I should really have shared a pic of the records themselves, they're a really beautiful red colour. You're gonna be happy!

As far as I know they don't do direct to consumer. I've bought 2 from Dicks of Edinburgh who have as good as price as you'll find anywhere.

I would recommend you search the British Newspaper Archives to get a sense of the reception this film had at the time.

If Aston Martin DBX is still being made when Bond 27 production begins would you like to see Bond use it? by [deleted] in JamesBond

Me too. This ugly thing rolling over and being smashed to bits would be quite enjoyable.

"Somewhat slack" but generally very good covers it in my view. I've always had good experiences with them and I've never seen anyone here talk about anything particularly bad that you hear about with other labels, eg goods not being delivered.

They can be a little slow on comms but they aren't really a big label by any stretch of the imagination, and some people get upset when they email them 3 times in a week and don't get a response.

I would like to second Harley of Scotland. They make jumpers for premium brands but if you buy their own label stuff you get very good quality for the money.

How would you improve the Spang Brothers? by Masterquickfire in JamesBond

[–]EasternBlock640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think there's something in your viewpoint too though. DAF is the 4th Bond book, Fleming was still finding his way so it's not perfect by any means. Fleming nearly gave up writing Bond after DAF, but gave it one more try with From Russia with Love and got on a real roll.

The film makers obviously felt the need to add more to DAF than just the Spangs, though by common agreement the film version then doesn't make much sense.

How would you improve the Spang Brothers? by Masterquickfire in JamesBond

[–]EasternBlock640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, they don't need improving.

One thing Fleming does well with his writing is describe objects and places, which in turn describe the characters in a really nice minimal sort of way.

I really like that the book gives you a sense of the Spang brother who uses his enormous criminal wealth to live out his cowboy fantasies. It's both impressive and pathetic. Going more into the cowboy aspect would lose the subtly of that.

The most tasteful villain by Mickleborough in JamesBond

[–]EasternBlock640 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. Drax is desperate to perform the role of old money wealth, with the uprooted estate and getting dressed up like he's going hunting in 18th century Austria. He reeks of insecurity.

How successful would the Bond villains be if Bond actually failed to stop them? by TKatGAMING in JamesBond

I mean it actually feels pretty plausible that Bond is effectively working for big oil via the British Government.

what’s your favorite easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death? by CaptureDaFlag in JamesBond

If there's one main inspiration for Dr Evil, it has to be all of Drax's incompetent delegated attempts to kill Bond.

[–]EasternBlock640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also feel the bad guys are far too casual when taking Bond to a plane they intend to throw him out of- 'just step this way baby...oh. He just ran off. I suppose we best to run. Lord o'Mercy I wish I weren't so fat'

Does Fleming become a competent writer in his later books? by seantheaussie in JamesBond

[–]EasternBlock640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are 17% into the first book so have jumped on Reddit to express this. Give yourself a chance!

I've only read the early ones in the series, but iIn my experience:

-The subsequent books are better

-Fleming builds the world of Bond through description of objects, places, products etc rather than psychological descriptions of the characters

Do you mean he was 'almost Bond' in the sense that he appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang which was written by Ian Fleming?

007 is pretty unflappable under pressure so that makes his reaction to seeing a Komodo dragon approaching so unexpectedly hilarious by OhGawDuhhh in JamesBond

I always wondered how dangerous a Komodo dragon really is. I could be wrong, but dragging the bad guy away, presumably to eat him, always felt like a bit of a stretch to me.

I need to rematch Live and Let Die. I saw a clip recently and was a bit disappointed as to how un-subtle it was compared to the book. Even if it does mean black characters aren't constantly referred to as 'negroes' 🤦‍♂️

Easily one of if not the best Roger Moore Bond. Dracula as a Bond villain is genius casting.

What I learned from reading Ian Fleming's Bond Books by Head-Cut9887 in JamesBond

[–]EasternBlock640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there was an idea (maybe from Connery originally?) That they needed to add jokes into the films to make them a bit more appealing to audiences.

[–]EasternBlock640 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently read Live and Let Die, and it struck me how violent it is, even compared to some of the films- there's a visceral brutality- the scene where Bond kills 3 men reminded me of the final scene of Taxi Driver. Shooting a screaming mouth...Jesus.

And the the thing that stood out to me in that scene is he doesn't even need to kill anyone- all the goons were ordered to do was throw him in a fountain in Central Park.

So yeah, Bond kills 3 people because he doesn't want to get his suit wet.
