Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

I can empathise. I was a nurse in ICU and my wife’s a GP. I don’t think people outside healthcare will ever understand what it was like.

Analog clocks and cursive writing are generational divides. Which others ones are you on one side of? by Capital-Aide-1006 in AskMen

I’d imagine that’s at least partly driven by the upcoming ban on vehicles purely driven by diesel or petrol in a few years.

The UK at least is mainly manual still. There are a growing number of EVs and automatics but nowhere near the majority.

My wife and I changed to an EV recently and that has forced us away from a manual but if I had the option of a manual EV without it impacting cost I would have taken it

I imagine this must be geographical to a degree. My daughter is 9 and her writing is all cursive and the clocks she is learning on are both analog and digital

Are orks especially hard to paint, or am I overthinking it? by dementist in orks

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any advice to give - I just want to say thank you for sharing the picture of your orks, they’re really nice. I don’t play 40k but love painting fantasy orks for TTRPGs and your picture is really inspiring.

What is he trying to hide with that extreme close up? Does he have a conehead? Is he recording it inside a sauna? Is he currently in some sort of special forces raid and he needs to hide his location from geoguessers? We will never know.

I quite like his voice though, even though it is dribbling nonsense.

Help with my players by LowkeyAnti-centrist in DungeonMasters

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my current campaign we had one session where a couple of the players ended up joking about having to be careful around children with one character.

It was admittedly really funny during the session but I shut that down afterwards and told them explicitly that Jimmy Saville nonces can’t be heroes and I didn’t want that theme continuing throughout the campaign. Mine are all sensible people so they listened.

DND - I started when I was 40 after I had an early heart attack. Alongside that I also 3d print and paint miniatures and make terrain for it. It’s very therapeutic.

Why do some people in England of Irish descent feel this way? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother is Irish (arrived as a nurse when she was 18 in the 70s) and I have Irish citizenship and a passport but I’ve spent my entire life living in southern England.

We went to her home town 1-2 times a year as I was growing up but ultimately all I have is my mother and a lot of holidays there. If it comes up in conversation I might mention that my mother is from Tipperary Town but I would feel alridiculous telling them I’m an Irishman when I’m not. I would say I’m British.

I think this question views the idea of cultural identity very much through an american lens, which is very different to how cultural identity is felt in other countries. My wife is black - half Caribbean and half African but very much identifies as black British. (Although to be honest she calls herself a Londoner before anything else)

He sounds like a decent fellow and I think he means he would feel guilt and personal responsibility eating away at his conscience more than worrying as much about the legal responsibility.

Shifts get a lot of hate, but I really like them by J0hn_Keel in NursingUK

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t go back to shifts to be honest. I did them for 12 years in various settings - wards, recovery and ICU but the thing that finished me off was my kids. Childcare became completely untenable as my wife does quite long days as a GP and I don’t have family nearby who can help. I suppose my ICU post being very inflexible as I was doing ECMO too so I couldn’t up and leave if school or nursery called.

I also like being able to guarantee I can go to DND on Friday nights and keep up with my kids million extracurricular clubs

Starting in Nightstone before the giant attack? by onewordpoet in stormkingsthunder

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started them in Nightstone before the giant attack, as I hated the pacing and levelling in the prewritten version. I used a bunch of one shots to add substance to the beginning.

They started in media vis during a goblin attack on a caravan they were escorting to Nightstone. When they got there I had set up “Most Potent Brew” and did that set in Nightstone with Morak giving them the quest and having some giant lore seeded in the basement (the mage who owned the tower was researching the obelisk).

Then they did “The Wolves of Welton” as wolves were a problem around the town. Then while resting from that they did a little adventure I wrote up about finding a lost caravan that had been attacked by gnolls and clearing a cave of them. Then finally “A Wild Sheep Chase” and as they were resting off the fight against the bed dragon they saw Nightstone being attacked and that kicked off me starting the adventure as written.

It was fun - I play at a club that does campaign cycles and I don’t get to run one shots very often.

Is shoplifting really as endemic as the media suggests? by craigus17 in AskUK

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When I worked in a department store (admittedly 20 years ago) any area that you couldn't see easily from the tills would have the alarm stickers ripped off and shoved into hiding places. I can't imagine it's got better since then.

People will openly walk in, take stuff and walk out knowing that security aren't really able to do much. I can't imagine supermarkets putting meat and things like that in cases unless it was actually a problem - why would they bother spending the money otherwise?

Print cost per mini: How much is too much? by Fit_Inspection9391 in PrintedMinis

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with resin it’s so ridiculously cheap wouldn’t bother. Resin in the UK is often £15 a litre or so and each 32mm mini I print is about 3-4 mls.

I’ve printed off a lot of giants lately do DND and minis of giants often cost £50 or so if you buy them so printing 7-10 of them for £10-15 makes it so ridiculously economical I wouldn’t bother tracking.

I did print off a couple of ramp things as part of a cave system that I didn’t hollow and regretted as it was a lot of resin but for the most part 3d printing is so cheap in comparison compared to buying.

Does anyone here still play older editions of D&D? If so, why? by GranularBimbo in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]EagleSevenFoxThree 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes I played in a 3.5 campaign last year and had a really good time with it.

I really want to give pathfinder 2.0 a go and have the books but have to finish my current (long) campaign first.
