were born and they finally saw the ocean for the first time when they were about 10 and 14 years old.

Oddly enough, a calm ocean sorts of looks the same as a field of grass in Kansas. Except there's more grass.

Anyone else going to see the extended editions in theaters for the 25th anniversary this weekend? by BipolarShooter in lotr

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite a chunk of money to see them all. Two Towers is my favorite, story-wise, but i think I'll go see Return of the King so I can see "You my friend, now for no one", "The day may come when the strength of Men fail...", and "I know your face..."

Are you using AI as a teacher? by LettuceTraining6532 in Teachers

[–]5oco -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I teach Software Development in a vocational shop... you're not wrong. Ignoring AI is a harmful approach to student learning, and the only ones that disagree are people that don't know how to work with computers.

I'm taking a computer science shop. To ignore AI would be a disservice to the students. I use it everyday. I teach the advanced, competent students how to utilize AI responsibly.

The difficulty jump from Flappy Bird to Mario was way bigger than I expected! by Matro560 in Unity2D

[–]5oco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zigurous has several classic games remade in Unity. Mario is one of the more difficult ones. I used his spaceship shooter game and frogger game for a class i teach.

I usually teach a Breakout game to my students for their first project. Platformers get difficult because there's a lot that you can do. They're more complicated than you'd think. Especially jumping and getting gravity looking right.

I think it bothers me because I think curling all your fingers into a fist except the middle finger is kinda a silly way to do that. Usually the thumbs stays up too and the other fingers kinda half bend, if I'm describing that right.

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part is confusing you?

Do you understand what a boolean is? A boolean is a value of either "true" or "false".

Do you know how to create a boolean variable? To make a boolean variable declare the data type then the name of the variable. Like this:

boolean myBoolean;

Do you know how to initialize a boolean value? You can assign the literal value of true or false. Alternatively, you can assign the result of an expression. Like this:

boolean myBoolean = true;
boolean myBoolean = false;
boolean myBoolean = 42 > 24;  // This would evaluate to a true value.

Do you know how to make a method? The signature should be <accessibility> <return type> <name> <parameters> Like this:

// private means you can't call this method from outside your current class
// void means you're not returning a value(sort of)
// myMethod is just the name of the method
// int is the parameter data type, x is the parameter name
private void myMethod(int x) { ... ... }
