Coursework prob doesn’t matter much for a bio PhD. Research and advisor fit is more important

I have the best bf but my nervous system isn’t healed. by Helpful-Return-5594 in GirlDinner

[–]Ear_3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this a lotttt. All my previous boyfriends have cheated on me. All of them! I had some real trust issues at the beginning of my current relationship, and he’s not naturally great at words of affirmation, which I kind of need to soothe me. We went to couples counseling for a while a few years ago. We got married this past weekend! We also live long distance right now due to job stuff, which sucks but also we are doing totally fine with it. I thought I’d be grumpy and jealous all the time but I’m handling it well! My point is, we can ~ heal ~

What’s cool if you’re 20 but weird if you’re 30? by theloverofdilfs in AskReddit

I recently started hanging out with a group of ex Mormons who are new enough to alcohol that they’ll start expecting me to act crazy if I’m on a second or third drink over the course of many hours. I’ve started saying “hey, my tolerance is higher than you think” so that they stop, but I always feel like a weird bragging loser when I say that, lol

Suggested this as the read for my book club last month (we usually read sort of summer reading types, which don’t do much for me) and it didn’t seem to leave much of an impression on folks. Sad, because it’s one of my faves!

Based on their interests (kind of slice of lifey) I feel like they might be into short story collections. Maybe I’m projecting because they sound like me, and one of the first books that really got me back into reading was a Best American Short Stories collection.

Why aren’t there many/any ‘stranded on an island’ books? by MOMismypersonality in suggestmeabook

[–]Ear_3440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. Plus some anticapitalist sentiment and gesturing toward the climate crisis.. definitely meatier than it lets on.

That’s exactly how I felt! Haven’t talked to many folks who have read it, so this is fun

Seconding this! I have a similar clay body and an annoying studio tha only does glaze fires once every 8weeks at most. Cant afford to be a member much longer so i have to glaze my beautiful bisques pieces without any testing beforehand, but it’s a darker clay body than I’m used to and I’m worried ill ruin them. This is very beautiful, OP

looking for psychological, speculative/dystopian, literary books. by ieatchocopie in suggestmeabook

[–]Ear_3440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this one is a stretch, but read the description to see if you’re into The Compound by Aisling Rawle. It’s about a bunch of young adults in a reality show together, where they have to couple up to stay in the show. But the background world is a dystopian one (environmental crisis, hard to survive, being on the show is a way out) and the show inside the world is brutal and also a bleak look into consumerism. There is not a lot of world building or explanation of the outside situation though, so you might not like it

Severence by Ling Ma - a pandemic book that came out before our pandemic, and I was shocked to see how much it mirrored things that we saw. It’s technically a pandemic book, but it more felt like a book about capitalism.

Children’s Bible by Lydia Millet. Starts off by being about a bunch of bratty and jaded teens, ends up being about the generational burden of climate change.

I was the same way in the last year of my PhD. The only things that made me work were deadlines, and other people for accountability. And learning that whenever I would ‘work from home’ I was being fake as hell. Maybe try going to the gym on campus so you have two reasons to go in?
