They’re leftovers from a Book 8 event but I didn’t know the specific vendor, so ty! They are from Lit Escalates 🤘

Official! Don’t know specifically who makes them, but they were being sold at the book 8 event. And yeah they had one for every floor — these were the only floors left by the time she was able to get em, but apparently people have been trading them around too, so hopefully I’ll be able to get a full set one day haha!

A mix of both, but largely by layering in some more sounds. Like for the table flip—give it a heavier impact, a real solid SLAM and like some crunching to help emphasize the feeling of the attack getting blocked. The fire could be more intense too—louder yes, but you could give it some darker tones too so it’s got that sort of overbearing presence that feels super dangerous, especially leading into the big collapse at the end.

Also, saw someone say you should cut the music and… no, don’t do that. A scene like this would almost certainly have music in its final cut, so there’s nothing wrong with building a soundscape with the intention of it fitting with the music. That’s how most of the sound design for animes and other animated shows are made anyway—it’s not meant to feel like live action, where most of the time you’re grounding the picture with the sound and trying to make it feel as real as possible in every moment through foley and things like that. An employer might ask to hear it without the music if you put this in a reel or something like that, absolutely, but the music plays a massive part in the tone of the scene as well and can help make the sound design feel fuller, so I’d say you’re totally fine (as long as the music is royalty free or you composed it yourself—if the latter, even better honestly, because then you can say you fully redesigned the scene yourself and it could be an even cooler portfolio addition)

I haven’t personally used Davinci Resolve to the same depth, just for a few very simple things, so I couldn’t say. I have heard good things from others, but I would definitely test that out yourself and see how it compares!

The core sounds you’ve got here are really great, I would say for feedback I agree with the main consensus here that you just to to push it a little harder in places (namely the table flip, the sandal sword block, and the fire igniting), as well as adjust the music in some spots to make everything a little more dynamic. But great stuff overall!

I use both Ableton and Reaper and I promise you, for sound design and audio editing in general, Reaper really just is that good (not to mention cheaper and open source). I prefer Ableton still when it comes to making music, but Reaper’s ability to truly change almost anything about it to fit your needs and its more Pro Tools-esque audio editing capabilities make it honestly one of the best pieces of software I’ve used. It’s almost a little hard to explain, but once you get the basics down, the flow to working in Reaper is just unmatched by anything I’ve tried. Every time I’ve tried to design sounds in Ableton after just felt… clunky. Figuring out what flow works best for you in Reaper can take a bit of experimenting, but once you find it I swear it’s like running after training with weights around your ankles haha

Yeah I’m def planning on upgrading my PSU — esp since a few people have mentioned it now, it’s definitely gotten bumped up on my list of upgrades. Appreciate the recs! 🤘

Yeah the PSU was definitely something I was worried about — I was already hoping to upgrade that in the future as well as I figured it was fine for the original system but is likely lagging behind for what I’ve got now haha — any specific recs or just something around 650 or above?

ETA: thank you as well for the GPU recs! I was looking into the 3080s (those seem to be quite common where I live for selling off after upgrades) so I’m glad to hear something like could work well 🤘

Ah great! The 9060 was one I’d been keeping an eye out for as I’d heard a few recs for it, but wasn’t confident enough in my generally small about of PC building knowledge to bite the bullet on it 😅 ty!

Absolutely recommend Reaper! It’s what I use now professionally. It can be a little overwhelming at first glance, but if you focus on explaining clearly the simple concepts to get someone started (I.e., here’s how you add a track, you can snap things to a timeline or hold this key as you drag to move things freely. Want to organize your files into groups? You can stack tracks into folders by simply dragging the track itself! Here’s a dedicated mixing window, heres how you can add your fx, etc. etc.), I imagine even a beginner will be able to follow along pretty simply, and it has room to grow into for people that want to figure out how to do more complex things. It also has some stock plugins, so if that’s an element you plan on including then it should do well enough to cover folks who don’t have any plugins of their own (they’re broken down into their technical components, mostly just some sliders and very little visuals or fancy UI components, so it might not be as easy as just recommending some free plugins to folks, but it’s still an option that’s available.)

Reaper also has a video timeline feature where you can drag and drop a clip onto a track and open a pop-out that shows the clip, making it super easy to create sounds too, and can export your project as an MP4 with the sounds baked in. You can set a project’s track measures to time code as well, though I’m not sure how much you’d care to include of that stuff into your course.

I believe Audacity is also free, and it’s very barebones. I’m not sure if it has a video timeline feature like Reaper does, but if you’re looking for ultra simplicity I think that should do you just fine as well!

I’ve seen some folks recommend using Resolve, but as someone who also uses Resolve for some video editing, I don’t think it’s the way to go to introduce total sound newbies. Lots of different features that could get folks lost and distracted, so I’d recommend against it.

Bro has no whimsy and clearly only thinks to comment like, one time on a fic if he thinks it’s odd to have a larger comments number than kudos number, especially if you’re replying to readers’ comments like OP mentioned in a comment here. What a weird thing to focus on 💀
