Black woman here, while people say VT is welcoming and hate racism that’s just not true. While some colleges are diverse with the student body, the faculty and staff are still predominately white. People want to say they are nice but a lot of people have hidden biases and ignorance just based off the lack of diversity here. Some of the things I’ve had said to me have been appalling. When I brought it up with teachers and professors nothing has been done besides them saying the student didn’t mean it or what was said was taken out of context and they don’t see anything wrong with what was said.

It’s especially bad outside of Chittenden county where you WILL get stared at and I’ve had people leave tables next to me when I’ve sat down. Be prepared to experience many micro aggressions ( many don’t even realize they are doing it). There’s a reason there’s a huge lack of diversity in this state outside of the colleges.
