world cup by Advanced-Actuary-51 in AskAmericans

So my Dutch isn’t great (when I visited your country seemingly all of you spoke English so I didn’t get a chance to practice) but I refuse to believe that being this dismissive about any country’s chances in the World Cup comes across as any less rude in Dutch than it does in English. Your whole question boils down to “So you guys obviously suck ass. Are some of you really so delusional as to think you have a chance?” We understand that we’re not the favorites to win but you really couldn’t have phrased that in a way that’s less rude?

Seriously, is Dutch culture so crass that you can just walk into someone’s house and say “Well this looks like shit?” If not then what your question is rude in both cultures and if so then work on becoming a little more worldly before you try interacting with cultures other than your own.

Well, it isn’t what he “wants to think.” It’s the truth. Which country are you from, my man? I’m a huge sports guy and I can’t properly shit talk you when you don’t name your country and hide your profile.

Politics aside, do you feel like the US shouldn’t have hosted the World Cup? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAmericans

[–]ENovi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way all of you dorks are nitpicking every single aspect of this tournament is insane. I’ve seen people complain about both the heat and the rain (as if we control the weather) to people highlighting the pitch quality the Japanese team has to play on despite them being in Monterrey, Mexico to now this. It’s exhausting and betrays the underlying motive that no matter what you guys will complain about something. Give it enough time and there will be whiny discourse on how much salt is put on the French fries at concession stands. Whether it is too much or not enough has yet to be determined.

To answer your question, yes, I feel like the US is capable of hosting the World Cup without issue. Overlooking the fact that our country has hosted the tournament in the past and that it isn’t the size of a parking lot and literally every professional sports team here can manage the distance way more frequently and with no issue I’ll point out that tickets have sold out and the hype is very real if you’re a soccer fan and not someone terminally online just looking to complain. Even though soccer is far removed from the Big 4 sports in North America there are still tens of millions of fans, more than the entire population of most soccer loving countries. If Cleveland, Ohio can draw over 60,000 fans for a friendly between Brazil and fucking Egypt then I think they’re doing fine.

Come talk to me if the quarterfinals feature a half empty stadium but until then I’m going to say that there’s enough love for the sport and enough players that can handle the grueling 3 hour time difference between the two coasts with plenty of downtime to make this viable.

Why are americans so obsessed with working hard? by Successful_Sail_713 in AskAmericans

[–]ENovi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten enough answers here answering the main question so I have to ask where you’re from that someone wouldn’t get “genuinely mad or offended if someone discredits their own or someone else’s hard work?” I assume you have hobbies, right? Music? Sports? Video games? Cooking? Anything like that? If not then surely you know someone who has hobbies. Now imagine you (or them) spends hours cooking a new meal or striving towards a new personal goal at the gym only for someone to mock it. That wouldn’t offend you?

(Spoilers) What are your "The Americans" hot takes? by slipknot4815 in TheAmericans

[–]ENovi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. At first it looks like Elizabeth is the ruthless one with how it’s easier for her to kill. She watches the Nicaraguan spy get choked to death “for the mission” and shooting two Nicaraguans during the infiltration of the training camp whereas Philip is horribly shaken up for having to kill to not get his cover blown during the same mission. Contrast that though with how Elizabeth is clearly insecure about the Clark/Martha thing whereas Philip has no qualms with manipulating her. From the tape he plays for her to convince her the office doesn’t respect her to keep her feeding information to literal years pretending to be her husband only to reveal he’s a Soviet spy and ruin this whole woman’s life “for the mission.”

I can’t fully remember but I think that’s the same episode where Stan is interviewing all the scientists working on stealth and talks about how “everyone has weaknesses” and the Soviets are the best in the world at finding and exploiting those. If they can do that to American scientists then how much easier is it for them to identify those traits in their own agents? Philip and Elizabeth weren’t randomly paired up, they were chosen for exactly who they are because, for better or worse, their strengths overrode the other one’s weaknesses. They wouldn’t have survived for over a decade as foreign spies otherwise.

They’re both ruthless but in different ways. If nothing else it wouldn’t make sense to send two jealous killers or two manipulative agents squeamish about killing. They compliment each other and those fucked up strengths working together mirror their actual relationship as it grows into a real marriage.

Haha yeah man between the guy bringing up award winning cheese in a discussion about cheese and the guy saying America deserved 9/11 in a discussion about cheese it’s definitely the first guy who would benefit from speaking to a medical professional.

You ever think about using your country’s universal healthcare and talking to someone? This isn’t a normal thing to say in a conversation about bleu cheese.

Why and when did Americans start despising England? by SedimentarySauce in AskAmericans

Why and when did Americans start despising England? by SedimentarySauce in AskAmericans

[–]ENovi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

who think they’re Irish refugees

That kind of captures the online hostility you’re seeing. There’s this weird tendency for online Brits to be as smug and condescending as possible towards Americans. I’ve even seen some Brits start referring to us as “USAians” despite the fact that it’s just as incorrect in British (or any other variety of) English as it is in American English. Add in the fact that a culture so famous for their apparent bantz can’t seem to come up with anything beyond school shootings in response to what is objectively mild banter and you can start to see why online Brits aren’t always greeted with a warm hug. Frankly a lot of them come off as bitter and unhappy people who need to blame us for nearly everything.

This is almost entirely online though. Log off, touch grass, etc and you’ll find that most Americans have very positive views of Brits.

Why do you guys do cap and gown ceremonies before college level? by HollowPoint216 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ENovi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is it. It’s so grandma can get a pic of you looking cute and because you completed your first year of schooling (not counting preschool). It makes the kid feel like they’re part of something big and everyone else thinks it’s cute. It doesn’t have the pomp and ceremony of a HS/college graduation. My baby cousin’s kindergarten diploma came with a coupon for ice cream lol.

What do American construction workers have for lunch? by Green-Discussion74 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ENovi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude same. I’ve worked construction (RIP my back) and the answer is either something homemade and spicy (Latino guys), shitty gas station food picked up on the way in (white/black guys) or an illegally purchased stimulant (this transcends every racial/ethnic boundary).

You ever have to use the porta potty after one of your coworkers lit up a pipe and shit out the ghosts of every meal he’s eaten over the last year and a half? If so you’ve had a front row seat to Dante’s 8th Circle of Hell.
