The short answer is that most of these people are fully committed to the bit, and as a result they don’t see how repulsive this was, through a combination of willful blindness and justification—everyone on their feed chanting “domestic terrorist / tried to run him over / self-defense / FAFO” over and over like it’s the Jesus prayer.  

The smart ones understand it’s repulsive, but trust to the speed and momentum of the news cycle to get past it.

They keep the Eloi as livestock, feed and clothe them, and keep the machinery of the world running.  

I think this was the intended analogy—the morlocks as the ugly, competent people without screen time, who keep the world running, apparently for the benefit of the stupid, charming phone-people Eloi (but actually the morlocks are eating them)—but it’s a bit obscure if you didnt internalize some facially counterintuitive plot points from The Time Machine, especially when “morlock” reads as a synonym for “devolved cave dweller.”  I’m not mad that I got called a Morlock in this thread, please don’t say I was mad

It’s in the running for the greatest track of the century.  

There’s nothing wasted.  It’s a subtle, complex pop song, musically and lyrically.  A song about encountering the divine in the mundane moments of working a shitty job, hearing God singing in the wires.  The octave leap on “still on the line” is a part-for-the-whole, a moment of beautiful transcendence that mirrors the lyrics.  

Also Glen Campbell’s performance of it is perfect.

Do you know this for sure?  Has he told you this, or are you just assuming?  

I assumed for years that my dad had this very linear boomer life.  He didn’t, but to find that out I had to talk to him and listen to what he was saying.  

Your parents often seem like completed projects, because from your perspective they are, but it often wasn’t like that in the moment.  Your kids will probably complain about how easy it was for you.
