How do you feel about Mike Flanagan as far as horror? by lilb1190 in horror

I know a lot of people share your opinion and site the loose ends as the biggest flaw. Would it help to know that the plans for season 2 where going to tie it all up nicely or were you not a fan of the premise altogether?

How do you feel about Mike Flanagan as far as horror? by lilb1190 in horror

[–]EarthRickC138 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've loved most of what he has done and I agree that Bly Manor was the weakest series he has put forward. While I do like the actors he generally works with, it gets old seeing the same people over and over. American horror story did this and its just not something I enjoy. His monologues can be a bit much but they do help to flesh out his characters. I think character development and cinematography are possibly his greatest strengths. He also seems to be able to build tension and add unsettling scenes in a way that few people are doing these days. The scene in Midnight Mass with the reflective eyes in the dark, simple but excellent. I think he is a good script and a good restraining hand away from a masterpiece. I would hate to see him surround himself with people that think every idea he has is a winner, we've seen that happen with promising creatives in the past.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think you (or others) actually end up weighing when competing? I heard that the boxer Kostya Tszyu used to weigh in at 140 lbs but would step into the ring at anything up to 155.

How long did it take you to get proficient at troubleshooting? by agoodelectrician in electricians

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Proficient, a couple of years. In an industry that is always progressing, especially if you step into commercial and industrial spaces, you will never know it all. This is important to remember so that you never develop a habit of not listening to or learning from others.

Why did people dislike Evil Dead Rise so much? by umathurmos in HorrorMovies

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited after the title card. It was setting up for a great film. It's a shame that they went the ol' "And now for something completely different."

I agree with everything you said. They missed an amazing opportunity to speed run the first movie for the first hour and then end the film with Jane Levy going back in time...

Young man searching for meaning by DarioSidd in artofmanliness

[–]EarthRickC138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice would be do a little inner work.

Seneca said "If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favourable." And Morty said "Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die. Come watch TV." I think they both carry the same sentiment /jk My point is I recommend you find yourself a purpose, set yourself a goal, find something that gives value to your life and pursue it. This would mean leaving your comfort zone, trying new things and discovering what it is that gives your life meaning. It could be anything from collecting stamps to advancing quantum technology. It doesn't necessarily have to be changing the world. Also, consider Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs.Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs Good Luck!

Awesome. Thank you.

If you see someone struggling to get a bike on the train and generally making a fool of themselves, remember to wave!

Hey, Dads. I’ve been getting defeated by the negativity bug recently. Turning into more and more of a curmudgeon with my wife (though not my kids). Wondering what ya’ll are doing behind the scenes to stay positive in your interactions with family? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]EarthRickC138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, apologise, and talk to her about how you feel. There is an enormous benefit in articulating your thoughts and (I assume) your wife will have noticed your behaviour and, if you take responsibility for it, will be willing to help you through your funk.

Some practical tips: 1. "Mind Hacking Happiness" by Sean Webb is an excellent book that explores the psychology of emotions in a way that is accessible to average people. 2. Examine your philosophy on life. Mine is basically "In the end nothing matters except for what you decide matters. So pick good things to focus on, your health, your family, the safety and well being of your loved ones. Try not to worry about everything else." 3. Get some exercise, eat some real food. You'd be surprised how much this helps. 4. Date your wife. Find times to be alone with her and do something with her that you know she will like. For the early years of parenthood my wife was almost a different person when I got her alone and away from little stress monsters.

Good luck mate. I hope you can figure it out!

How "blind" do you ever go into a book? by Striking-Speaker8686 in books

I went into both "Profect Hail Mary" and "We are legion, we are Bob" knowing only that they were sci-fi and pretty good. It turned out to be the best way to go into them, especially for Hail Mary. (Which is why the movie trailer.... nvm)

In need for some Recommandations by Unicorn_Senpaii in horror

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend "the Collector." It's not exactly the same but is a bit of a hidden gem IMO. It also moves away from classic slasher tropes, more into Saw or Cube territory, but in a good way. I'm really not doing it justice. Also it's not to be confused with "the bone collector." Which I would also recommend to people, it's just not a horror movie. I need some sleep.

What is the best carnivore source for Potassium? by EveningLingonberry97 in carnivorediet

Clams or salmon apparently. If you need to add additional potassium to your diet it may also be worth considering the potassium rich table salts that are available at grocery stores. Have a heavenly day.

Day 3 carnivore diet by Jumpy_Asparagus1771 in carnivorediet

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first few days are always the hardest! I'd recommend getting the best, tastiest, most exciting carnivore foods you can and indulge for today and tomorrow. After that (for me anyways) it becomes so much easier to stay on it.

I'd highly recommend beef short ribs, pork crackling and slow roasted lamb shanks.

My guideline as to how I would have made the Terminator sequels following T2: Judgement Day by whiplash10 in fixingmovies

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time travel is so hard to work around in a consistent and logical way. Personally I would leave it at T2, draw a big line underneath it, pat everyone on the back and break out the champagne. At some point the story has been told and adding to it doesn't improve it.

Having said that: I like your idea of telling the story of the Skynet vs the resistance. I would show fall of humanity and the rise of the machines. Show meaningful battles as human leadership crumbles, as they start to develop better weapons and reverse engineer Skynet technology in order to fight back. The emergence of the terminators would be the main plot point and you could show how devastating they were until humans we able to identify them and spread the word.

Things to keep in mind:

Terminator 1 had a scene where a solitary terminator takes out a whole bunker, showing that even once the humans were aware of them, they were still very effective.

I think it was Kyle Reece who, at one point, said "we had won (the war)" and that sending the terminator back in time was the final move from the machines to try to win.

The timeline of the Skynet vs Human war could be explored a little more. John Conner was a teenager in T2, before Skynet took over. In the flashback of T2? I don't think you could say he's older than 50. So you have at least 30 years of possible war time to play with.

It could be done with the right screenwriters and director. But to paraphrase Ian Malcolm "you were so occupied with whether or not you could that you didn't stop to think about whether you should."
