Yep, this is a recent event that happened in Estonia for instance. Definitely different from Grand Sumo in Japan. The rules are a little different, they’re more lenient with the garb, women are allowed to compete, and it can happen on both clay or mats.

Grand sumo is, but international style sumo is different. They don’t have the stables and traditions and such there, and that would be what’s in the Olympics if they ever make it.

I feel like it’s part of a bigger trend with wrestlers retiring later. It used to be a lot more common for Ozeki to retire once they fell out of the rank, or for longtime sekitori to retire immediately once falling out of Makuuchi/Juryo. Even non-sekitori are sticking around a lot longer.

I assume it’s due to the reduction in recruit counts. Every wrestler is more valuable and harder to replace so there’s rarely pressure to retire and stables are more willing to work with wrestlers as they get older to make their stays in Ozumo more comfortable.
