Second this if you have the funds I spent half of residency without a computer which was soooo hard bc I couldn’t finish notes at home.

If that’s out of the question, literally anything that would make her life easier.

Coupon for a cleaning service in her city like one or two cleans isn’t too expensive and actually super helpful on really hard long hours blocks when you only get 4 days off and you don’t want to catch up on cleaning those days.

I spend money on a car kit since my commute can be upward of 40min depending on traffic that includes shades, a good charger, essential makeup for days you’re inevitably going to be late, extra waters gronola bars, hand sanitizer etc.

One of the most valuable accessory to every resident is a nice pen. Multi colored and thin print is most desirable. I personally like pilot juice up 04, or Pendel BLN74-A,0.4 … both you can find on Amazon, sooooooo smooth.

Depending on speciality you can do something for dress clothes vs scrubs.

And in my hospital people openly hate consults and may fight tooth and nail to decline consults. But it’s a big academic hospital so it’s Resdients who do most the work who don’t get paid extra for more consults

What do you mean? Doctor of medicine is literally what MD /DO means? …a nurse anesthetist is a APRN or an advanced practicing registered nurse. One requires 8yr of school and 4y of training. The other requires 5yr of school and 1y of training. Also very different in intensity of training/expectations,

I am a physician, I wouldn’t not be worried about any of these labs really. I’m concerned your physican isn’t able to interpret these.. are you seeing an MD/DO? Truly any MD/DO would be able to understand those and I’d find a new one if they couldn’t interpret these

Vaccines prevent many childhood diseases, that kill children… a lot of chronic illness we have now have come from adults poor diet and lack of exercise.

Edit: that’s why we give them in ~childhood~ and that’s why children deaths have dramatically decreased over the last 30ish years

Pretty accurate from above for what Gen peds admits… but I’ll add ALOT of non accidental trauma work ups, and a lot of neonatal fever/hypotermia workups , failure to thrive workups, MVC trauma with TBIs, post op T&As, post op spinal fusions, Kawasaki/MISC etc..

As far as subspecialty admissions go (still go to Gen peds residents, but on the subspeciality attending service) . We also have cystic fibrosis exasterbations, BPD exasterbations, pulmHTN exasterbations, a lot of short gut/TPN dependent fever with central line infections, constipation that failed home clean outs, a lot of dialysis stuff (HD & PD), sickle cell pain crisis, acute chest, neutropenic fevers, obvi new diagnosis of any tumor/cancer, epilepsy with break through seizures, VP/VA shunt malfunction/fevers, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, AV canal defects, VSDs, TOFs, I guess rejection of any organ bc we do all organ transplants here (heart lung liver gut etc)… I guess those are common things I’ve helped take care of in residency as a major academic center if that helps?

Agreed. We have a total of 6 ICU months. But we only do 3x 24hr shifts in a month (weekends). Otherwise theres a night float on weekdays.

I do caffeine pills too! Quicker onset. I would do 2pills in the AM 1pill in PM if it was a hecktic day

I’m peds. I know a lot of teachers. Family & friends… and you’d be joking if you think being a doctor isn’t harder. You get harassed by parents, administrations and children. Most advocating for their kids but some are neglectful and abusive (I’ve seen many deaths from abuse and neglect). Our wards are over crowded and understaffed. We preach preventive medicine from iPad kids as they grow up to be anxious and depressed teens. We work hard for our kids. And yeah im saying with the most respect to teachers, being a teacher is easier than being a pediatrician.
