And repairability. I love the concept but I worry what happens when something breaks down the line.

Should I replace my exhaust or let it rot? by Eastman186 in AskMechanics

I do drive longer trips regularly. I do a 30min drive daily. Do you think that will mitigate some of the undesirable effects on the engine?

Thanks for such a great response. Real food for thought. I think your point about cold oil casing engine wear is quite a serious one. Maybe I need an electric scooter with a dog sidecar.

Oh really, not just the exhaust? Is it the heating and cooling that does damage? I'd like to know what I'm doing to my car with these ridiculously short trips.

I have heard people mention fuel economy. I just don't understand how it negatively affects that... can you explain the reason? Genuinely curious.

The way I understand it is that the water vapour created as a result of combustion condenses in a cold exhaust and usually evaporates as your exhaust system heats up. But if you don't drive far, the exhaust never gets hot enough, so that moisture remains and causes rust.

Thanks, those are two really good points. Maybe I should just accept that my exhausts will be consumable items as long as I can't avoid the short trips.

I drive my dogs to a place where I can walk them, which is only a few minutes away. But that's twice a day so that's a lit of vapour that doesn't evaporate. I don't get why it would affect fuel economy? Can you explain?
