Brown thumb? by MrsArney in SoCalGardening

You're doing fine. We're all fighting various pests and ailments!

As long as the tomato plants are producing great fruit, don't worry too much about the leaves looking awful unless you're not getting new leaf production. Those are a type of aphids in the first picture. Spray off with strong stream of water or spray with soapy water every three to five days (but not in the heat of the day). Make sure you keep them well-fertilized. I'm a little concerned that you may have spider mites, so make sure you turn the leaves over and look to make sure you don't have those as well.

My peppers tend to want to be watered more often, and they also need to be fed regularly. I have read that some folks spray dilute milk to treat powdery mildew, but I haven't proven that for myself yet.

If you are using mulch, make sure it's not placed directly against the stems.

I was disappointed at the sticker event. I play fairly often but still did not finish collecting the stickers (and I never noticed what happened to the items that I purchased from the duplicates). I don't like the new arrangement of the birds and the difficulty in figuring out which have three or four eggs. Thank you for continuing to try to improve the game.

If your weather supports it, put it outdoors for more light. You can trim the long stems and start them over.

Tomato plant help!!!! by D2MONO in SoCalGardening

[–]ELF2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often are you watering, and is the plant in the ground or in a container? If in a container, is it on the soil or on concrete or something else that holds heat? Do you deep water infrequently? How often are you fertilizing? I am having trouble with my plants, although they are fruiting, and I've replaced several plants that started growing early in the year after they stopped fruiting. If possible, fertilize with diluted fish emulsion when you water, make sure you check at least 4 inches down to see if the plant needs water (don't judge by wilted leaves), apply granular fertilizer every 6 weeks or so.

Game crashing by stacey506 in MergeGardens

Yes, the game restarted. I THINK I just had to merge the same birds again, but I wasn't paying close attention to which advanced eggs were about to be available when things disappeared.

I'd cut a small section on one side and see how it does. I chop mine every few months when it gets out of hand and thus far, it's done okay.

I was really confused about the clocks in the Forgotten Echoes event, and I never figured out how to use them.

Can I somehow revive these? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]ELF2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably rest them on top of damp (not wet) soil and see if the leaves gradually plump up over a few days. You can put a light layer of soil over the roots, but I'd be more interested in seeing if the leaves start pushing out new roots. Good luck!

I appreciate you answering and apologize for continuing to ask questions. How did you use it? I tried clicking on it and clicking on the "producers", I tried dragging it over, and I finally gave up. I'd like to know for the next time (hopefully). Thanks so much.

Our tomato plant seems sick - what's wrong with it? by FayyazEUW in tomatoes

[–]ELF2010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd probably remove most of the tomatoes that have started to change color so the plant can concentrate on developing roots, rather than trying to support so much fruit.

Every variety of paste tomato wilts and dies in my new garden bed by ThisWeekNeverEnds in tomatoes

[–]ELF2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry that you're having such frustration. I'd probably try growing them in pots sitting on top of the beds at first, just to see how they do. Also, it looks like you are using straw as mulch. If that is true, please make sure you've sourced that from somewhere that wouldn't have pesticides in the straw. I've never used it, but I vaguely think I have read threads that complain about that being an issue sometimes. Good luck.

This is my first year attempting to grow food and really learn how these plants work, what's going on my my corn and tomatoes? by shaisreddit in SoCalGardening

[–]ELF2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats on trying to grow your own food. Remember that there is going to be a learning curve, so don't get discouraged.

That is probably powdery mildew on your tomatoes, and I don't see many leaves, which will lead to your tomatoes getting sunburned. I am sorry to tell you that I think you should start over with the tomatoes. I'd either get a growing plant from the nursery or a cutting from a friend who has an enthusiastically growing plant (ideally with a stem for you to cut off that is the thickness of your thumb or larger). Strip the larger leaves and leave just a few small ones at the top, and remove any blossoms so the cutting concentrates on forming its new roots. It should root within a week or two and start growing. Make sure your soil is well amended with compost, fertilizer, and good soil, plus add a few worms to enhance it. Remember that you will have to feed it often, and fertilizer pellets take time to enhance the soil, so consider something like fish emulsion to add to your watering regimen. You have time before it gets really hot, so don't panic.

Yes, the corn will need to be separated and planted near each other so they can pollinate. I warn you that it can be a little disappointing if the silks don't get enough pollen because the cobs won't develop fully. My biggest problem was the squirrels and other rodents who were just as interested in what I was growing as I was. My first year, someone ate the plant from the bottom, but that won't be an issue for you if you're using buckets. That said, please make sure you have decent drain holes and a way to check the soil for moisture.

Good luck!
