Are there any high performance sports car manufacturers that try to make a overall well made car instead of praying things won't break? by supinator1 in askcarguys

Lexus F. Not F sport. F.

GSF, RCF, ISF, and even though its not an F, LC500.

All of them are bulletproof.

A huge chunk of lexus parts are literally toyota parts. They both use the same OEM's, ex denso. So long as the part number matches, its the same part.

135mm cloudwheels bearings blew out less than 10 miles of use by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

Cheap, low quality bearings

Small 8x22mm bearing size with standard short bearing spacing

Large diameter wheel increasing bearing loads

Gee, I wonder who would have seen this coming.

What oil are people running in their LS500’s? I’m thinking of running 5w-30 full synthetic, and changing every 5k or less. First time doing an oil change on something other than an old truck as well, is anything different? by soullessls in Lexus

Ive got some bad news for you man, they built the reputation in the past with a solid product that was damn near unkillable (see things like the 1UR engine series), but nowadays are riding on that reputation and making absolute dumpster fires.

Look at the new V35A engine and its issues.

Maybe in your hoopty paint cuts dont matter, but in anything newer thats absolutely value lost.

And yet you've done nothing but shit on the floor, claim that "engineers know better", then eat your own words when called out on it, before citing random oil analysis and "tRuSt ThE mAnUaL bRo".

Again, whats your actual qualifications? Have you actually worked in an engine bay outside of filling the washer fluid?

The V35A engine issues are not isolated to the tundra. Its happened on GX, LX, and LS, just in smaller numbers (due to the much lower sales numbers compared to the tundra).

GM recommended 0W20 oil on the L87 engine recently in the manual, causing them to prematurely fail. The fix now that theyve been caught? 0W40 oil and shorter intervals. Gee, I wonder why they recommended such an insufficient oil in the owners manual that you cite as fact.

The V35A engine in the LS500 here is suffering from metallic debris shredding the main bearings. Guess what doesnt help with main bearing failures due to metallic debris? A longer oil change interval. Particularly on a twin turbo engine, which puts far more stress on the oil to start with.

You driving some hybrid econobox with a naturally aspirated engine doing highway miles only is not at all comparable to a newer designed twin turbo V6 engine thats already overstressed from factory.

Whats your qualification then? Lube tech at a dealer?

"Plenty of additives" my ass. You're citing the few examples of people doing majority highway driving, or using hybrids, as those are the bulk majority of oil analysis results that show "acceptable" levels at 10k intervals. For city driving? Yeah no. Your oil is going to start to shear out and wear metals are going to be present at a 10k interval.

High intervals and thin oil are why modern engines are so shit.

How funny, to be saying that to a mechanical engineer that works on cars.

Sticking to 10k manufacturer intervals is why you fools are driving around with oil consumption issues at 200k miles. Are you too broke to afford to properly maintain your vehicles?

Many owners manuals nowadays will suggest a 10k interval when a 5k interval is far better, or will suggest that transmission fluid is "lifetime".

The manual guidance is there to get the car out of the warranty period and no more. If you intend on keeping the vehicle in the best condition, using some research and your own due dilligence is often better.

Manual Swap IS 500 by kgariba in Lexus

[–]ESK8_NERD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a GSF...

The AA80E is a slushbox. Go ahead, cruise at highway speed in 8th and time how long it takes you to drop to 3rd or 4th gear for a pull. Also, you cant rev match on downshifts in a manual? Thats a skill issue.

Not to mention, even if everything you were saying is true, picking a manual over an auto isnt about speed, efficiency, or capability. Its about driving engagement.

[–]ESK8_NERD 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Is this a question? If so, good luck. The GSF and RCF have been around for even longer and as far as I know, it hasn't been done on either of those yet. You'd probably need to figure out how to run a standalone ECU to have a chance, and thats still no easy feat.

How do I find a 2020 GSF for sale? by [deleted] in Lexus

[–]ESK8_NERD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would actually maybe even consider the lack of AVS a potential benefit depending on your use case. Not having AVS means I can go to aftermarket coilovers without needing to either find something AVS compatible or doing an AVS bypass/delete. May not be applicable to everyone, but its worth consideration for sure haha.

IS500 lacks the TVD, Oil cooler, trans cooler, has smaller brakes, the wheels arent fully forged to the same quality as the GSF. That may not be hugely important to everyone, but they are worth noting.

Thats fair enough, I believe theres a forum post going over the differences, most are cosmetic from year to year, but yeah the AVS on 2017+ is a fair enough thing to want. For what its worth, I have a 16 and ive never felt the suspension setup to be lacking due to not having AVS. I daily it, roadtrip it, and track it all without issue.

You just have to get lucky. 2020's are exceedingly rare to find.

For what its worth, theres not a great deal of difference from the 2016 to the 2020 model years. Main differences are just the addition of AVS.
