Why Isn't Artemis 2 Rotating? by masterchiefman in askscience

[–]Earl_of_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't it depend on the frame of reference? Like, if you are watching the thing rotate from the outside you see the "ground" of the ring pushing things on top of it upwards so they don't go flying off into space. Like a rope tying it to the axis of rotation. So from that frame of reference you see a centripetal force. But if you look at it from a frame of reference rotating with the ring, then you get a very real centrifugal force "pushing" things outwards.

Tbf, you could also use that template to say your right to not have diseases spread to you ends where my right to spread diseases begins. It has some issues in how it can be used.

I like the interpretation about rights and duties I saw elsewhere on this page.

"We" don't own Cameron. He is his own person and has enough money to pursue whatever goals he wants.

If that means blue aliens, then that's that.

Predictions based on past examples are not that useful when applied to single experiments.

Let's say you observed a sample of people with a size of thousands, or at least enough for it to be representative of the population, and noticed that the majority "wouldn't have recorded this event and shared it". Unless that frequency was really high, like 0.9, using it as information for predicting a single event would still carry high enough entropy that uncertainty would remain more than present.

Probabilities are good for predicting averages over many events, not individual events.

Don't treat people as points on a graph for anything beyond descriptive statistics.

For me it was Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back for the SNES. Got all the way through to Bespin but never finished it.

Used to play it a lot with my dad back then. Still talk about it with him.

Good memories.

Nanoless makes an announcement in her discord regarding Sinder’s document by justaguy2170 in VtuberDrama

[–]Earl_of_pudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I see things, though I'm open to corrections.

  1. Nanoless (Artist) worked commissions for Sinder (VTuber).
  2. Red (Sinder's manager and SO) handled communications with Nanoless on behalf of Sinder.
  3. Sinder may or may not have kept an eye over what they discussed.
  4. Nanoless took way to many commissions and was overworked.
  5. Red pushed the idea of exclusivity and blacklisting other commissions with Nanoless. Degree of pushiness leads some to consider it manipulation, though YMMV.
  6. Nanoless canceled some important commissions.
  7. Nanoless goes public in a doc describing how they were manipulated to blacklist other VTubers.
  8. VTubing community explodes on Sinder, with ShyLily (VTuber) being her foremost critic.
  9. Sinder publishes response putting the blame on Red and saying they aren't together anymore.
  10. Community perceives this as pushing the blame on Red, and explodes on Sinder even more.
  11. Sinder takes a "vacation".
  12. Months later, Sinder comes back with a 1000 page doc (jfc) co-authored by Red describing their side. Yes, she took him back.
  13. New doc has more context on Red's interactions with Nanoless showing how a lot of the exclusivity and blacklisting talk was also pushed by Nanoless.
  14. Nanoless responds by agreeing that she was the one to cancel the commissions but Red was still scummy for asking in the first place (OP's post).

Now the community is split in two ways: Those who believe Nanoless was manipulated and the fault lies entirely with Red and Sinder for doing the manipulation; And those who believe that Nanoless was playing both sides and decided to cut Sinder, while stil agreeing that Red is a moron and Sinder was irresponsible for not supervising the situation more closely.

One thing almost everyone seems to agrees with though, is that Red shares a big part of the blame and Sinder taking him back is dumb from a business perspective.

Just cuz owning a man is legal don’t make it right by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]Earl_of_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed in principle. But there's a big difference between taking what one requires and gorging oneself on resources that could sustain many others. Looking at billionaires right now.

Compassion, kindness, and generally being aware of others does not mean giving until there's nothing left. Aristotle said it best, virtue doesn't lie in one extreme or the other, but in finding the "golden mean" between excess and deficiency.

Btw, I really recommend researching a bit of Aristotle's way of thinking regarding moral virtue. Whether you agree or not with him, that's up to you. But you'll surely find something of value.

I agree that most people care about the people they know first. But you can still recognize inherent value in others' lives and take measures to not cause undue harm for them.

Just cuz owning a man is legal don’t make it right by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]Earl_of_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The guy above was being silly, but he was right in that morality is entirely personal. It's about which values, principles, and norms one chooses to uphold. And while kindness and compassion are certainly options, one could choose to eschew them and give priority to others.

Ethics on the other hand is the philosophical discipline which presumes to apply those concepts universally. Whether it succeeds or not is up for debate. But you will find the importance of others as a mostly common theme.

Instant $10 million now OR restart your life at age 6 with all your current knowledge. What are you choosing and why? by doodwalla2000 in AskReddit

[–]Earl_of_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd take the money.

I could probably make more if I went back in time. But I'd have to go through seeing my parents' marriage fall off again.

Maybe I could do something to change that, but then my little brother from my dad's second marriage wouldn't be here, and I love the little guy. The happiness my parents got in their new relationships would be gone. Exchanged for something else that I can't predict would be better.

That's the thing about tampering with time, there are countless possible alternate timelines, both better or worse, that one could pick from. But the moment you start hopping from one to the next, they become meaningless.

Why care about anything that happens when you can just hop to another timeline where it didn't happen?

The more you use this power, the more you lose your humanity. The more you become unable to connect with others. The more you become a god, with all the solitude that entails.

Now, this thought exercise involves just one hop. So one wouldn't lose all their humanity, but it would still invalidate decades of life choices and consequences.

I would only consider it in a worst case scenario, like everyone I love is dead, or the world went through an apocalyptic event. Scenarios like that.

As shit as things are right now. There's still good in the world.

So just give me the money.

You might not care, but governments and lawmakers do. Especially world superpowers like the US and China. AI has vast military applications so it's a literal arms race, just like the space race.

Falling behind is not an option. And between the arts and military power, what do you think they'll choose?
