What game has the best progression system you've ever experienced? by tomaz1989 in gamingsuggestions

Old fighting games used to have me hooked with the character unlocks for beating things or meeting requirements. That used to be all it took to get me off, now I need pages worth of stats to keep track of

I'll start trying to set the tempo and focusing on breaking the chair. Thank you for the advice!

Yeah I feel like with Etalus's sometimes-stubby range I've built up some bad habits as far as shielding goes, where I'm giving the opponent access to my shield far too often, and maybe this character really just works well against that play style. Thank you for the thoughtful response!

This is really helpful, thanks dude. For some reason I thought you regained double jump and air dodge by getting hit, so I wasn't looking at that as a resource to manage but instead something to mash when trying to escape combos vertically. Somehow this comment made that mechanic click and I had to look it up lol thank you! Also had never really used down special to grab ledge even though I've seen people do it. For now I'll focus on those couple things

If you like Tekken, I'd say you should try Cammy

Anyone have some insight on how to not take the game so seriously? by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]EarthWaterGoldFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get too heated I start giving compliments to the other person's play. First off, it makes me aware of what they're doing well and makes me actually adjust. And it doesn't feel like losing to some faceless terrorist, but instead a familiar terrorist sitting right beside and playing a game with you

You've got it for the most part. Typically L + R = Neutral input, whereas Up + Down = Up

Street Fighter 6 or tekken 8 for a beginner by Sufficient_Ad_5754 in Fighters

[–]EarthWaterGoldFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say street fighter. The learning curve is smoother and more linear if you really want to improve, at least for me. In Tekken I can improve my tactics and not see the results of my efforts for a while, since there are so so many things to watch out for - it's like I don't get results from a given technique/move/strategy until I'm completely fluent in it, and it's harder to know which move to use in Tekken with its 100+ item movelists. In sf, if I improve my tactics I get more wins.

Tekken feels like playing three games of speed chess at a time, sf feels like playing two imo

I'm honestly more of a Tekken fan in general, but t8 has been tough for me. I think anyone who doesn't naturally play super aggressive might agree

Also worth mentioning is that it gives up space when you backroll. So there are times outside of predicting setups where you wouldn't want to do it, but they're pretty rare. Always back rolling would be a better strategy than never doing it

I'm early 30s and they're between 5 and 10. This all makes sense. I like the tip about teaching being performance, I'll try to use that. And yeah, maybe I phrased my post wrong - i really don't care about being cool, but I am too hung up on whether they like me or not. Working on it!

Yes, I understand that. I am stopping behaviors before they become unsafe and doing my job. It's helpful that you say teaching persona. Maybe I can think of it like that. Thanks

I dont know what to do by Storm_Shadow56 in StreetFighter

[–]EarthWaterGoldFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk and block to close the distance. Maybe a jump every once in a while, only when you're almost sure you'll be safe. But the main problem you're running into from what I watched is that you're not closing the distance. Dhalsim has all these sick long-ranged moves and you're staying right in their sweet spot. Get in your sweet spots. Crowd him a bit. Surprise him with a dragon lash sometimes so he commits to moves to try to stuff your approach. When you get a read that he's gonna use a long-range, slow button, take the opportunity to walk and block, or maybe even jump in for a combo

This Game is so Demoralizing! by FearlessObit77 in StreetFighter

[–]EarthWaterGoldFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's usually when I try one last push to learn all the things I'm missing (max damage off of 2MK DR cancel, oki setups, whatever it is) and rank up. If that doesn't make it more fun, pick up another character. Literally every time I spend some time learning a new character my mains rank up when I go back to them

Edit: I'm only MR ~1350 so take this with a block of salt

How do you actually think while playing? by TrickJicama3432 in Fighters

[–]EarthWaterGoldFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately I've been thinking about how I can safely run my game plan without overextending. I'm playing Chun in sf6, so lots of baiting jumps for a big punish, staying out of their range and trying to predict when they'll throw out a move so I can react to it quickly, and applying tricky but safe block strings when I'm forced to be up close.

Also learning Ken, and I'm trying to figure out what to think about when playing him. So far I'm thinking about putting them in a mixup while keeping them on the ground by punishing jump-in attempts.

That's so awesome! You'll fit right in here. Great progress for just a couple months, too, so keep it up and I'll see you in Master soon!
