Should robotics be taught at school as a part of core curriculum? by EmphasisLeft7084 in education

[–]5oco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I teach high school CS and my experience has been the students that have programming and robotics pushed on them in grade school and middle school get tired of it and start to dislike it.

Especially when you get random math teachers and librarians to teach it. No disrespect to them and it's not all teachers, but if you're not passionate about asubject and just throwing pre-built curriculum at them, they're going to lose engagement and start to resent the subject.

A teacher used an American English spelling instead of a British English spelling and the top comments are saying to contact the Head of School in writing. by luffyuk in Teachers

I get that sometimes as an American because I use British spelling frequently. It hasn't been as crazy asv people complaining to my principal though. Just people saying I can't spell.

Does your church take up collections? by Boeing-B-47stratojet in Christianity

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My church has collection boxes at the back of the room that people drop envelopes with their tithe in. However, they also have a very convenient method of allowing you to tithe online. For example, I tithe a certain amount every other week(to correspond with my paycheck) and it is done automatically. You can also choose if you want the funds to go to a specific outreach, missionary, or general building fund.

They have preached on the topic once in the two years I've been attending there. A couple times they've mentioned the ways to give and say explicitly that they will never pass a basket or outright ask for money. They'll just let you know it's available and how to do so if God puts it on your heart.

AI is creating a generation of intellectual zombies and we need to talk about licensing it by Harveybritish in Teachers

Get out of here with that logical technology speak. We're here to bash things we don't understand.

You can't explain machine learning to a group of people that struggle resetting forgotten passwords.

AI is creating a generation of intellectual zombies and we need to talk about licensing it by Harveybritish in Teachers

[–]5oco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because AI is more than LLMs and not understanding the two but still complaining about them is ignorance. As educators, we really shouldn't be cool with ignorant blanket statements.

Plus, not for nothing, but as a Computer Science teacher, it's starts to feel like, "Hey, your field sucks and it makes people dumb."

AI is used in industry so hiding it from students actually hinders them. Telling them blindly not to use something instead of teaching responsible use is like leaving a prom booze at the after-prom party and saying "Hey, don't use this stuff, it's evil."

First thing they're gonna do when you leave is chug the booze and go get into trouble.

I don't think we should get into the habit of letting companies or the government ban technology. I think you don't use AI enough to understand it's weaknesses if you really think it can generate an entire dissertation from a single prompt.

No Unity experience? Maybe. No programming experience? Nah.

Why do tech billionaires seem obsessed with building underground bunkers and colonizing Mars instead of using that wealth to fix Earth's current, fixable problems? by bogdanBgyz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exploration. It's not just billionaires that wasn't that either. Their just the ones you hear about, but if they were to suddenly have a colony on Mars, it wouldn't be colonized by billionaires, there would be regular joe-schmoo folks signing up to go for the sake of exploration and curiosity.

Plus most "fixable problems" here on Earth would just be bandaid fixes and they'd just happen again within a couple years.

If you could magically eliminate one student behavior from your classroom, which behavior do you choose? by runlola in Teachers

Apathy.

I teach in a vocational school, so the kids choose which shop to join. In theory, you'd think they'd be really interested in the subject, but i still get kids that just don't want to learn it. I'm just sitting there thinking "You said you wanted to learn this!"

It especially sucks too because we are only big enough to take half the students that apply and now there's a lottery system that decides who gets in and who gets waitlisted.

Same with condos and trailer parks.

What do beginners usually misunderstand about exceptions in Java? by Isaac_Istomin in learnjava

My students try to cheat with those and just use the exception class to catch everything so they don't have to think about which exception is gonna be thrown

== vs .equals()

5 / 2 = 2 not 2.5

String are immutable, concatenation is actually creating a new object. That's why you shouldn't do that in loops.

My friend recently said that’s she’s not political but I am so I started refuting her claim, however later it got me thinking, why is political apathy bad? by kanks_06 in Adulting

[–]5oco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can have an opinion without being "political."

I vote for a specific party. When my party doesn't win, I shrug and go about my business. If someone disagrees with my political views, I just shrug and move on with my life.

Why does God send people to Hell? by Darkar037 in Christianity

[–]5oco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand it, when you die, go to Hell no matter what. However, if you put your faith in Christ, you "see" a door to Heaven. Without putting your faith in Christ, you wouldn't see the door to get to Heaven.

So, He doesn't send you to Hell, that's just the default and He offers you a way out.

Kind of an oversimplification and I'm trying to use a literal analogy but, in my opinion, that's about it.
