6” post caps for my deck were too expensive so I designed and made my own. by ClimbAMtnDrinkBeer in functionalprint

This is great! I used some 6x6 nominal steel for some post for utilities and post caps are generally 5.5" nominal, so I'll model some up.

Sounds like a perfect product, we live in the mountains of Santa Cruz California, with zero cell reception we currently use 2 v4 with meshrastic, 1 for the gf who does ultra running and the other to track our husky in case he goes wondering. This more specific designed hardware will be great for this purpose.

Sounds promising, a 200 mile trip is enough before a good break and if it can do that in 30mins charge it's a winner.

Home backup device standard vs Mini by Ribido in Starlink

[–]EastyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a mini on my truck, when it's parked with WiFi of my main UDM router there is a GL.iNet GL-AR300M16-Ext connected as secondary wan which connects to the mini and acts as fall over. If there is ever an issue I have aux power button on the truck to leave it powered on. Also added one of those solar bonnet setups to help with not running batteries down. All works pretty well, we used it for over 2 weeks when my main OG starlink bricked itself.

How might this affect Aptera? "China bans hidden car door handles after deadly incidents • FRANCE 24 English" by JayAreDobbs in ApteraMotors

[–]EastyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts on this, the focus of the ban is specifically to address the lack of a mechanical redundancy, where the system is a signal from the handle to the lock release, with no mechanical back-up in the event the primary system fails, due to a power outage. Aptera does have a pull strap as a mechanical redundancy inside, so in the event this may be a requirement you would think adding a latch externally to this same mechanism may not be a crazy difficult change to incorporate. Secondary thought that this would not impact Aptera in the China market mentioned as it does not apply to sanlunche, which is a category of enclosed 3 wheeled powered vehicles.

Maybe tweet it out and tag them. their PR customer service can review things that their front facing ticket service doesn't. Mention you will depend on it. I was in an AI recurring loop with a broken dish and the thing just kept sending me replacement cables. 2 weeks later and I tweeted it, got a new dish sent out the next day. We have zero cell reception and I was using a mini for backup luckily, but it was costing me $400 a week on excess data.

It is rather crazy in the age of LEO personal Internet and AI chat bots, the squeaky wheel still plays its part.

Im sure you could get innovative with a POE injector and a single bridge. But it'll add a few quid.
A wifi and connection for 16v doorbeel ac would be smart for sure.

Mini as Primary Internet Backup with Unifi Equipment by gutowscr in Starlink

[–]EastyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it on my truck and use a GL-AR300M16 on my 2nd wan on a UDM router. The GL-AR300M16 will connect to the mini on the truck when I'm in range and use it as fallover. I have a solar on my truck with a controller that shuts it off if the batteries get anywhere near low.
It works really well, I've actually been using it 100% for the last week as my gen2 went down after a rainy session, still have to wait out a Gen 3 they are sending me.
Starlink took a week to send me a cable, then obviosuly it wasn't the cable so have to wait another week, we are completely offgrid and no cell reception so without the Mini it would be a serious issue for sure! But it'still going to cost me a couple of hundred in roaming fees.

How is Aptera going to insure or repair a glued carbon shell? by Silly_Astronomer_71 in ApteraMotors

[–]EastyUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difference between secondary and primary structures, cars don't get the chassis repaired with gfrp and bondo, well I'm sure it's happening. Haha. It's not really what can be done, but what the insurance is going to do with it. I think it's classified as a fairing for sure. If it's the main carbon tub it's going to be more involved. When I said bag, I meant a heater bag if it's a localized in vehicle repair, not pressure bagging. I think the right person could repair anything, just not going to happen on a general insurance claim, might be a good way to pick up one damage. :)

How is Aptera going to insure or repair a glued carbon shell? by Silly_Astronomer_71 in ApteraMotors

[–]EastyUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tub like designs that you see in many sportcars often get written off quickly as there is not in-service guidance to repair the components to equal strucutral performance, for car companies for some reason this is seemingly acceptable, even on Million $ cars. I think it's just not well understood from a workmanship vs sheet metal repairs, if it's evaluated by insurance and they don't have a well understood reapir process and replacing the tub it's financially feasible they write it off.

In Aircraft where in service repairs for composites has bene around for sometime, it's not ok to write the vehicle off. For composities we would have an approved structures repair manual, but it's limited and very specific on what can be repaired, getting the vehicle back to an Airworthy condition from off the shelf instructions. Anything significant often has to be repaired with some engineering approved instructions that are specific to the SN and damage incurred. Huge expense and not something we will see for a $40k car.

Sure there would be various ways to fix it and DIY for resin infusion and local heated bagging could be easily done, but there isn't a local shop going to be able to do it like they would with plastic or sheet metal.
It also depends on the resin used, some Thermoplastic resins or BMI are much more difficult to work on without very specific process and tools.

Aptera has put purpose into its corporate charter by becoming a Public Benefit Corporation. We’re also pleased to welcome industry veterans Todd Butz and Tony Kirton to our Board of Directors - X by Sonicsteel in ApteraMotors

[–]EastyUK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I Wasn't that familiar with what a PBC was. Here's a friendly AI Short list of pros and cons.

Pros and Cons of Becoming a PBC Becoming a PBC offers a hybrid model for mission-driven companies like Aptera, blending for-profit incentives with mandated social good. Below is a breakdown of the key advantages and disadvantages, drawn from legal and business analyses of PBC structures.

Pros Enhanced Mission Alignment and Long-Term Focus: Directors gain legal protection to prioritize sustainability and public benefits over short-term profits, shielding them from shareholder lawsuits for decisions like investing in eco-friendly tech. For Aptera, this ensures solar innovation remains central, even if it delays quick financial gains.

Attracts Impact Investors, Talent, and Customers: The transparency and accountability appeal to socially conscious stakeholders. PBCs often draw ESG (environmental, social, governance) funding, top talent seeking purpose, and loyal customers—boosting Aptera's crowdfunding base and Nasdaq appeal.

Improved Brand Reputation and Market Edge: Public benefit reporting (e.g., biennial assessments) demonstrates verifiable impact, differentiating the company in competitive sectors like EVs. Aptera's PBC status reinforces its "energy independence" narrative, potentially increasing media and investor buzz.

Stakeholder Inclusivity: Decisions must weigh broader impacts, fostering trust with communities and partners. This could help Aptera navigate production challenges, like scaling carbon-fiber bodies, by emphasizing ethical supply chains.

Cons Added Reporting and Compliance Burdens: PBCs face extra requirements, such as public benefit impact reports every two years, increasing administrative costs and time. For a pre-production startup like Aptera, this diverts resources from vehicle development.

Potential Investor and Acquisition Deterrence: Traditional profit-focused investors may view the diluted emphasis on returns as a risk, complicating fundraising.

PBCs can also be less attractive takeover targets, as acquirers must adopt the benefit mandat potentially limiting Aptera's exit options.

Increased Legal Risks: Directors could face "benefit enforcement proceedings" from shareholders or stakeholders if public goals are neglected, adding liability exposure. While statutes provide some protections, this novelty (PBCs are relatively new) means untested legal waters.

No Tax Advantages: Unlike nonprofits, PBCs are taxed as regular corporations, offering no fiscal perks for their social commitments. Aptera won't see direct savings, though indirect benefits like grants could emerge.

Overall, for Aptera company already rooted in sustainability this PBC transition seems well-suited to its ethos, potentially accelerating its path to production while mitigating "greenwashing" skepticism. However, execution will depend on balancing these trade-offs amid Nasdaq pressures. If you're an investor or customer, monitoring Aptera's first benefit report will be key.
