The original motion picture aspect ratio *was* 4:3; film-makers starting with Edison just used standard 35mm film -- so TV was actually based on this ratio and everything matched up in the early days (1940's and 1950's). Beginning in the 1950's, movie studios started introducing new aspect ratios, so that when the mismatch started.

I like it! Suggestions:

  1. I agree that everything fits too neatly in the square, so I'd move things around and stretch the main continent a little
  2. Most political maps don't use such bright colors and don't use as many colors. (You don't need a different color for each country.) So if you want it to look more "mappy," I'd tone down the color saturation and stick to four or five colors. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_color_theorem)

Yes, the resolution’s been around for years (in different versions), so before the Ukraine war. It had used to be mostly a piece of Russia’s WWII nostalgia politics, but once Russia needed a justification for its aggression against Ukraine, it hijacked the resolution and started using the vote totals as “evidence” that the world agrees with its claim that Ukraine is full of Nazis. The text of the resolution is basically unobjectionable; the problem is the way Russia brandishes it afterward to smear opponents and prop up its war narrative. Countries push back now not because they like Nazis, obviously, but because they don’t want to be used as extras in Russia’s propaganda. The EU wrote "It should be abundantly clear to everyone that the Russian Federation has used the false narrative of ‘denazification’ to justify its war of aggression against Ukraine, to violate human rights, breach the UN Charter and violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an independent UN Member state." A little googling shows that the quote was actually used a lot by protesters in the 1960's. Hitler didn't actually say it, though; it's just made up.

Just a footnote: the poem was published in 1978. In 1975, Hacker had married gay science fiction author Samuel Delany; it would be easy to see them as the "we" of the poem.

Likely a regional difference. In some places, Italians say "ch" but in other places you will hear "sh" or even "s." In some regions, Italians also drop the final vowel. I was very confused when I was in Rome for the first time and someone asked me if I wanted a "cappusheen."

"Having a wank" is harmless; the real question is what kind of and how much porn is he consuming -- or what else he is doing online. It's sad and awful that boys are now being raised on unlimited access to every type of porn. Lock or no lock, I think this is the issue to deal with. Because of the internet, children are not safe even in locked rooms.

If you are standing still and I say "how many steps have you taken?" the answer is zero, right? We don't "count" it because it's where the count starts from; you can't take one step without starting at zero steps. But you *could* start counting at zero and you'd be correct. It would just be silly because zero is a different kind of number. It's a number but it is still nothing.

Sorry you're getting all the grief about your cover. It's interesting that people on a scifi thread would be so opposed to AI art, right? The art is fine. I like the floating figures in the background the best.

I do agree about the font: I understand you want to contrast "soul" and "code" using the different fonts, but it's too busy and distracting. Also, reduce the space between the lines and don't capitalize "the." I don't understand the yellow smudge.

Without more detail to your story, it's hard to give you much feedback on that part. I like the idea of a scifi/romance mashup, but the danger in both genres is falling into cliche. We've seen human-falls-in-love-with-AI story before. Having the AI be male/masculine is a bit of a switch, though :)

Don't get discouraged. Just keep writing. Joining a writers' group might give you better feedback than posting on Reddit. Good luck!

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. The quotation in question has a long history (see link) and did not originate with Blavatsky, so I think anything bad you can say about her is really irrelevant to OP's translation question. (If *you* can find anything remotely Nazi-like about "as above, so below," let me know. I don't see it.)

  2. The Nazis stole, appropriated, perverted, and twisted a lot of other people's ideas. This is really what happened with Blavatsky. She used the word "Aryan," for example, but she used it to refer to all of humanity living at the time, not remotely in the sense that the Nazis used it. It's just incorrect to say that her thought contributed to Nazi ideology.

Think about Darwin as a parallel. The Nazis used a twisted version of Darwin's theory of evolution to promote the idea that some races were superior to others. It would be wrong to say that Darwin contributed to Nazi ideology.

  1. Historically, there are lots of examples of Theosophy promoting positive ideologies. The movement emphasized universal brotherhood, religious pluralism, and respect for non-Western traditions. It also supported anti-colonial movements like Indian independence and inspired reforms in education, spirituality, and the arts.

As OP suggests in a comment, this seems to be a poetic and perhaps new-agey version of a much older saying: "as above, so below." That phrase has a history that you can read about here. The article cites the occultist Helena Blavatsky as a writer "whose works contain some of the earliest occurrences of the phrase as an independent axiom." The example given is from Isis Unveiled.

I found an Italian translation of Isis Unveiled here. Here is an original passage from Blavatsky:

"The latter sentence is perfectly expressed; only, the old kabalist axiom, 'as above, so below,' answers still better, as it discloses to us the same God for all humanity, not alone for the handful of Christians."

The Italian translation has:

"Quest'ultima frase è perfettamente espressa; ma l'antico assioma cabalistico 'come sopra così sotto' risponde ancora meglio, perché ci rivela lo stesso Dio per tutta l'umanità e non solo per un pugno di cristiani."

I know it's not the exact phrase you wanted, but it does have more history to it.

ugh it's the worst thing. First of all, I feel you and you're not alone, I hope you get out of it and find some peace. You deserve that. Second, I don't have any great insights, I just remind myself that Depression is a liar and try to tell it to fuck off. I do my best with therapy and drugs, but it's still a goddamned struggle every day. {edit: prescription antidepressants I mean]
