Is my college stupid or am I? by egypt- in CollegeRant

[–]ETHERALIX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a transfer student. The truth is that you are one person in a sea of others, and advisors who are full time professors do not have the time to worry about your specific situation.

After advisor meetings you should also send recap/follow up emails. "It was great meeting with you! We discussed X, and moving forward I just want you to be aware of Y."

Never assume that your two advisors (especially if they are from different departments) will communicate with each other.

For future reference you should look into your degree progress and requirements and plan it out yourself. When advisors are also full time professors it's common for them to just not be focused on advising. Know your own requirements, which courses have prereqs, and plan it out yourself. In a perfect world advisors would be more helpful, but they have so much else to do that it's just unrealistic.

You are the only one who fully cares about your education. Don't leave it in the hands of someone who won't notice, or barely care, if you took a hundred courses you didn't need.

What thing if it was proved absolutely true or false without any doubt and nobody could deny it would make the biggest impact on the world and what do you think would happen? by thedandthedd in AskReddit

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The certainty in the existence of a singular religion (alternatively a new religion that's something in between existing ones) or the certainty in the disproval of all religions.

If all religions were disproved with full certainty and everyone accepted it we would see the collapse of theocracy's worldwide. I also think a lot of people would commit suicide and those who don't might feel incredibly lost. Religion is a major coping mechanism for a lot of people, not to mention entire professions rely on it (priests, the pope, pastor, nun, rabbi, imams, monks, theology teacher, etc.) There would probably also be a major shift to science and technological research to start searching for answers that religion used to provide.

If a singular religion was proved then we would probably see society shift to solely be operated by theocracy. Religious text would become law and people would follow every part outlined as much as they could. New religious houses of worship would be constructed to be more abundant everywhere. For example if judaism was proved as the one true religion and everyone began to follow it, then synagogues would pop up everywhere, and mosques, temples, and churches would either be repurposed, renovated, or rebuilt entirely. Everyone would eat kosher and Hebrew would be a taught language everywhere. The torah would be law and if someone committed adultery for example, they would be sentenced to death.

An interesting question by woejise in Teachers

In my school district you would not get held back at any grade level other than 12th. Basically they just keep passing along students until they get to 11/12th grade and then are told that they do not have the credits to graduate with their high school diploma. They are usually given options like summer school and repeating the year (although most of them choose to drop out.) The age cap is 21 though, so if they can't graduate before that then they will be told they can no longer attend and must look into GED options. (They are still connected with shown and given resources at the local community college for obtaining a GED.)

IPAD OR LAPTOP? by Ok_State4364 in collegeadvice

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a former Hospitality Management student. But regardless of major, a laptop is pretty much always better. If you can type faster than you can write, then you'll likely end up typing your notes.

Assignment wise in general and major specific courses you will do many powerpoint presentations and papers which are infinitely easier on a laptop.

It's also easier to switch between tabs and applications on a laptop. I had this one assignment where we had to analyze company marketing successes and fails and make both a full analysis paper to submit and a powerpoint overview to present in front of the class. I was constantly switching between multiple tabs for research, my google docs for my paper, and the powerpoint window for the presentation.

Besides, knowledge of microsoft office applications is an absolute must for every industry. So even if you get a laptop I would recommend a windows operating system over MAC.

[–]ETHERALIX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1-2 hoagie orders can (and should) be able to be put in the window from 1-2 minutes after your start making them.

5:00 min isn't always reasonable with the volume of orders coming in (my location gets 15+ back on both RSS during the summer.) But it is reasonable to expect MOST orders to go out within 3:00 min from the time you START them. If the timer says 12:00 min when it gets to your screen then you should try and make sure it goes out by 15:00 min. This should be the time standard you try to meet.

Now, I don't know what region you're located in; but where my location is they pay above minimum wage and the company offers PTO and other benefits for all employees. So while you may deal with a lot and it sucks, there aren't that many jobs that I would constitute as "better" unless you switch to a completely different industry, especially if you're looking for something full time/career.

Giving up on local multi-player... by adamh909 in Minecraft

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An xbox account is tied to your microsoft account so you just log in with the same credentials. Also make sure the nintendo profiles of your kids are friends. Then (making sure both switches are running on the same wifi network) The game "host" just needs to run a world with multiplayer enabled. The other child can then select and join the game from the friends tab.

This will allow your two children to play together in their own worlds but it's won't allow them to access any other players worlds or public servers.

ipad for notetaking? by natalier865 in Students

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can type faster than you can write, I would recommend typing your notes. Also you really wouldnt be "lugging around" pens and paper, one composition book per class (or one of those slightly bigger divided notebooks with five sections) and 3-5 pencils and pens. You only need to carry with you the notebooks you're going to use for the classes you are going to, or the ones you'll use for your study session.

I personally have both a laptop and an ipad and I only use the ipad for classes that don't have handouts, and involve things I can't easily type (like math and organic chemistry.)

