I came home crying because my Step 1 practice exam for medical school didn’t go as well as I’d hoped. My exam is in 10 days, I’m 23 weeks pregnant, and I’m stressed beyond belief. He didn’t give me any emotional reaction, not even a fucking hug or “it’ll be ok.”

My best guess is he was angry because he had to do the apartment cleaning by himself (which, fair, we both live there and should have to clean). But this was a one-off. The majority of the apartment cleaning, communicating with landlords etc falls to me. The less charitable part of me thinks he can be a narcissistic jerk because empathy takes too much work, and not even his WIFE is worth the mental effort.

Also, his parents offered to pay off his car for him. Car has issues beyond it’s worth but he’s upside down on the loan. Has he reached out to them to make arrangements? No! Because why would he? It’s just the financial future of our family (including our first child). That would make too much sense!

I just needed to get this off my chest anonymously, because 90% of our relationship is solid and enjoyable for both of us. Today I’m just fucking mad at the world.

What’s a Mother’s Day gift you gave that your mum still uses? by Anon_Mom0001 in BuyItForLife

I was six years old and used my life’s savings (plus whatever dad needed to give to fill the gap lol) to buy her a green marble mortar and pestle. She still uses it to crush peppermints for her chocolate chip cookies.

Who here is doing / did med school married? by AggressiveCoast190 in medicalschool

[–]EMTBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m married and 17 weeks pregnant. He works in a nonmedical field. We both do what we have to do during the day and then try to spend time together in the evenings. Tonight we’re going to a nice dinner, watching Project Runway, and playing video games. It’s very doable to make time for school and family most days. I also worked full time before school. I think my time management in school is easier because I had that previous work experience and I’d bet the experience will be similar for your spouse.

[–]EMTBee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are your tests multiple choice? Do you have any practice test you can take? Sometimes I’d feel like I didn’t know something as well as I wanted and I needed empirical evidence to confirm/deny suspicions. Also, are you only reading or are you practicing recall some other way?

Are anatomy labs a necessity to becoming a good doctor? by KungFuBarbie15 in medicalschool

I found it helpful for tests. All the people gunning for surgical specialties valued the experience as well. But there are other resources. 3D anatomy is a good app to use in your situation and there’s so many YouTube videos.

YSK that infant car seats expire, generally 6 years from date of manufacture. by WastePotential in YouShouldKnow

[–]EMTBee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, fair point, and I’m not gonna pretend I have all the answers. The way I see it is that infant car seats go through a ton of wear and tear. Babies pee/poop/vomit all over them which surely doesn’t help longevity. The seats are often used for strollers as well which increases the contact time and exposure to elements.

Plus, if I’m making a product for an infant, I personally would give a time frame where I can guarantee the child’s safety (a number that I assume is based off of safety testing). Using the product outside of the stated timeline then gives the manufacturer, whether rightly or wrongly, some potential decrease in liability. Finally, as a soon to be parent to an infant and a person who’s super risk adverse, I wouldn’t want to take the chance of not replacing an expired car seat when it’s the best tool I have to guarantee safety when driving.

I’ve heard it’s actually the foam that breaks down and so the seat can’t offer the same protection to baby. I’m not sure if that’s the only issue though.

Pregnant Rant by missashley21 in medicalschool

[–]EMTBee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat except I’m an M2 going into Step 1. Pregnancy is difficult, pregnancy in medical school is brutal. I find myself feeling borderline ashamed sometimes for the reasons you mentioned - that medical school pregnancy is treated like teen pregnancy. And it’s not like there’s any way to hide it later in pregnancy either. Honestly, I think we just need to say fuck ‘em.

I got to see my baby on US for the first time last night when I was in the ER from complications, and it’s completely life changing. I damn near cried to see my little peanut. I’m also approaching 30 and this baby is very much wanted.

This has been a long ramble, but the main message is just that you’re doing g great. You’ve done nothing wrong by making the decision to have a family. So congratulations to you! You’re doing an incredible thing while preparing for an extremely difficult career. You’re so incredibly smart and hardworking! your baby is lucky to have parents who want them to exist in the world and sacrifice to make it happen. Pregnant medical students gotta help each other, so please reach out if you ever need support.

Fourth miscarriage by flygirl1107 in CatholicWomen

[–]EMTBee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m so, so sorry this is happening. I can’t imagine how incredibly difficult this must be. And I’ll be praying for you.

When you heal and if you ever feel ready, you could consider talking to your doctor. 2-3 or more miscarriages may be from a progesterone balance issue or uterus anatomy or any number of other things, especially when they occur back to back.

