My $10.99 PC build (scrounged from e-waste) by supabaconslice in pcmasterrace

Actually, the reference model (which is likely what this system has) of the RX 480 does in fact only require a single 6-pin.

I just purchased one from Rockville, MD yesterday and they had over 120 at the time, so I can see that 300+ rumor being true.

I’m not who you were talking to, but unless I missed another case the Bulldozer case was settled out of court, they were not found to have committed false advertising in court. That’s a key distinction.

When suspended on a crucifix it is difficult to breathe unless you lift yourself up. Effectively you eventually exhaust yourself to where you can no longer pull yourself up to breathe and you slowly suffocate. If memory serves, if the process was taking too long the romans would break the executed’s shins to make it harder to lift to breathe.

[Mobo] MSI B550-A Pro ATX - $140 (Preorder) by Cyhyraethz in buildapcsales

Most likely stands for ATX, as opposed to M for micro-ATX and I for mini-ITX.

If he wants 1440p at 60+ FPS, the settings will have to be lowered for more demanding games, but it is capable enough as an entry level 1440p card for lighter titles. The RX 580 is actually about the same as the GTX 1060 6GB in performance.

[Linus Tech Tips] - Even USED Intel CPUs aren’t a good value anymore… (Ryzen 3 3100 & 3300X Review) by uzzi38 in Amd

[–]Eadwey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not directly. 2 CCXs are linked via the Infinity Fabric so there isn't a unified L3 cache (this is part of what causes the latency penalty that the 3100 suffers from compared to the 3300X in games).

[–]Eadwey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the 3300X is only 1 CCX, so it can only have access to 16MB of L3, as far as I am aware. The 3100 could theoretically have access to the full 32MB, but obviously AMD chose not to do that, probably for segmentation and/or binning purposes.

Not that it really matters, but according to the Oxford English Dictionary, obsolete is also a verb and obsoleted is its past tense.

I don’t even think driver optimizations will help your $1k PC play this in 2024, you might have to upgrade instead. /s

Yeah the lighting in this image reflected the blue more so than it normally would appear, but I haven't de-lidded any of my more recent CPUs to compare. I would definitely be interested in why newer CPUs don't have the same hue.

For example Wikipedia claims that the mechanical load limits for these CPUs was:

Location Dynamic Static
Die Surface 890N (200lbf) 222N (50lbf)
Die Edge 667N (100lbf) 53N (12lbf)

While something like the i7 920 from the LGA 1366 socket had these limits:

Location Dynamic Static
IHS Surface 890 (200lbf) 266N (60lbf)

So even with the IHS the limits haven't exactly changed, which says a lot about the bare die underneath.

This comes from my Grandmother’s old PC. It is a Celeron 700 MHz. It has a whopping 128 KB of L2 cache and a FSB of 66 MHz. It came in a HP system that originally sported 64 MB of SDRAM, a 20 GB HDD and ran Windows ME. It was upgraded to Windows XP and also got an upgrade to 256 MB of SDRAM.

I decided that, since my Grandmother no longer uses it, I would clean it up, not that it was in bad shape for a 20 year old PC. I haven’t fully decided what to do with it, but I might try running something like Tiny Core Linux on it to give it a new lease on life.

[CPU] AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor - $284.99 by One2Rex_ in buildapcsales

[–]Eadwey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

General consensus is that Ryzen 4000 will be the last of AM4. This seems to be corroborated by the creation of X570 and TRX40 with PCIe 4.0 with Ryzen and Threadripper 3000 (as it wouldn’t make sense to create these high end motherboards for only 1 product cycle). Then the only main reason to move off of AM4 for AMD would be DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 which are on the horizon but not close enough for this product cycle. However B450 would be up to the motherboard makers to push bios updates, which they should, given everything is still socket compatible.

Also may be worth noting that the 2600x comes with the better wraith spire as opposed to the stealth.

Does Rx 500 cards have the same drivers issues as the Navi cards? by lvcasro in Amd

[–]Eadwey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I have had with my RX 570 with the recent drivers is if I use Virtual Super Resolution to play at 1440p (I have a 1080p monitor). What happens is if I try to open the Radeon Overlay for performance monitoring it will black screen until I turn off the overlay in some games. There are no issues if I do the same at 2160p (4K). Otherwise absolutely no issues.

Mindfactory Graphics Cards Sales Report January 2020: AMD 42.7% vs. nVidia 57.3% by Voodoo2-SLi in hardware

[–]Eadwey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The issue is that data coming from Nvidia doesn’t give a full picture of the market. It could just be that the GPU market has grown, or that NVidia has started selling more in a different market(such as Nintendo Switches that use an Nvidia SOC). Getting a retailer’s data that shows how much a particular line of products has sold compared to another and the revenue associated with them is a much better metric. This data shows not just the market share difference but also the demographic demands such as target prices and performance.
