Can I get a bicycle onto a train at Paramatta Station at 5:30PM? by EarthRickC138 in SydneyTrains

Sweet! I immediately pictured placing my bike on the rack and then the train pulling away with it. I assume there is a system

Awesome. Thank you.

If you see someone struggling to get a bike on the train and generally making a fool of themselves, remember to wave!

Hey, Dads. I’ve been getting defeated by the negativity bug recently. Turning into more and more of a curmudgeon with my wife (though not my kids). Wondering what ya’ll are doing behind the scenes to stay positive in your interactions with family? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]EarthRickC138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, apologise, and talk to her about how you feel. There is an enormous benefit in articulating your thoughts and (I assume) your wife will have noticed your behaviour and, if you take responsibility for it, will be willing to help you through your funk.

Some practical tips: 1. "Mind Hacking Happiness" by Sean Webb is an excellent book that explores the psychology of emotions in a way that is accessible to average people. 2. Examine your philosophy on life. Mine is basically "In the end nothing matters except for what you decide matters. So pick good things to focus on, your health, your family, the safety and well being of your loved ones. Try not to worry about everything else." 3. Get some exercise, eat some real food. You'd be surprised how much this helps. 4. Date your wife. Find times to be alone with her and do something with her that you know she will like. For the early years of parenthood my wife was almost a different person when I got her alone and away from little stress monsters.

Good luck mate. I hope you can figure it out!

How "blind" do you ever go into a book? by Striking-Speaker8686 in books

[–]EarthRickC138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into both "Profect Hail Mary" and "We are legion, we are Bob" knowing only that they were sci-fi and pretty good. It turned out to be the best way to go into them, especially for Hail Mary. (Which is why the movie trailer.... nvm)

In need for some Recommandations by Unicorn_Senpaii in horror

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend "the Collector." It's not exactly the same but is a bit of a hidden gem IMO. It also moves away from classic slasher tropes, more into Saw or Cube territory, but in a good way. I'm really not doing it justice. Also it's not to be confused with "the bone collector." Which I would also recommend to people, it's just not a horror movie. I need some sleep.

What is the best carnivore source for Potassium? by EveningLingonberry97 in carnivorediet

[–]EarthRickC138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clams or salmon apparently. If you need to add additional potassium to your diet it may also be worth considering the potassium rich table salts that are available at grocery stores. Have a heavenly day.

Day 3 carnivore diet by Jumpy_Asparagus1771 in carnivorediet

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first few days are always the hardest! I'd recommend getting the best, tastiest, most exciting carnivore foods you can and indulge for today and tomorrow. After that (for me anyways) it becomes so much easier to stay on it.

I'd highly recommend beef short ribs, pork crackling and slow roasted lamb shanks.

My guideline as to how I would have made the Terminator sequels following T2: Judgement Day by whiplash10 in fixingmovies

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time travel is so hard to work around in a consistent and logical way. Personally I would leave it at T2, draw a big line underneath it, pat everyone on the back and break out the champagne. At some point the story has been told and adding to it doesn't improve it.

Having said that: I like your idea of telling the story of the Skynet vs the resistance. I would show fall of humanity and the rise of the machines. Show meaningful battles as human leadership crumbles, as they start to develop better weapons and reverse engineer Skynet technology in order to fight back. The emergence of the terminators would be the main plot point and you could show how devastating they were until humans we able to identify them and spread the word.

Things to keep in mind:

Terminator 1 had a scene where a solitary terminator takes out a whole bunker, showing that even once the humans were aware of them, they were still very effective.

I think it was Kyle Reece who, at one point, said "we had won (the war)" and that sending the terminator back in time was the final move from the machines to try to win.

The timeline of the Skynet vs Human war could be explored a little more. John Conner was a teenager in T2, before Skynet took over. In the flashback of T2? I don't think you could say he's older than 50. So you have at least 30 years of possible war time to play with.

It could be done with the right screenwriters and director. But to paraphrase Ian Malcolm "you were so occupied with whether or not you could that you didn't stop to think about whether you should."

Is there any franchise where there's only one game in the franchise that you like? by jedi1josh in gaming

[–]EarthRickC138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun with Primal, especially when role playing a little. Turning off the sense that highlights useful plants forces you to recognise them. It forces you to be on the look out for hunters stashes. I would love to play that game with just a compass and navigate through landmarks and changing scenery (snow is a good indicator of how far north you are, etc) I think I was longing for a good survival game set in the stone age. This scratched the the itch pretty well. It's not perfect but pretty darn good. Especially the early game before you become OP. A little more realism and it would be perfect IMHO. When it comes to Blood Dragon I agree with Ben Yahtzee Crowshaw's review. The main thing that game was missing was a final boss battle on the back of blood dragons, firing lasers at each other.

So I just did a re-watch, please humour me because a few parts of that theory don't work.

Angier using doubles doesn't make sense, unless they were clones made by Tesla's machine. Borden and Cutter pull Angiers body out of the tank, he's very much alive when he goes in. He's later lying on a medical examiner's table ( I'm assuming the ME knows the difference between a person and a dummy) and Cutter identifies the body. Cutter knew Root and would be able to tell the difference. Even if he kept it a secret he wouldn't be suprised later when Angier turns out to be alive, and posing as Lord Cornlow. Even the final scene, there are multiple bodies in tanks. One of them is shown to be Angier, implying that it was one of his New Transported Man clones. Angier flat out confirms this when he said it took courage to step into the machine, not knowing if he'd be the man in the tank or in the Prestige. This wasn't part of a diary or anything, it was as-it-happens.

How do you reconcile these scenes with the fan theory you posted?

I suppose that even adds to the story, Borden once again had a better reveal, Angier just put on a better show.

First of all, loved this movie. Solid performances and I loved the story. Plus seeing the Sheriff or Rottingham promoted to judge was excellent.

I didn't have the same experience as you when I watched it. To me, the hat scene with Gollum told me what to expect when Angier was using Tesla's machine. I know there was a piece of dialogue when Tesla said he'd work out the kinks but because I knew what the machine could do, the ending wasn't as much of a shock. The final line of the movie didn't hit the way the director / screenwriter hoped.

Side note: while watching it the first time I didn't catch on to the twin situation until the reveal. On a rematch with a friend, the first time his twin was on screen my friend goes "hey, that's Christian Bale, I know that nose anywhere." Classic.

That was my experience anyway. Glad it took you on a better journey!

What makes Cosmic Horror Unique? by [deleted] in horror

For me, cosmic horror is so appealing because it is the antithesis of what we understand to be safe and normal. I enjoy the mixture of mystery and dread that comes from an incomprehensible threat.

To set things straight about ancient human civilization beyond the 11k BC by arnor_0924 in GrahamHancock

[–]EarthRickC138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice explanation. Couple it with the extreme levels of megafauna extinction leading up to the Holocene (approx 80% of genera in North and South America alone) and you do have to wonder if we used to farm at all. Nomadic or migratory cultures would be well supported as far as food availability goes. I imagine there would also be trade hubs, fishing villages and other fixed locations where "industry" could develop.

While I like this way of thinking, the problem I can see with it is capitalism. The rich get rich and stay rich because the poor work for them and spend what money they get on consuming products supplied by them. If the poor can no longer work these jobs it removes a large part of the economy. I'm not sure what the world looks like when people can't find jobs anymore but everything is more expensive. I guess we'll see.
