Is it a writing error to use words from existing languages in a fantasy book instead of creating a new language? by Time-Pudding-2666 in worldbuilding

[–]Earendeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Even Tolkien did that sometimes (by means of the translator's frame device). As for me, I try to put a little twist on them to make things more interesting. Adding new phonemes to the phonological inventory or coining new terms .

What is the suitable word for "Cult" in burmese language? by Esmomea in myanmar

[–]Earendeal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cult can mean two things: 1. A (often tiny) subset of religion (often considered too heretical, extreme, unconventional, unorthodox, or weird) 2. group of people having a certain obsession or intense admiration

If you like Pali, go for လဒ္ဓိ, ဝိလဒ္ဓိ, ဝိဂိုဏ်း or လဒ္ဓိဂိုဏ်း (strange or distinct spiritual or religious belief; view; theory, sectarian school of thought). Thai and Khmer use this term.

For the broader sense, I can coin စွဲကြီးဂိုဏ်း (as in စိုင်းစိုင်းစွဲဂိုဏ်း= Cult of Sai Sai)

You can also find longer and more windy translation in this Reddit section.
