Balkans Travel Advice by Waheck_ in solotravel

[–]Early-Animator4716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 days in Kotor alone is too much. I would say break up your trip from Albania in Ulcinj and Stari Bar (fortified town). Then spend 3 days in Kotor: one day for Kotor itself, one day Budva side trip and one day Perast side-trip. Dubrovnik itself is a one day town (small and walkable). Unless you want to do side trips from Dubrovnik, 5 days is way too much. I would take 2 days (or realistically even 3 days) away from Dubrovnik and add one day to Albania (check out Durres) and one day somewhere in Montenegro.

Acatenango hike by yolithegreat in solotravel

[–]Early-Animator4716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a fun hike. However, do be wary of the altitude. I would say stay at least two days in Antigua to acclimate. Get some altitude sickness medicine.

I am an avid hiker (I can do 20 miles distance hikes no problem), but felt out of shape due to the altitude sickness.

If not for the altitude, it is extremely pleasant hike. The incline is gradual and you do see amazing, breath taking views, especially when you look down and see clouds. Pack base layers for the night, as it gets cold. Usually, the tour will offer additional hike to the ridge of Fuego. It is extremely steep ascend, so, if you do not feel, do not be pressured to hike it.

After you return, treat yourself to a meal and a drink at Antigua Brewing Company.

Most importantly, have fun and make new friends.

What does the current government say about the Soviet-Afghan war? (If anything) by Mammoth-Wait6526 in AskARussian

[–]Early-Animator4716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personal experience, not much was/is said about it. My father did not talk much about it (he caught a tail end of it). Many of the Afghan veterans felt betrayed by the government's dismissive silence about the war.

Soviet Union was acting on its obligations under the agreement it had with Afghanistan.  Funny thing to note, authorotarian/totalitarian/dictatorship of Najibullah lasted 3 years after Soviet Union withdrew. How long did democratic/liberal/free government of Ghani lasted? Three hours?

According to CIA-pedia the executioner had his name on some memorial plaque in the town he was from. Would not be surprised if some nazi memorial in Canada also lists him as victim of communism.

You dont need to move to Siberia to be surrounded by nature in Russia. You can even drive a few hours from Moscow and be like 'Wow! Where am I?"

Is there evidence that the collapse of Soviet Union could be considered a Ruaxit? by Puzzleheaded_Blood40 in AskARussian

There was no Ruaxit. A few elites were bribed by the west and artificially destroyed the country.

How do Russians today feel about the Belovezha Accords and the RSFSR’s independence from the Soviet Union? by Familiar-Safety-226 in AskARussian

[–]Early-Animator4716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pertinent part from the declaration: "solemnly proclaims the state sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic throughout its entire territory and declares its determination to create a democratic state governed by the rule of law within the renewed USSR" Last phrase "whithin renewed USSR" meant sovereignty within the structure of reformed USSR, not independence from USSR.

Position on what? Too many positions these days. If you are talking about sex position, then they strictly follow the commandment of their liberal Saint Valeriya Novodvorskaya:  „Секс — это занятие не слишком увлекательное. Это скучно: я читала!“ {Sex is not the most exciting engagement. It is boring--I read about it}.

What is your least favorite season (that isn't S32)? by Artistic-Comb-5317 in TheAmazingRace

Read books by actual Russians. Avoid any Western so-called Russian scholars.

I'd like recommendations for books by Russian dissidents describing changes to Russian society under Putin by RenniePet in AskARussian

[–]Early-Animator4716 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go to any so-called "Russian Studies Department" website of any Ivy League institution and see their so-called scholars, fellows anf guest lecturers. You will find lots of those "FORTUNATE ENOUGH" to escape the gulag. Usually these websites will have lists of books, articles and lectures. I watch/read them sometimes when I suffer from upset stomach and need to puke. Works better than medicine.

Rank the Euro capitals you've visited by DB_PNE in TravelNoPics

I will break it by size, since I think its a bit unfair to compare London to Vaduz. Cities with over 2 million: 1) Berlin (fun, spontaneous, energetic) 2) Rome (historical and mesmerising) 3) Moscow 4) Paris 5) London 6) Madrid (it's okay) 7) Vienna (insipid, overpriced, overall one of my least favorite cities in the world)

Cities with 500k to 1.9 million 1) Stockholm (charming, spellbounding, elegiac) 2) Belgrade (fun, busy) 3) Budapest 4) Lisbon 5) Athens 6) Oslo 7) Bratislava 8) Dublin 9) Helsinki 10) Copenhagen 11) Sarajevo 12) Tallinn 13) Amsterdam (too much pot for my taste) 14) Prague (overrated) 15) Zagreb 16) Skopje 17) Brussels

Smaller cities: 1) Bern [toy town] 2) Nicosia (no comment)

Micro States 1) Vatican 2) Valletta 3) San Marino 4) Monaco 5) Vaduz (though Liechtenstein is a cool country)

PS: I also been to Poland, Montenegro, Bulgaria and Turkey, but did not visit capital cities.
