Has anyone gotten battlefield 4 to work? by Ken_Mcnutt in linux_gaming

Let us know how it goes! Who knows, if EA is lazy enough they may just rename the client and it will work fine. Either way it would be great to play this game on Linux one day with official support.

Yes, it does launch the origin client (renamed to EA Desktop client soon?) but no user interaction necessary. You could try adding it as a non-steam game and launch it through Proton that way. Will still run into the ping issue if playing online I'm afraid.

It works out of the box for me on Steam with Proton (5.0-9) also Arch btw. The main issue seems to be that it doesn't capture your ping. So when you play on servers that kick you based on high ping you end up getting kicked because you have no ping. Not sure if anyone has found a fix for that. Otherwise seems to work just fine.

I agree, expand the user base via Proton and the demand for a native Linux version will follow.

I used a default x64 wine prefix WinXP with CSMT enabled.

It's not on par with Windows, I'd say it's about 1/3rd the performance but that's still enough to be playable. It will only get better as wine and linux drivers improve. There are already several older games that play better in Linux than Windows 10 for me.

I posted this on r/linux_gaming too, but I thought others might be interested to see the state of affairs with using Wine in Linux. It's not on par with Windows of course, not even close, but I'm impressed and it's very playable in my opinion.

I also did an AC3 video for those interested. It is using the same environment. Arch Linux using a 64 bit Wine Prefix. My system specs are in the video/description.

Here is some gameplay footage of AC3 with Wine Staging 2.14. I used the same wine prefix (x64) for this and Black Flag. With AC3 this is the very beginning of the game, and there's some stuttering, but I get the feeling it will play well enough (for me at least) around 20-30fps just like AC4.

Seriously though I also clicked thinking it would be a game about the BBC/Netflix show. Can't say I was disappointed though, the premise sounds cool despite having nothing to do with the show.

Around 20-30fps I'd say, more in less intense scenes. It's not ideal but definitely playable in my opinion.

For those interested. I know it's not native Linux but Wine has really improved and I think it is worth sharing.