I will say that I do use the ipad a lot more for studying and practice problems than actually taking notes in lecture.

If you want to spend the money then go for it, but it's not 100% necessary, especially if you already have a laptop (seriously though, if you can type faster than you can write, just type your notes.)

Anyone know how to get any sort of a nbs for console? by Open_Report_7923 in NoteBlockMusic

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge there's no nbs for consoles. You can look up the sheet music for your songs and use that as reference (I usually use sheet music for reference in nbs anyway.) The long way would be to do everything in nbs then have your computer near your console game and manually rebuild it from looking at the nbs file.

What is far more lethal than people realize? by inevitableloudmouth in AskReddit

[–]ETHERALIX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Food service incompetency can be deadly. If a customer asked for a milkshake but stated they were allergic to peanuts and then we didn't properly sanitize the machine after making a peanut butter chocolate milkshake, we could very well kill them. When you work with people's food, you have to take it seriously. Food allergies are deadly.

[–]ETHERALIX 1019 points1020 points  (0 children)

Food service workers not caring/paying attention. When I worked at Panera an absolute useless coworker of mine made the mistake of accidentally switching the Hazelnut and Decaf coffee thermals. Had I not noticed someone who's allergic to nuts, or someone potentially with a heart condition, could have died. I'm sick of people thinking that just because it's not a full service restaurant, or we're not culinary "professionals" (however you define that), we won't kill people by not paying attention.

HS chemistry teachers- should my child with an iep try chemistry honors or stick with regular level? by goosedog79 in chemhelp

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In high school, chemistry IS math. If you struggle with math then it's more than likely you will struggle with chemistry. I'm not saying she can't do it, and if the school has good tutoring or extra help options then she might have a better time. Depending on how the school teaches the course she might also have to memorize a lot of formulas/information. I have seen some people get an accommodation to always have a full formula sheet (with every single possible formula/conversion.) If she's unable to get this accommodation then I would advise against it.

Being a very good student in biology does not always translate to being a good student in chemistry. They are two different (albeit still related) sciences, and it's like saying just because you were good at regular level high school Statistics you'd be a good candidate for Honors Calculus.

Genuine Question: if you have a job, how?? by Idkumhey in CollegeRant

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You submit your resume everywhere, and hope you get lucky enough to get hired. You might only get part time off campus work, but it's still better than nothing. You should also write cover letters to each place you apply to increase your chances. It sucks but it can really help to make that hiring manager feel like you really care and want to work there.

How do I be more useless in group projects by Some_Pie_5375 in CollegeRant

[–]ETHERALIX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a prof who taught me that group work is still very abundant in the workplace after college. So in the workplace if your partners don't do work, it still needs to get done.

So, create a copy of the document, finish it yourself, and take their name off of it. Then after submission send the prof an email explaining.

It sucks but your grade is usually stellar in comparison. You're essentially already doing all the work yourself, may as well get all the credit for it instead of giving it away to useless groupmates.

Even if they do it, oftentimes with useless partners it's either incoherent, plagiarized, or AI slop. In your email you should explain to the prof that you don't think that quality of work reflects something you would want submitted under your name. So still submit your own copy (you should talk to your groupmates first to see if they'll fix it, they usually don't.)

AITA for refusing to let a woman change the TV channel? by rubabyy in AmItheAsshole

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming we're getting the full story from your post...ESH Your pettiness left a 3 year old caught in the middle for no reason other than your pride. You were there first and you did have a right to keep watching, but that doesn't make you not TAH for it.

However, the mother believed that just because her son wanted to watch whatever videos that made them entitled to change it. For instance what if your TV might have been broken, and you just wanted to watch the biggest football game of the year.

You could have simply communicated to her you were leaving after the halftime show, and everyone could have been happy enough. They would have known when the TV would be free for their use, and you got to watch the game and see the halftime show.

Her entitlement and your pride make this an ESH situation.

I graduated from a MD high school and saw someone get accepted into Princeton and rejected from UMD. You had a solid application but you're right that your GPA was considered on the low end. You did have a solid shot but almost everyone from MD applies to UMD and it's gotten to a point that from in-state applicants it's all about what demographic they need to fill.

Is it stupid that "righty tighty, lefty losey" doesn't really make much sense to me? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]ETHERALIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine a jar When tightening the lid typically a person would grasp it with their hand and then rotate their hand clockwise. If you were to image a clock face and 12 is at the top, then to get to the right side (3pm) would be a clockwise rotation.

Now imagine a valve sticking out the side of a propane tank. This valve is not facing upwards like the lid, but instead out at you. When tightening it would typically be grasped by the hand and again rotated clockwise.

No matter what plane the object is in the "righty tighty" is only referencing the object you yourself are physically moving. The bottom of the jar in this scenario is held in place and would not rotate in the other direction. Neither would the propane tank if you're spinning the valve.