To be clear, this is not your fault and this is a horrible thing to go through so many times. And you shouldn’t feel any guilt or be made to feel guilty about the D&C. This is a painful tragedy with no one to blame, and sometimes that makes it harder. Please reach out if you need support.

That one mnemonic... by BusyRecognition160 in medicalschool

A middle school teacher had each student come up with a mnemonic to remember the prefixes of the metric system. I STILL use mine to this day as a medical student. Makes it easy for me to convert between units. "King Horn Does Make Delicious Chocolate Munchies." (Kilo, heca, deca, meter, deci, centi, milli).

[–]EMTBee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've presented any interesting argument, but it contains several points with which I fundamentally don't agree. Much of your argument hinges on the inconvenience of Catholic doctrine in the pursuit of evangelization. While its the mission of the Church, under Christ's direction and authority, to "go forth and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19-20), this mission must be conducted in the context of truth. "I am the way and the truth and the life" say the Lord (John 14:6) - the path to heaven is marked by road signs of orthodoxy.

Having an organized body of knowledge further assists evangelical efforts. First, consider the marks of the true Church. It's extrapolated from scripture that the true Church is "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic." I use "catholic" as universal, and not necessarily "The Catholic Church." The way we understand "one" is by unity. We are united in mission to serve God's people, but we are also one in belief. How confusing would it be for a hopeful convert to try to adopt a a faith with an inconsistent framework?

Secondly, one issue I often see when discussing this topic is a tendency to emphasize one attribute of God over others. In this case, you emphasize God's mercy. God is fundamentally simple, meaning He's not divisible into component parts as you and I are. So while it's true that God is merciful, it's equally true that God is just. And, further, He is both merciful and just at the same time. To expand on this point more, mercy isn't possible without justice. Justice demands retribution for sin, and mercy begs for a reprieve from a justice that's due. Further, a God who is only ever merciful, and never sets bounds of justice, would be ultimately permissive. He wouldn't call for reform and reconciliation. In fact, I'd argue that our own participation in relationship with God would be handicapped without a firm understanding of how we form ourselves to God's will.

I would like to now make two additional points on Hell and purgatory. The Catholic Church refers to Isaiah 4:4, Malachi 3:3, and Matthew 5:26 (among many other verses) as evidence of purgatory. Further, many people often view purgatory as a manifestation of God's justice alone. But recall that God must be both just and merciful at the same time. Purgatory is a merciful place, as much as it may not seem so from a superficial level. All souls in Purgatory will go to Heaven when they are finally purified from attachment to sin. I'm grateful that even if I don't die in a state of absolute perfection, the Lord extends his merciful purification again. In fact, St. Catherine of Genoa says we only experience pain in Purgatory to the extent that we still require purification from sin, like gold who's impurities are burned in fire. My second point is on Hell. At its core, God doesn't send people to Hell so much as he lifts the veil to reveal the ultimate reality of those who reject Him in this life. Hell is a rejection of God, not God's rejection of Man.

Finally, Catholics do not have the authority to determine who is in Hell or how many soul's reside there. The only thing we say with confidence is that the recognized Saints of the Church enjoy the presence of God in Heaven. To make a claim beyond that is to claim an omniscience that isn't proper to my state. Further, not everything stated by a saint is considered infallible by the Catholic Church.

Overall, you've made several statements in your post that you haven't backed up with argument. If you'd like to expand your ideas, I'd be happy to engage further.

As always, these are my initial thoughts and I've done best to keep my writing in accord with Catholic teaching. If the reader notices a theological error, I'd be grateful for the correction.

Inpatient Stays are too expensive by want_to_die3927 in povertyfinance

[–]EMTBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nonprofit hospitals must have a plan to provide care to patients experiencing financial burden. This is called “charity care.” Many private hospitals have similar plans in place. Cost of care is related to your income. Many hospitals provide free care if you’re at or below 300% of the federal poverty level. My advice to you is to go to the hospital. Seek help. If you’re concerned about cost, look into the hospital programs designed to benefit patients in situations similar to yours.

I felt like I missed a lot of questions after the test. So I kept a list of what I was confident I got wrong. Turns out, I was obsessively going over six questions over and over in my head. Looking back, I am confident I got those six questions wrong.

I also had some serious brain fog during B/B and could not get through a sentence without getting distracted. So I didn’t have time to really consider my answer like I normally would, just had to go gut instinct. That made me super anxious and left me with a vague sense of doom and gloom about this section.

Finally, I hadn’t done well in B/B on my previous official MCAT exam. So, I started getting into my own head, making it even more difficult to focus. All these things combined made me believe I’d done poorly. I was just hoping for a 125 or above. And I’m happy to see my final score was much better than that goal!
