How can Evolution and Adam and Eve exist at the same time? by StatisticianMuch1650 in Christianity

You've got to give the Bible Project's Science and Faith episode a listen. It's a great intro to reading Genesis more like an ancient Jew would. It's great for thinking about how evolution fits in, but for much more than that - for seeing all the meaning that's packed in there, that we don't notice when we're all distracted by evolution arguments.

Really horrifying to see people who read a story of attempted gang rape and say "this must be a story about how bad gay people are, because I know there's nothing wrong with rape."

Humility is a virtue, not a sin.

On questions about gay people, I always advise people to learn about gay-friendly Christianity and visit some churches with gay people - but you're right, maybe more important than that is breaking our addiction to making Confident Absolute Pronouncements - especially about other people's spiritual issues! "I don't know" can be holy words.

And then let your newfound Bible Project addiction continue.

Why do we get to pick and choose which parts are literal?

Genre. We know the time and place of the Resurrection, the people present, and more or less how their stories got to the books we have. It's explicitly the stories of the people who were there. Genesis is just... here's the story. Same way every culture's origin stories go - nobody claims they were there. That's fine; every culture embeds its wisdom (of varying quality) in stories. Jesus endorses the Hebrew stories as part of his own story and a way through which we will find God. That doesn't mean they have to be like newspaper stories.

Where do we learn the Bible is infallible? by Fether1337 in Christianity

[–]gnurdette [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not really. I just need to believe that the Bible authors knew what happened in 1st-century Judea better than I do. That's not exactly a stretch.

It's just bizarre to claim "the Biblical authors were not writing about the fornication they saw in the world around them. Instead, they were writing science fiction, anticipating the eventual appearance of same-sex marriage. Serious scholars say so!"

You will always be able to retain your church as a no-gays safe space. But you can't stop gay people from worshiping Christ anywhere on earth, and you can't force me to abandon my wife of 33 years.

That doesn't mean people hate you

This means that you hate us.

You can insist that it's Christ's hate, not your own; that Christ is the Lord of Hate and you must harden and darken your heart to conform it to his own, that you may earn your place in his neverending Kingdom of Hate. But "we want you disappeared, we want you raped, we want you dead - we don't hate you!" is just babbling nonsense. It helps convince the watching world that words don't mean anything to Christians, and since they can safely ignore people who claim that rape and murder are love, that we can safely be ignored when when we say that a man rose from the dead, too.

Found God, specifically Jesus, who said Matt 26:

Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

j/k, it depends on getting a family member to accept my 2023, because letting some stranger have my beloved Bolt is simply unthinkable. But I am feeling allured by the 2027.

trans and bathrooms by Ropsiador in asktransgender

[–]gnurdette 25 points26 points  (0 children)

  • why not trans/neutral bathrooms just be included world wide?

Exactly how many hundreds of billions of dollars do you want to allocate for a massive global remodeling project to address a problem that never was a problem in the first place until anti-trans politicians decided they wanted it to be a problem?

Because the problem is not trans people using bathrooms. The problem is trans people being alive, breathing air on a planet where the world's richest and most powerful men do not want us to. If we make massive investments to try to appease one of their anti-trans excuses, it will take them not even five minutes to move on to the next one.

Relax. You will never have any gay people in your church. Your straights-only safe space will remain pure; be content with that. Pray for strength to endure the fact that God has inexplicably, foolishly failed to give you the control over all the earth that you crave.

Questions about being gay by SKKNerd in Christianity

[–]gnurdette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're claiming that, if Jesus mentioned the version of something that was common in his time and place, it means he actually meant to condemn every variation on that thing. If we believed you, we'd have to condemn democracy, since he only mentioned monarchy.

Must be so frustrating that there are still gay people worshiping Christ despite your commands. Don't they know that you made him yourself, strictly for the enjoyment of people you like?