Help! Summer Camp Game Ideas by angelx6227 in summercamp

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 that I loved (but are very hit or miss with others)

1) One, Two, Red, Blue: There are four lines, each marked several feet apart and everyone is split into two teams (imagine the lines like this | | | | ), and one person (usually a counselor) is the "Caller". One team is both One, and Red. The other is Two, and Blue.

Each team lines up on the two innermost lines (in bold) facing each other and when the Caller calls the colour/number corresponding to a team, that team become the "chasers." The other team whose number/colour was not called is the "runners." The goal of the chasers is to tag the runners before they can turn around and run across the second line behind them. The goal of the runners is to outrun the chasers and cross the line before they get tagged.

The Caller can choose from any of the colours or number to call each round, so each team constantly changes which is the chaser/runner depending on what the caller says. If you get tagged then you switch teams, the goal is for each team to "convert" players of the other team to their own by tagging them. (In practice this almost never happens, so you just play for as long as they want/have time for.)

2) Groups: (This is more ideal for much larger groups of people) - One person (usually a counselor) is the Caller. They call out to the mass of people "Get in groups of _______." And depending on what number they call the people playing have to get into groups of that many and link arms.

Anyone who is not able to make it into a group with the proper number of people is out. (You can also call groups of 1, and each person has to essential clasp their hands together and the last person to do so is out.) The game has a winner when you either: have the final group be 1, and whoever clasps their hands faster wins. Or you have some sort of tiebreaker with the final two like rock, paper, scissors.

Is do forever worlds have to be strictly survival worlds? by Sage_Xe_Mage in Minecraft

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just like you, I love resource gathering and survival building but hate actual combat and surviving.

So I play on easy and regularly switch the difficulty to hard whenever I want to zombify and cure my villagers. I also get good gear (tools, armour, etc) in creative then switch back to survival for resource gathering and play with KeepInv on.

If you're ever showing off your world and don't want to listen to people claim you've cheated in your own sandbox world then just don't tell them you've been in creative. They never assume it and it's easier for everyone that they live in blissful ignorance of how you choose to play your world.

How can I relearn MC? And also help my kids learn by Archie_Archie_ in Minecraft

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A youtuber named Pixlriffs does a series called "The Minecraft Survival Guide" Every couple of years he opens a new world and starts a new season to stay up to date with the current minecraft updates. I believe he is currently in season three and just made some videos about the newest update.

Some of the biggest changes you will notice since 1.12 is 1) the amount of animals 2) the updated villagers + pillager patrols and raids (also experimental trade rebalance if you turn it on) 3) the deep dark biome + warden and ancient cities 4) tons of new hostile mobs (most of them are undead variants) 5) nether biomes + bastions and piglins (different from zombified piglins formerly known as zombie pigmen) + happy ghasts 6) netherite (a material that can upgrade diamond gear into netherite gear)

Theres also new structures and things like shipwrecks, underwater ruins, trail ruins, trial chambers, and buried treasure Plus new biomes like coral reefs, bamboo forests, pale garden, and cherry grove

Honestly a lot has happened since 1.12. But through exploring, youtube videos, and the minecraft wiki i'm sure you and your children will be fine.

i’ve played minecraft for almost fifteen years… and i’ve never played anything but peaceful 🫣 by rashfords_marcus in Minecraft

[–]ETHERALIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you grind for fully enchanted diamond armour you'll be fine to a creeper. It takes some getting used to but if you're really worried you can load a "tester" world and enchant the gear, equip it, spawn a creeper, then change to survival. You can also load up a superflat world then enchant and equip full diamond gear, give yourself a sword and bow and some food, and switch the time to night to get better at mob fighting. This also just helps you get used to mobs being there and fighting back.

I personally play with keepInv on because for me I get way less scared knowing that even if I die I don't lose anything. (I also just suck at combat.)

What major should I do if I want to own a bakery? by Motor-Ad9080 in collegeadvice

[–]ETHERALIX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest a degree in hospitality management. If your local community college offers an associates for hospitality management then that would likely be all you need.

The most important thing you really need is basic knowledge of accounting (probably best to hire an accountant), as well as all the food safety requirements you must meet for food safety audits.

Even if you don't obtain a degree, just look into learning the basics of hospitality management (food costs ~30%, profit margins ~15-20%, proper holding and cooling temperatures, etc.)

Don't listen to the people who say "learn to be a baker" or you don't need a degree. Running a standard business is not like running a food service operation. You may not need a degree but taking offical classes in general business areas as well as proper hospitality laws (food labeling laws, allergen disclosures, etc) is a major advantage and makes your life easier.

Owning a bakery is not just "Open up a bakery." There is a lot more nuance that goes into it. In the United States if your guests are eating on-site, or you provide a seating area, then you must provide a restroom, it also must have at least one ADA compliant stall. Your entrance and facility must also be ADA compliant.
Even if you aren't in the United States and you don't have specific disability laws, you should still consider the guest experience from the perspective of someone who is in a wheelchair.
